Correct. And I've never pretended otherwise. Saying no one is going to want this job means you've put yourself in someone's shoes and made their mind up for them. All I'm trying to do is show you the different pairs of shoes.

You guys know McDaniel was fired from Miami, right? Another team that needs a good coach.

Which part is mind blowing stupid? Where I said I heard he got fired and defense was not good? Sounds like it was not far off, they gave up more points than before, old HC got fired (for banging a staffer, I will take your word for it) and new coach didn't retain him and got someone else. I mean why would your mind be blown by this? This take is idiotic even by the very low standards of your posts.

When a new staff comes in they bring their guys. You dont have to take my word for the Michigan coach firing, you can read the news, the reason was widely reported

I heard he was fired, turns out he was let go, not extended by new coach, whatever. The defense did get worse, he was let go by the Giants recently too, and I prefer not to get Wink unless he calls Glenn's defense. Or better yet for Glenn to call his own defense, like many other HCs do.

Why resort to personal attacks though if you disagree? Especially calling an idiot over a legitimate disagreement of opinion, when you are not exactly known to be Einstein around here...

Let me explain why. First, let me clarify, I think Glenn is a good DB coach, below average DC, and a terrible HC. What I basically want to do is get this below average defense here, if possible. Below average is a massive upgrade over what we had last year. Maybe if Glenn uses his Detroit defensive schemes, designs, etc, call plays, we get that. Or if we get lucky that he replicates , that last year Detroit defense he had as opposed to others, it was not bad. So, that's my line of thinking. And I think that is the best we can do defensively.

He tried someone else already. And Wilks' defense for the 49ers was pretty good, to be fair. He clashed with Shanahan and was fired, but if you look at the results, that defense helped Shanahan get to SB. And this was not THAT long ago. Yet here with Glenn it just didn't work. We can guess why, too different etc, but I just don't know if any different system would work with Glenn. Wilks's defense was #3 with Shanahan. #31 with Glenn. I just think the ceiling for the defense with this coach would be if Glenn runs his own defense and calls plays to maximize it. Any different system, even if closer to Glenn's than Wilks' was, I think is a major risk after what we just saw.

I "think" he is trying to imply, if Glenn calls his own plays then there's definitely no one to blame but himself. For my opinion, I view Glenn calling his own plays as a repercussion of him throwing Wilks under the bus the way he did. The defense was so epically bad that, if Glenn wants to put his $$ where his mouth is, then call the plays big boy. Put YOUR defense in motion and SHOW us you aren't a walking train wreck! All that talk, bullshit and bluster deserves some "put up or shut up" as far as I'm concerned. He picked Wilks, not the other way around. Glenn somehow seems to think that, because he wasn't calling the plays and it "wasn't his defense" he gets to wash his hands of it as if it doesn't matter. Clearly, in that respect, he kinda forgot he's the HC and it doesn't matter what defense Wilks was running/calling. He IS responsible, full stop.

A final thought on this one... If Glenn thinks people just go, "ahhh, it was Wilks defense and Glenn had nothing to do with it," he is sorely mistaken. There's not an intelligent person who follows this team that believes Glenn just sat back, never walked into the defensive meeting rooms and let Wilks go off and do whatever the hell he wanted with no input from himself. If that's what TRULY happened then he should be fired on the spot for gross incompetence. Even more so than I already believe him to be. By game 4 or 5, after the showings I saw, if I were the HC I would have split my time 50/50 and lived in ALL the meetings and game planning. If I'm the HC, it's my ass in the sling if my people fail. Make no mistake about it, I would have had my hands all over EVERYTHING if my team was on track to set multiple shitty records in a single season. Just sayin'...

    Schefter on Twitter:

Jets have requested to interview Vikings passing game coordinator/DB coach Daronte Jones for their defensive coordinator position.

Jones is also slated to interview with the Cowboys for their DC position as well.

The biggest reasoning for this.. is one, he’s has been in charge of developing/communicating 2 of the more Complex Schemes of the Decade.

    1. ‘Disguising’ Scheme (Mike Zimmer)
    2. ‘Controlled Chaos’ Scheme
    (Brian Flores)

Harrison Smith commended him (seen below) for when they initially were being taught Zimmer’s scheme and how he successfully communicated to them through ZOOM during COVID!

this guy is Flores right hand man shall Flores go gets a HC gig.

cowboys are interviewing Leonhard, I know a lot of people like him too.

To say “the defense got worse” completely ignores the nuance of college football and players coming/going, etc. Of course the defense got worse after Harbaugh left and progressively worse year over year as guys leave. Massive recruiting power leaves when a guy like Harbaugh leaves down.

From 2024 to 2025 they lost two first round defensive tackles in Mason Graham & Kenneth Grant and a second round corner in Will Johnson.

They’ve also had a putrid offense for two years consistently putting the D in bad spots. I mean Wink was behind the gameplan that beat National Champion Ohio State holding them to 10 points (average 37 PPG in all other games).

I heard this on "The Final Drive" podcast, but if you think Wink did a good job in Michigan, I will take your word for it. I still would prefer someone who would implement Glenn's system, and not sure if Wink would do that. And ideally for Glenn to call it himself as I mentioned earlier or Saleh/Ulbrich situation, where it was fully Bob's defense, and Brick was just calling it during games.

I like Morris the head coach just fired by the Falcons. He won a ring with the Bucs as a defensive coach.

There is no salary cap on coaches/coordinators. You pay someone enough...

Why are you so adamant that Glenn calls the plays? Demeco Ryans doesn’t call the plays anymore on defense. Neither does Vrabel. McDermott only took it over in 2023 but didn’t call the plays prior. Dan Quinn only took it over towards the end of the year. Bowles and Macdonald do.

Defense is a lot about checks anyways. It’s a weird request to want him to be so involved like that.

I already explained, I want it to be Glenn's defense this time. Another defense failed miserably, but Glenn knows his. Demeco called the plays to establish his defense too initially. Even Campbell called the plays even before Ben Johnson took over. But I am also OK if someone else calls it like Bob/Brick, but if it is Glenn's defense, he probably gives it the best chance if he calls it himself. If it actually works he could transition to someone else later.

I know. You just said a bunch of times that you want him to do it so it’s his defense. But I don’t see what the difference is or why this opinion is so strong. For better or worse he’s trying to manage the game, not coach the defense. He’s letting his coordinators coach their side of the ball.

Campbell only called the plays on offense when he stripped the role away from Anthony Lynn. Not sure why that’s relevant for the defensive side.

And how did it work out? I think that's a pretty risky move.

And yes, Campbell learned from his mistakes, he stripped Lynn, he called for some time to get this going then handed off to Ben. Even now he is saying he might call it next year.

You want Wink to come in and call his defense?

My two cents. For what is worth, when the talk is about establishing an AG defense, we need to be reminded that his defenses on the later years to the best of my recollection, excelled in run defense, red zone and third down stops. Take aways and points allowed were not very good at all.
Having said that, he needs first and foremost establish himself as a HC, nothing more or less.

He needs to hire a guy whose philosophy is acceptable to him and let him run with it. He certainly can project his vision to the new DC, but let the DC run it, particularly if it is a senior DC like Winks. Otherwise why bother, the guy won’t his best if he need to run somebodies elses system.
Not to mention he has plenty to learn as a head coach to worry about the details of the defense.

Why do you say "why bother?" Ulbrich ran Bob's system pretty well. And there are a lot of HCs who call their own plays on offense and defense. And even some of these who don't, like Ryans, ran it initially and then handed off to their apprentice. The way I see it, Glenn tried it the other way. Wilks for all his faults had good D in SF. It did not work, we are 31st ranked defense now. The other way failed spectacularly.

Even his own mentor we are now comparing him too in best case scenario, Campbell, took over play calling when Lynn failed and only later handed it off to Ben J. At least his own defense is something he knows intimately. I am not sure it will work, but it did work in his last year there, and it is the best he can do. He has to establish the baseline he knows rather than go with the unknown again. He can hand off the play calling later like Campbell did once the ball is rolling and it works. But there is no room for error right now.
