Seriously…that STILL bothers me and glad he didn’t make the team…can’t fix stupid You would think these players should be taught to NEVER let the ball go…don’t let it go until you hear a whistle… Along those lines, wasn’t there a big time WR (not for us) who caught a TD and kind of in the motion he put the ball down and let it go and they said it wasn’t a catch when it really actually did look like a catch…I think that was a few years ago and kind of started that whole “how do we define a catch” back and forth? I think it was Calvin Johnson against the Bears…that was a clear catch, two feet down, but then when he went to the ground he kind of put the ball down and let it go and they said incomplete, which was so clearly the wrong call Moral of the story…NEVER let the fucking ball go until you are SURE the play is over…pretty simple
yeah I remember that Dez catch against the Packers but I was thinking of the earlier catch by Calvin Johnson against the Bears… Had to go look it up If I knew how to paste it in here I would
no I think it is saying Gipson has until tomorrow at 4pm to be claimed to an active roster before he can sign with someone’s practice squad
It is not stretching the imagination very far to believe Glenn may have had a conversation or two before cutdown time with Gipson regarding his inability to avoid losing the ball more than rarely and the consequences that it can bring about. That would make it not rash at all, particularly when his failure to secure the ball can easily be seen as quite directly responsible for the loss. I approve Glenn's message.
The more I think about it the less I think this was a good move - it was a bad play but did it cost the game any more than the secondary getting burned, or the 15 yd penalty, or Wilson dropping an essential pass at the end of the game? Are all those players getting released? And I know he said it wasn't any one thing but that's exactly how it looks - why keep a guy on your roster and then cut him after 1 game? Also it creates a precedent - what's he going to do when Fields inevitably costs us a game somewhere down the line or Breece coughs up a fumble on the 1yd line or Sauce gives up a PI call that costs us a game? Clearly nothing will happen to those players but the media will be saying "so why Gipson and not those guys if you really are taking a hard line here?" - should've just benched him for the next game and tried to take some positives from a close game.
He wasn't cut for one play, Glenn made it clear. The reality is that Gipson should not have made a roster to begin with! AG made a mistake by keeping him, saw it, and now fixed this mistake. A little too late, but better late than never. This was as obvious a move to make as there is one, no need to overthink it.
Big difference between some guys having a bad game (especially when one of them is elite) and someone being a detriment to the team for all but his very first game in the league. Gipson has been a negative for years and outplayed by an undrafted free agent rookie in camp. His issues with drops were so well documented that he was catching over 100 balls on the jugs machine. Odds are there was a big conversation about accountability on cutdown day and I’m also assuming this comes as no surprise to Gipson.
The one thing this team has LACKED over the last several years is precedent and accountability. Saleh gave everyone a pass because he was their buddy, not their boss. Those days are over. Fields will have a bad game and Glenn understands that. Fields starts looking like Zach Wilson and Glenn will pull him. Those two picks Martinez threw in the last preseason game sealed his fate. Garrett Wilson can drop a pass every now and then and not get cut. Wilson cannot drop 3-4 passes a game like Lazard without consequence like it was under Saleh and Wilson knows this. In fact, it would be prudent to say the entire roster has been put on notice with the Gipson departure. The Saleh days of wine and roses are over. Time to do your job or someone else will.
I too was surprised he cut X given he put him on the 53 over better guys. I expected he would call up a PS player and make X inactive for week 2. This said, I like the message of accountibilty even if its kind of primitive. I'd like to see Quincy benched for the 1Q next week or at least not starting. M-Ball while inferior looks like a possible player to me and he should be ok for a series--its a tough call though.
Man you can't bench a dude an entire quarter for a late hit. There's accountability and then there's cutting your nose off to spite your face.
It's a lot easier to replace a kick returner than a pro bowl WR/CB. This happens in every single field - high performers get a lot more slack.
it was a truly stupid penalty though. The Steelers guy was wayyyyy out of bounds. Quincy Williams needs to stop making bonehead moves
Very dumb penalty. But if Jalen Ramsey got flagged for the late hit on Fields at the end of the first half (which he should have) and we were in field goal range... would Tomlin have benched him for a quarter?
