Everybody figured that this was finally going to be the game that they came back and won after behing behind after 8 innings, but of course it was not to be. The lead over the Reds is now 1 game, and the D'Backs and Giants are leading right now too. Edit: Arizona wins, SF loses. AZ 2 out, SF 4 out and probably done.
That's it - Mets and Reds are tied and the Reds have the tiebreaker. When you can't even take 2 out of 3 at home from one of the worst teams in baseball, you know that you have no business being in the playoffs. The question is whether Mendoza will pay for the fact that he couldn't get this team out of a 3 1/2 month long tailspin.
More than one thing can be true at the same time. They've both performed at a fireable level this year.
First half of the season: Soto does nothing, the pitching carries the team Second half of the season: Soto lights it up, the pitching actively hinders the team It's really getting down to the nitty gritty now. Reds are coming off a 4 game sweep of the Cubs. They have 3 home games against the Pirates then they have 3 on the road against Brewers Diamondbacks have 3 home games vs Dodgers at home then 3 on the road against the Padres Mets have the Cubs and then Miami (all on the road) Honestly, I think the Mets have the softest schedule, but it really depends which teams rest their players. Diamondbacks easily have the hardest schedule, so I'm not too worried about them, but the Reds are hot right now and are in the drivers seat. We have to hope they come back down to earth
The Cubs rolled over and played dead for the Reds. I fully expect them to be at the very top of their game against the Mets.
Mets back in front, coming back from being down 6-1. Diaz with a six-out (5K) save, so someone else will have to do it tomorrow.
Clearly - if by some miracle the team makes the postseason, he shouldn't be anywhere near a mound in any situation that matters.
Just highlights how poorly of a job Stearns has done. Feels like you can say that about Peterson also. Mets pitching is just a disaster.
100% - he is Senga-level terrible. At this point, they have 1 1/2 starters they might be able to trust (McLean and Holmes for 4 innings or less). People need to remember that Stearns was very deliberate about how he put together this pitching staff, both over the winter and then at the trade deadline. This disaster is completely on him, but I don't see any way that Cohen is going to fire him this winter (which means Mendoza will be back, too, for no good reason). Well, at least Cincinnati lost again. Now have to root for the Dodgers, or the Mets will be back out of the playoffs. Meanwhile, Mets fans and players need to root for Houston to overtake the Tigers for the third wild card - the Tigers' collapse would make the Mets look not as pathetic. They had a 14-game lead on July 8th, and a 9.5 game lead two weeks ago
