Reminder: this was always going to be the case. This roster is awful. How people talked themselves into anything else is on them.
And if it does happen on Monday night as you say, it's tankathon from there on out, I just want to give AG another chance, because it is indeed early and there was a precedent of a team turning this around from 0-3. But 0-4 to me means the season is over in September, the same month it started. Now, if we do end up a one of the worst teams in the NFL, a Kotite like record, I think it's completely warranted and necessary to get rid of AG. This roster is too good for us to do even worse than last year. Woody fired two HCs last year for winning 5 games. Anything below that and it is very clear to me AG is not the guy. We are not there yet though, there is still a lot of games to be played, and I do hope AG can learn on the job at some point and win some games.
We won 5 games last year, maintained key players, and had a FULL off-season to add, including top 10 pick. I am not sure how we can just say we bring in better coaching and win ... LESS. I am not onboard with this ridiculously low laughingstock SOJ Kotite level type of bar.
I don’t know…I could make the argument that we didn’t maintain key players. Or maybe said another way, we downgraded talent in a couple of key areas. Specifically, we lost Davonte Adams and replaced him with a few scrubs that are nowhere near his level. We lost DJ Reed and replaced him with a very much worse player in Stephens. Our safeties are arguably worse. And we’ve been feeling those downgrades A LOT. We have no valid receiver opposite GW. We have a terrible secondary that just lets receivers run open consistently. So yeah, this 0-3 shitshow is a combo of poor personnel and a new rookie coaching staff at two of the three leadership positions in HC and OC, and the DC who is a veteran who’s had success in the past seems lost in the wilderness…I have no idea what the fuck the defense is trying to do. So it’s a combo of all of it.
I really don’t know how anyone can look at this roster and say it’s better than last year let alone a good roster. Downgrade a quarterback, significant downgrade at wide receiver, significant downgrade at cornerback, lateral moves at best across the DL, lateral move at best at safety. Now take in to account what has actually happened… We lost our starting right guard, we lost the edge rusher that we thought we would have back at full strength, the draft picks have given us almost nothing. Now on top of all of that tack on the fact this is a rookie coach with a largely rookie staff. Three games in and we see what this team is. It’s exactly what most people thought it would be. Edit: Add on the fact that the LT we thought was a stud has been terrible.
Whose fault is that we have Stephens at CB2? This was a major signing with significant investment. A starter for the Ravens, who AG thought he could improve. We also drafted a CB top of round 3 and have been told we got a major steal there, since we ignored DL, which was a bigger need in a deep draft class. And extended top CB we had. This is pretty major investment at CB position by the new regime. Plus MC2 is back from injury. There is no excuse for CB room to be this bad, none. As far as the DL, we actually upgraded DT pretty well. Phillips and Briggs are much better than Kinlaw, who sucked for us, or other scrubs we had there last year aside from Q. DE sucks, but it sucked last year too, and JJ is not out of the year (yet) like last time. They could have also signed Clowney, but chose not to do it. They traded up in a 5th for a DE from Florida who hasn't contributed. Still, this is a better unit on paper than last year due to DT improvements and JJ back. Safety - we did draft a kid in the 4th and got Cisco. Cisco should be better than Clark after major injury. We can say similar to last year, that's fine, LB also similar, but the defense in general should not have taken a major step back like this. Under Bob this was top 5 defense after 5 games. When he left, under Ulbrich finished #20. Now we are #30. Even if AG and Tanner are rookies, AG has been a DC for a while. Wilks is not a rookie. There is simply no excuse for the defense to be that bad, and that includes being a "rookie". Special teams improved with better kicker and even punter. We lost some games last year when we could not make basic kicks. Our kicker hasn't missed yet, aside from 1 XP, which was overturned by penalty. As far as the offense, not having WR2 sucks, I agree. But Adams did not join until later in the year, and we won some games before that. Spent top 10 pick and top of the second on offense. QB - again I think Tyrod yesterday would have done better than Rodgers, given the pressure. Fields was great in game 1, and in game 2, was as bad as Rodgers in his last game vs Buffalo. Also, why did we not adjust to the safety blitz for 3 quarters? Coaching needs to be better, and we need to start winning some games. Still, if defense were really good but we struggled on offense, I would understand. But that's not the case. You guys are setting the bar way too low IMO. Unless you think AG sucks and we will be moving on sooner than later.
I think both could be true I do think our talent is worse in a couple of key areas And I also think our coaching has been bad. I still see the same stupid penalties…late hits, illegal formations, holding, etc. And our defense is putrid. Part of it is lack of talent. Part of it is I have no idea what the fuck Wilks is bringing to the table because we are bad bad bad on D. I guess I could try and look at the bright side and say hey if Pitt doesn’t make a 60 yard FG, we win, and at least the only positive from yesterday is that the team kind of hung in there and made a game of it in the fourth quarter, and if we could have gotten one fucking stop, we win. But 1 good quarter yesterday doesn’t erase 3 terrible quarters…not on the scoreboard and not in my assessment of the team. I emphatically did NOT want a rookie DC with a rookie OC with a rookie GM again this year. I have seen this move too many times now and it never ends well. The only thing we can do is hope that AG is different and he finally will get it and turn this shit around, but after 3 games, there is NO sign of that happening. After 3 games, the only real hope we have is that our rookie GM can actually draft the right guy at QB with next year’s top 5 pick. That’s about it. Still in September and I don’t care how many times AG says it’s a long season, this season is already done.
I'm not gonna have yet another position by position discussion since we've been having it for what seems like months and the only thing we agree on is that we disagree. All I'll say is that things people said would be the case months ago are now the case three weeks into the season. So anyone surprised by it just wasn't paying attention. I do wanna highlight that ending bit though because it's totally wrong. You're basically saying "if you expected this team to be bad then you think AG sucks". What the hell kind of logic is that? The O/U for this team was 6.5 wins and the money was heavily bet on the under. Even in August when it was 5.5 most of the money was on the under. Vegas, bettors, analysts all pegged this team as a bad team. Does that mean everyone thinks Glenn sucks? Give me a break. It's one of the worst rosters in the league being coached by a rookie head coach in year 1 of a rebuild and installing a culture. You can absolutely recognize that the team sucks but also not think the coach sucks. He might, sure, but if someone is telling you they have his future pegged after 3 games, ignore them. They aren't to be taken seriously.
You have to understand that the betting factors in probability of the coach being bad also, it's not just the roster. 3 games is early, but if the season is effectively over in Sept at 0-4 and we end up winning 4 games all season, seeing the same mistakes we have seen so far, I don't think this bodes well for Glenn long term either.
The only positive this season is that we were in two of our three games until the bitter end. With slightly more talent, smarter players, better coaching, or blind luck 0-3 becomes 2-1. Having said that the Bills exposed this team for the joke it is. Miami got off to a bad start this year but unlike us they covered the spread.
Coaching being bad because he's a bad coach or because he's a rookie coach? Four wins has been my projection with a ceiling of 7, so no a 4 win season to me doesn't set off alarms. The roster is atrocious, seasoned vet coaches wouldn't get much out of it. If we look completely incompetent and only win 4 games? Yea of course that's an issue. But I'm not going to project what's going to happen 14 weeks from now. Reality is we are two kicks away from being 2-1 and an entirely different convo. The problems would still exist but there's no absurd panic over Glenn.
Yeah, I think the Miami game will tell us a lot. So far I have not been impressed. We finally got a lucky break yesterday, and still when they got the ball back, you knew we were going to lose. But it's not even that, we discussed before how easy it is to get into a FG range now. It's how quickly and easily they got into the range and they didn't need to hit a long FG either. And that's with so many of their best offensive players out. Very disheartening.
I am not a big subscriber in "two kicks away" from 2-1 moral victories. We are off to a terrible start, so far it's SOJ, but agree, let's see it play out some more before passing final judgment.
Yeah…I was thinking 5 wins give or take 1 up or down, but after watching us play three games I think I may have been a bit optimistic. This is a bad team, make no mistake. So how do we judge AG? I think we need to look at how we play…are we competitive? Are we making stupid mistakes? Are the players playing with heart or quitting? So far it’s been a bit of a mixed bag on this…we lost two one score games so I guess that you can say we were competitive…certainly we were vs. Pitt but yesterday we trailed by double digits into the 4th quarter so no, that’s not competitive to me…sure we got a freak play and made it close but watching that game as whole, I was more disgusted than impressed. And of course we were blown out by Buffalo but that’s a SuperBowl contender so not going to get too worked up over that…would have loved to see us at least be competitive there but when your QB1 goes 3-11 for like 40 yards deep into the second half, that’s a shit show. We ARE still making too many stupid mistakes, and I’m assuming there will be quite the roster turnover next offseason to help this. Players still playing so far but hey it’s early…let’s see what kind of effort we are getting when we are like 1-9… I guess in summary, while I like AG ok, I wasn’t happy about the choice when Woody hired him only because I wanted an offensive guy, but I’ve not seen much of anything to make me think AG can be the guy. I see a defensive coach whose defense is one the worst in the league, and I still see too much stupid play. Obviously early and we may get better as we go, but so far, I’m not all that excited about the new coaching staff.
