It wasn't long ago that most Jets fans would've called you an idiot for saying it was dumb of us to trade up for AVT. You can't always predict injuries, sure, but depth is important on the OL and we could've drafted at least one good guard with the two third-round picks we gave up for AVT. The ripple effects of these mistakes are immense. Imagine we had stood pat, taken Darrisaw, and then drafted two guards with the third round picks. Not only would we have more depth at guard but we'd probably also have Brock Bowers on the team right now.
Yeah I think it’s valid to criticize a trade up for a guard…not the most impactful of positions That said, he is a very good player when healthy, and he did not have an injury history in college so it’s not like JD should have known he’d miss a lot of games due to injury But also, part of that is that he was so good that he actually even played LT for us when we needed him to, so the player is a great player when healthy, unfortunately he has had a hard time staying healthy…
We have disagreed on this back in the day, but the time has shown you were correct. Given how JD drafts though, he would definitely waste these 3d round picks, but still your point was accurate and Darrisaw is a beast.
I thought he was injured a lot because he had to play OT with these short arms, but now the same injury happened at G. He is definitely injury prone, that's really the bottom line. I would still sign him for a Becton like one year deal (which he signed with Philly). Basically have another solid player compete with him, not as a penciled in starter. Dickerson was a also injured a lot, but then eventually got pretty healthy and played well.
Agree. Well said. criticism was to move up for him and it’s a valid one. As a player he is a very good guard, not elite but solid and had zero indications in college of any injuries. Non the less, the issue to me in retrospect is forcing a move up for him, a reflection that his staff did a poor job evaluating the depth of the draft in guards and staying pat.
I will also admit that I was wrong on this. A world where he never got hurt and is an All-Pro is out there but unfortunately not here.
The only trouble with that is, we have not done that in recent times, we can barely make the top 2 picks stick, never mind get a good player with the 3rd round pick. AVT is or was a good player, the previous regime got him injured by moving him to tackle in their desperation. That said, how many of these injuries happen because the players are pumped up far bigger than their bodies can actually handle? A huge shame for the lad, but at least he has earned 15m pre-tax, he will be signed by somebody on a 2m deal next year on the chance he will stay fit, so not all is lost for him.
Like Becton who won a Super Bowl starting for Philly last season. Now starting for Jim Harbaugh with the Chargers who beat the Chiefs last night. He'll go somewhere else stay healthy, get coached up and dominate. Conklin is playing for Harbaugh too and played well but he played well for the Jets last season was one of Rodgers favorite most effective targets. After Hackett was (thankfully) demoted last season Conklin's role was significantly reduced they started pushing Ruckert Even when the Jets get it right they get it wrong.
Yeah…there was plenty of criticism on here on Conklin and I just never saw it. He is not Kelce of course but he not hot garbage either…I thought then and still do that he’s a pretty decent TE…maybe a B type starter at TE…maybe slightly above average. Or to put it another way, we should have kept him and let Ruckert go…Ruckert brings nothing to the table…Conklin is a better blocker and receiver….I’d like our TE room a lot more if it was Conklin and Taylor rather than Taylor and Ruckert as TE1/TE2
And talking about Harbaugh…man he set a good game plan last night and his OC called a good game. They put it in Herbert’s hands and he delivered lights out. At the end there when they got the ball one score up and had to kill time and bleed the Chiefs’ time outs, I couldn’t help thinking if that was the Jets, we would have run the ball into the line 3 straight times to kill the Chiefs’ time outs, we would not have made a first down that way, we would have punted the ball back to the Chiefs, and our D would have given up the game winning TD…because that’s the kind of thinking that defensive HCs do…conservative, play not to lose instead of to win, and in games like this when the other team has Mahomes, he’ll get the calls, PI of course, no holding calls on his OL, of course. The only way to beat them is to not give the ball back. And we NEVER do that. I hope AG plays it different. I get that Fields is NO Herbert, but you need some creative play calling when the game is on the line…for us, it would more likely be letting Fields run the ball, but man, I hope we have a different way of thinking with AG than we’ve had for decades on this team.
While I agree with most of the inputs above, we keep making reference to how the Jets will end up doing it all based on previous regimes. We have no clue what the new regime would actually do. Jim H first year had plenty of ups and downs till he got his stamp on it. Further, we keep talking about AVT in the past tense, he will go to another team blah blah blah for 2M and excel. How do we know that. I advocate keeping him and give him the chance to prove it on a one year contract like any other team will do. You can’t bitch about it both ways. Conklin was indeed surprising but it was more based on salary for the near term than anything else. Ruckert is in my opinion on a very short path to prove his worth with JF or be gone.
Yeah, which is why I said we should not be giving up on AVT just yet. He will probably take a one year deal to stay here. It's not like Becton where coaching ruined all relationship with him and Philly ultimately benefitted. AVT is a captain, well regarded by the coaches and I think he will return on a relatively small deal. He does need to stay healthy eventually though. As far as Conkilin vs Ruckert, for sure I agree with @Jets79, I would rather have Conk, hell, I thought Ruckert should not have made the team at all. But I think the coaches thought they could fix Ruckert, who is pretty young. Unfortunately based on the training it does not look like it happened. Now we do have Mason Taylor and Jelani Woods, and also Smart. Let's see how this plays out, I would not be surprised if Taylor and Woods produce similar to Conk or better, plus they are younger. Woods btw has a similar story to Becton and AVT: injuries plagued the start of the career, and we got him now. Hopefully he can stay healthy with us and maybe we got someone good there. The guy had a very good training camp and preseason. And one last thing: Harbaugh has incredible coaching record in both NFL and College. An offensive guy too. I would give up one of my nuts to have him as our coach. It's no surprise he is getting the best out of the players.
We could have tried to get Harbaugh…he was on his way out of Michigan. We didn’t even place a call. We also could have approached Sean Payton…again, we didn’t even call. I hate Woody. If he had half a fucking brain, he would have told JD to go get one of these guys…and yeah I get each one is a strong personality and may have not wanted to report to JD or wanted to bring in their own GM…whatever. Make the fucking call and find out. Two proven coaches. Offensive guys. Either one would have this team improving inside of 2 years. Either one. But Woody sits on his ass, and then when its too late to get either guy, only then does he fire Saleh after 5 games and fuck the season. I’m just so frustrated at how clueless, idiotic, and stupid he is. You have to try really hard to be this much of a fucking loser. So now we have to watch another rookie DC coach, and I know I sound like a broken record and I actually love AG especially as he was a GREAT Jet…I just hate the approach. So now I have to yet again try and be happy and patient on yet another “rebuilding” season…seems like we are ALWAYS saying stuff like “well…it’s going to take more than a year or two to turn this ship around”…story of our lives as Jets fans…
Yeah, keeping JD and Saleh when it was obvious to everyone except for him we didn't suck just because Rodgers got hurt was idiotic beyond belief. We most definitely should have fired Saleh and gone after Harbaugh, but I think there was 0 chance we would have gotten him with the Charges being one of the openings. As a former QB himself, to come to the team which has a true young FQB was just a no brainer for him. But yes, we should have given it a shot, no doubt. As far this year being a rebuilding season, maybe to some extent, but as I said before I would be utterly disappointed if we do not get at least 7 wins. 6 would be absolute minimum, but I would like 7-9. I just think it can be done with this roster, and AG is a good coach, he should be able at the very least to improve from last year and ideally by 2+ games. Every single coach we had since AG was a player under Parcells was able to immediately improve from previous regime's last year. The bar is low, and I expect AG to reach it and then some if he is any good. And if not, probably another defensive coach soon down the line...
You didn't REALLY expect Woody to sudden get out of character and hire a successful prior HC did you? He's never done that and at this stage in his life, he's set in his ways so, you're gonna have to live with Woody trying to catch lightning in a bottle. I'm not saying you have to like it, but it comes with being a Jet Fan until Woody either sells the team or kicks the bucket.
The season starts today. I’m hoping we see improvements and progress as the season progresses and a bright deem ray of hope for the future. It’s time to give AG a chance, and much like Parcell, may he turn this team into a winner soon. Talking about Woody is a futile waste of time that serves no purpose but stress everyone out.
