It wouldn’t be the worst thing. There are stud QBs next draft and there is still a young core here the worst was going all in on a 42-year old and his butt buddies and then watching him get hurt 3 plays in
You don't get benched by one of the most respected coaches of one of the most respected franchises because you're good.
This is why it's fine. Fields in all likelihood will be benched at some point this year and will be in a training camp competition with a rookie QB next year, which he'll probably lose. I just would like to be able to watch my football team play coherent football. I don't think this is going to be the year.
Same here…though while I am also afraid that Fields’ play will be “bench-worthy”, I don’t think he will get benched because there is nothing behind him…all this talk of Taylor in camp but the reality is that Taylor is a backup QB at best at this stage in his career, and he has also been injury prone when asked to play more than one or two games, so even if we do bench Fields and put in Taylor, there’s a better than 50/50 chance Taylor would get hurt and we’d be right back to Fields again. Honestly, I think this year is about installing AG’s systems, giving Fields a chance to show he can be much more than he’s been to date, but also being realistic that we’ll likely be in the QB draft market next April, so leaving Fields in at the expense potentially of a couple more wins with Taylor seems to make more sense at least in the long run view…A couple more wins can be the difference of a few draft spots in a critical draft … and while I get wanting to win now and install that for AG’s tenure, it’s like cutting off your nose to spite your face…
"Hello? You play to win the game." Which means you go with the guy who gives you the best chance to win. If that guy is not here, Mr. Mougey needs to be on the phone.
It just doesn't really matter who the coach is when you have a bad QB. Fields is a 60% completion 1.5 TD:INT guy over his career. There are like 4-5 head coaches/offensive coordinators in the league who can succeed despite that kind of QB and odds are Glenn and Engstrand aren't among them.
NFL teams definitely do not do this. They are married to Fields for better or worse. That's the guy they put their eggs in the basket of. He's going to start no matter what and it's going to take him struggling badly to get him benched. I'm not ruling it out because I think he WILL be that bad, but I wouldn't be surprised at all if it takes til week 13 for this staff and FO to admit they flopped. At the end of the day though, it doesn't really matter. This isn't about this year.
I dont think they are married to Fields at all, thats the beauty of this short term relatively small contract but I also dont think they are gonna go benching him and acquiring someone new because of a few practices or Connor Hughes tweets
I don’t think they are married to him long term…the contract makes that clear…it’s a two year deal and not a lot of money for a QB…it’s clearly a test the waters kind of deal. I do think, however, we are pretty much married to him for THIS year…they need to see if he can develop and improve or not (likely he won’t but there’s always a chance). But it will be interesting to see what AG does as the season goes by if Fields just doesn’t improve…do they ride him out or do they make a switch to Taylor for the “best chance to win”? Time will tell
I mean that same franchise isn’t exactly known for handling or evaluating QB’s well before or after Roethlisberger though. It’s not like he got benched in Green Bay or San Francisco.
well I dont think they are or should be on the phone in early August because the starter is having a terrible camp. But I do think that they are married to him for this season. Like you said, the beauty is that we can cut ties next year. He got benched and the offense got better through the air and shockingly on the ground, which isn't great when a dude who is only known for his wheels gets replaced by a dude who can't really move anymore.
They'll make a change with just enough time left to work their way out of a draft pick that they could use on one of these QBs coming out in next year's draft.
Eh I guess but you were alluding to the Steelers/Tomlin somehow being good at handling QB’s not how the offense faired. And for what it’s worth, the offense got better when they played a bunch of bad teams/defenses. The last four games the offense was horrible to the point where they were talking about going back to Fields specifically in the playoffs.
obviously today Fields was shit based on any way you review him. definitely not good football. but in general we are reading into it a little bit incorrectly with the connor hughes tweets and the like. Look Fields is never ever going to complete 70% of his passes and look crisp out there. That's not his game. So the tweets "6-17 on the day" are kind of meaningless. He likes the long ball and that's inefficient. Fields might go 6-17 in an actual game but if 2 of them are deep balls then he finishes with 150 yards and 2 TDs it is a good football game despite the poor passing efficiency.
If Fields is completing less than half his passes and the Jets get to 3 - 8 what would be the reason to keep him in there? This is not the regime that kept ZWilson on the field just because.
Im not saying there’s a reason at all and I think your scenario is more likely than not. I’m saying I don’t think we will be in a rush to bench him and they certainly won’t be trading anything to find a replacement.
But then same guy wants you back as #1 option. Today's practice wasn't good, let's see how he rebounds back on Thursday.
You guys are funny, it's August. I think the defense should lay down and allow the offense to do anything they want then the scribes can report how wonderful they played. This day to day stuff is really silly.
