Dreadful game for Ryan Williams again. He got a HUGE bag in the offseason to stay at Alabama and allegedly has a ton of family members living in a mansion with him in Tuscaloosa. Just drawing from other opinions - it’s effected him a lot. He’s also been playing out of the slot a lot. This same coordinator (Grubbs) put JSN in the slot instead of outside last year for the Seahawks so it might not have anything to do with him or the bag.
Few odds and ends about the OS/IU game from my amateur perspective. . Damned the Hoosiers LB are feisty and scrappy and fast . They can cover a lot of ground fast. Speaking of scrappy, Sayin seems to be a slippery, tough guy with a nice arm on the run. Seems to be able to scan the entire field quickly. Styles of OU has impressed me, pretty good as a cover LB. Mendoza appears to be running for his life a lot, but when protected, Mendoza and Sarratt and Becket seem to have great chemistry. Mendoza looks pretty accurate with the first read if open and seems to zip the longer pass in tight places nicely. He also seems quite patient in the pocket and work his progression given time and finds his open receiver. Not sure I would want him running much at all. Quite frankly I have no idea how his capability would translate at the NFL level, but he did wow me tonight a lot with his long passes to Becket when the game was on the line.
Yeah I won’t say I know enough about Mendoza to have a real opinion on how he would translate to the NFL, but damn I did love his play this game…dude came up huge in big moments including a couple deep completions on third and short. That’s the mental makeup I like in a QB….
I agree, although speaking of mental makeup, in his interview after the game, he looked and sounded like some over the top emotional evangelist, in tears, not poised or in control, somewhat immature seemed to me. I have a feeling he is not the type to take the pressure he will face in NY. I know is silly and nitpicking but I’m not totally sold on his mental makeup at the NFL prospect of level.
I think Mendoza locked up the #1 overall QB pick position with that performance last night. Not a lot of points on the board, but looking at his play, he reminded me of a young but more accurate Josh Allen. Definitely has wheels too. I just wish I could have seen more of him under center. Nice deep ball under pressure. Does the kid have the mental makeup to play here? Not sure. Would I trade up to get him? Not yet as we still need more talent on the roster first. I would, however, trade up for Tate depending on the cost.
Cman, you might be right. I kind of see it as a two horse race between him and Moore if he declares. I lean towards Moore simply because he looks so poised under pressure. I doubt either might be available at 7 or worth really trading up for the Jets. But if one slips go for it.
The thing that makes me nervous about Moore is - can he stand in the pocket and deliver throws when he’s about to get hit? Is he willing to move up in the pocket? He’s only been sacked 14 times. Mendoza only 18 teams but Mendoza runs a bit and seems to be quite alright getting hit or playing in a messy pocket. Moore plays behind a very good pass protecting line.
Good points, although our OL is good and will get better. I’m advocating as one of my picks on the second round a solid guard or center. We should never forget the mess of an OL we endured for so many years under prior regimes. The more I watch the top teams in the NFL the more I see the value of a great OL. No matter who is behind center.
I think we can stop with the whole we might be OK at receiver with AD and Metchie stuff now. They both earned roster spots for next year but we need another legit NFL receiver in the draft. And we’re in perfect position to take one.
