I'm gonna make a very controversial statement here. 1 win is worse than 2 wins and 2 wins is worse than 3. So, your poll is kinda easy to answer
Well, let me turn your world upside down. I went with the Adam Gase year because he was the only one of the three where I was CERTAIN that he was so intept, that there was no way the Jets could possibly do any better than that. As bad as Kotite was, he had some real talent on his team that might have won more games despite the coach. As far as Glenn goes, he was an unknown quantity, so I had no idea what the bottom was for him.
What is Aaron Glenn’s value? Gase knows the depths of offensive play design. Terrible coach, but a guy that has value behind the scenes for his knowledge. Where does Glenn add value as a coach? What is the one thing you can say “yeah we had an awful year, but we know Glenn is good at _______” to help turn this around. I don’t see one redeeming quality that I can use as any kind of confidence in him. He wasn’t a very good DC in DET, he’s not a detail oriented coach, he’s not a good motivator, just about every player has regressed under his tenure, he’s terrible with the press, he has no message, he’s not a good X’s and O’s coach, and he doesn’t attract any good coaches to come work with him. Players that were traded have not spoken very well of him, and we’re hearing rumbles from some of the guys still here (Jermaine Johnson for example). The only response anyone can make is that he deserves more time. I don’t think he deserves shit.
Again I’m not advocating at all for Gase, it’s just the obvious that Glenn is so awful that you could make a case for Gase’s value over Glenn. For a seasoned veteran, a guy like Gase has value in the QB room. I think Gase’s personality flaws make him a poor fit as a leader in any fashion. I just don’t think Glenn has any value at all, personality, leadership of men, or the intellect of play designs.
I was too young to remember but some old timers here would opt for the 1975 or the 1976 seasons as the worst ever. Those teams were inept with bad coaching (4 coaches in total) along with the realization that the Namath era was over ….
Darnold - after recovering from mono - seemed to get better and more adjusted to Gase’s play calling as 2019 rolled on. Then covid hit and the 2020 training camp/preseason was basically cancelled. I think that had a lot to do with 2020. There was a lack of talent too of course….but 2020 was a strange year in more ways than one.
I lived through all three, and I can confidently say there has been no worse few years than the Gase years. We had the QB that was finally going to take us out of the doldrums and we hired the worst possible guy to handle him. The day we hired them is one of those "where were you when..." days for me. All desire to support the team left my body. That was the first time in my life I chose to make plans during Jet games. Good practice for the last month.
This one was the worst. Worst strength of scheduled-adjusted point differential of the three. This is also the only one of the three where it's been clear we're inexplicably not firing our coach, so there's an aspect of future hopelessness on top of it.
Aaron Glenn is a worthless POS. A complete embarrassment , in a franchise that has had its fair share. Im not sure why this is a surprise to anyone; his defense in Detroit sucked. The guy was a DB and just presided over the WORST season an NFL DB unit has ever had. The fact he hasnt been fired yet is mind boggling. It’s pretty sad that if Woody doesnt fire this clown it puts fans in the awkward position of having to root for bodily harm to happen to another human being so the team can move forward as anyone with a brain knows it should.
Honestly, they should have been 0-17. They were lucky to win all 3… maybe then woody would have his head out of ass by now already.
The 2020 Gase team was bad but we've set some comical records for ineptitude this year. First season ever with no interceptions. Fewest total takeaways in a season in decades. First team to ever finish 32nd in both point differential and yardage differential.
It’s a tough poll for sure as all three seasons sucked balls. I get that record-wise, 3 wins is better than 2 and 2 is better than 1, so from a strict record point of view, the Kotite season would be the worst. However, from a “state of the team” view, while all were terrible, and I was here watching all of them, I think this past season is just as bad as any of the others. I hated the Gase hire from the jump as it was crystal clear that he was not a good coach as he had just fucked up Miami and alienated so many players there…the fact that Peyton put a call in was his second FU to the Jets after not coming out when Parcells was here. But this hire with AG was just as bad for so many of the reasons we’ve beaten to death already above in this thread as well as others. I hated the strategic aspect of this hire (i.e., yet another rookie DC after we’ve failed with so many already), but just as bad, I hated the tactical part in the specific hiring of Glenn, who didn’t run great defenses as a DC…typical Woody…he thought he could sell Glenn, the great Jet player and part of the turnaround with Detroit, but didn’t look at why exactly Detroit turned it around…if he had, he would have seen that Detroit was winning with offense not defense, and AG didn’t field very good defenses there. I fell a lot of hopelessness and frustration because it’s hard to understand how Woody can be SO fucking stupid and not see stuff that is fucking so obvious if you just look. AG took a team that agreed, wasn’t very talented, but he made them WORSE! Not one player improved under his so-called coaching. He took former All Pro’s and made them expendable, he took decent players and made them unplayable, and he took a terrible QB and somehow managed to make him even WORSE…like how do you have a QB throw for less than 60 yards in FOUR games in today’s NFL??? His stupid bravado and dumbass coach speak about “our brand of football” without ever even trying to explain what exactly that is…he has NOTHING to point to…it’s impossible to find even ONE thing to point to and say, ok, he crushed THAT…THAT is what we will become. No, there’s nothing. He has no answers. But the hopelessness comes from knowing that Woody is such a clueless fucking idiot that we the fans have to suffer through yet ANOTHER season of this shit and hope Woody somehow decides to fucking fire this terrible coach.
This is what stings, knowing that this poll should include next year as well and we are only one day removed from the 2025 season.
