Assuming Cook clears waivers I think the Jets bring him back for the PS. I can see him developing into a back up type QB. Next year the Jets not only will be looking at drafting a QB early but will also need a back up as Taylor won’t be back. Cook at that point would at least be familiar with the Jets system.
My top two waiver wire targets are Dulcich (bye Ruckert) and Trey Palmer (bye Gipson). I have a bad feeling they’d cut Smartt instead of Ruckert because this franchise feels tied to him for god only knows what reason. But Dulcich is a receiving threat. He and Mason Taylor would make a solid 1/2. Blocking would definitely be an issue but Taylor has the tools. I think Cook clears waivers and hits the PS. I think at least two of Smith, Pritchett or Skinner are claimed.
Edwards has a very good shot and I wouldn’t be surprised if two of the receivers do. Pritchett already displayed NFL caliber ability in games and in practice. Smith and Skinner probably end up on the PS.
it’s just becoming more rare, like an unwritten agreement between teams to respect practice squads. If there’s a real standout, a tenured vet, or a big need it’s different. Edwards I think will not be claimed but his time might come later, someone might grab him midseason after injuries
Maybe they are not as talented as you think or our WR receiver room would not be universally considered a huge weakness. All of them are scrubs. I cannot get too worked up whether we keep some pathetic scrub over another and certainly I would not characterize it as extreme in any way. I do want to improve the room by adding better players than them, but whether we keep one scrub we have over another I don't think moves a niddle. They will probably clear the waivers and end up on PS anyway. With all that said, I would take one of them over Gipson, just that the difference is not that big IMO. And I hope Gipson will be moved later and we can get someone off another team waivers who is a little better.
Why are they all scrubs? Because our franchise who historically has 0 eye for young WR talent cut them? I’ve been pretty blatant about why I want to keep these players and it’s because they have shown flashes of being better than what we’ve seen. Not calling them great players by any means because we’re not in practice and we sure aren’t scouts. But when you’re young and rebuilding it makes no sense to keep the guys who have piss poor bodies of work in favor of guys who flash talent.
One notable thing that is not that good is that Cowart was put on season ending IR. It looks like he had complications with his ankle and needs several months to recover. For big guys ankle injury is a tough one. I was hoping he could come back at some point later in the season and gives us great depth. But now, while I like Phillips and Briggs, we need to stay healthy at DT. Tufele and Taylor are not confidence inspiring.
Admittedly Gipson puzzles me, but Lazard has shown flashes as well. He did have 530 yards and 6 TDs last season. Especially pre injury in 2024 he looked somewhat decent. Chances are none of the guys we waived will ever have a season like this in NFL. I know a few people disagree, but we are trying to win this year, and I think probability wise Lazard gives a better chance than the other guys. Gipson selection I have hard time understanding, but he was hurt and maybe he did better in practice than others when he was healthy. Again, we are talking about the bottom of weak WR room, so it's six of one vs half dozen of the other, very small difference. As far as why the guys we cut are scrubs, I think the better question is why not? They were not viewed very highly by anyone, not drafted, some lingered for multiple years and did not stick why any team. Likely they will clear the waivers too meaning no one else will want them. The only people who know them are hard core Jets fans, and even we admit the passing game and WR room in general is very weak, and they are at the bottom it.
Someone posted this on Twitter and it’s a good point “The Jets haven’t made the playoffs in 15 years. I honestly do not care who they cut off the roster today”
I saw this yesterday and I mostly agree. It would just be nice if they didn’t make headscratching decisions no matter how insignificant they end up being big picture.
https://x.com/tompelissero/status/1960737998493929877?s=46&t=eaLIxbRmBqelegocbpHIVQ Kendrick Bourne released. Free to sign with anyone. Prefer Trey Palmer but Bourne would be a nice addition if we get sniped or stupidly don’t put in a claim for him. That being said, he’ll have contending teams calling so he’s probably not joining a rebuilding one.
So, what is the time frame to place bids for players on waivers and start building the PS. Is it ongoing now?
To me only one guy who made the roster is a head scratcher: Gipson. It did look like Pritchett (JP) outplayed him, and Gipson sucked before too. JP is also two years younger. So, it seems like he should have made it over Gipson, but again bottom of the weak room, I am not going to kill AG/Mooge for it. Like I said before Gipson was hurt and maybe AG saw something in limited time he was healthy that made him think he gives a slightly higher probability over JP. I do like the fact they kept Hayes. OL did pretty well in general, and he seemed to have played well in preseason. With the injuries we had in the past to OL, would be a shame to have a guy from the strong group who did well - waived.
24 hours. Teams had until 4pm est yesterday to waive people to get to 53. Some were waived earlier though. So by the end of today we should know a flurry of moves. Hopefully the Jets will be amongst the recipients.
I read on one of the Twitter feeds - can’t remember if it was Hughes or Cimini that we will see names after around 12 noon. But 24 hours does sound right …
Right, some guys were waived before 4pm, so we should have some info by noon. Jelani Woods is a TE for instance who was released AM yesterday.
