It's not the TDs and picks I care about, what I'm talking more about is the trends. Some days good, some days bad. Holding on to the ball. Late on reads. Delivering high. These are fixable things and after all this time and two staffs, they aren't fixed. Like I said, I hope this staff can be the one that unlocks it. It took three staffs for Darnold and Mayfield to figure it out.

Yeah…trying not to get too worked up over practice…and early training camp practices at that.

But still…Fields just hasn’t been a good QB so far and these things…slow processing, inaccurate throws, etc., are exactly what has made him what he is…a not very good QB on his third team in 4 years…so it’s a bit concerning that it’s the same issues that he’s always had. I did not like him coming out of Ohio State because all I saw was him in a clean protected pocket or running around for 5 seconds and throwing to wide open receivers…none of that happens in the NFL on any kind of consistent basis.

So to be successful in the NFL, he’s going to have to learn to speed up his reads, throw more accurately and consistently to the right receiver. Odds of learning that at this stage are not better than 50/50 I don’t think.

I think his legs will hopefully bail him out of otherwise bad plays, and he may be able to rip off a few long runs, but I don’t think he’s the answer for us at QB long term…I think it’s a long shot as I always say that Great doesn’t take a long time to show up…

I hope he can be at least midpack average for us, and any QB ranking above like 15 would be great to see…and I will be rooting for him as he seems like a good guy, but I’m not really all that optimistic … I think our offense will likely struggle and I don’t see a good playoff run because I just don’t think our QB is good enough, and in today’s NFL, to have a legit shot at the playoffs and a deep run in the playoffs, you need a very good to great QB, and I just don’t think Fields is it.

Hope I’m wrong, but for me, this is clearly a case of Hope for the Best but Expect the Worst

This is a decent take on today's practice and overall.

Up and down day for Fields, which is similar to other folks who watched. No one said he had a bad day. And also the sentiment is that he has done well overall. Other days, including yesterday, were mostly good. Tanner also commented with something similar today, up and down, but overall Fields had a good camp. I think so far so good, let's see what happens from here on out, especially during joint practices. But we are not at bad place at QB1 spot now.

A sad moment that seems to have passed me by, I might have dropped off into a coma by that point in the game.:D

Quinnen Williams out 1-2 weeks with a calf but it could be a blessing in disguise. DT is a big concern, now the focus will be higher on that position, either by bringing in someone else or increased reps to see if some of the other guys have it or not

    Faria:

"This is the kind of practice that can bring the #Jets confidence Justin Fields can become more than just a stop-gap. Accurate, decisive, and smart. This is the kind of day that shows he has it in him. Such an important sign of growth today"

On A Smith, he had a meme, basically dominant. Beat Sauce and several others to catch multiple bombs from both Fields and Tyrod.

Ok cool…well that’s good to hear then

I have serious doubts on both guys…Fields because we’ve had three years to see what he is and that hasn’t been very good, and Smith because I have doubts that a guy with too many drops in college can make a significant improvement on that in the NFL.

But hoping for the best with both guys

    Thanks for sharing!!

Heard the UDFA Page has been doing well. Not sure if true but it would be nice to find a gem late into the draft for once

Throughout the NFL most defenses are ahead and of offenses this time of year. The Jets are not special n that regards. If Fields was consistently dominating our defense this early w/ the talent they have on that side of the field and who’s coaching them, I’s be worried. The inconsistent results is what I would expect given a new OC, new offense and new QB going against our defense.

We all know that, but is good to receive a complete picture of the pluses and minuses. If it was a bad practice a few here would have immediately jumped all over his ass. Consistence does not mean perfection. Overall thru camp he has had a lot more good timely throws that bad.

That's the thing, he hasn't had any bad ones. It's either good or mixed. So far so good. One INT so far throughout entire camp and OTAs. I don't think any QB, perhaps with rare exception of likes of Mahomes, has this amazing practices with no mistakes every time. If that happens, that means 1st team defense sucks. Let's what happens tomorrow during scrimmage and then join practices. But I think so far it's been very positive for Fields overall.

It would be a small miracle if Fields turns into a good passer for us. It's just very unlikely given the type of passer he's been throughout his career so far.

Best we can hope for is that he avoids turnovers and his running ability combined with our running backs gives us a decent, if not high-flying, offense.

Some good news on Arian Smith, appears to have improved on his biggest weakness, the drops.

"Arian Smith had drop issues in college. So far, he has improved in that area. Says he wears strobe goggles during off-the-field hand-eye exercises. #Jets"

I don’t understand all the bluster on Fields. He’s our QB for the year. If he sucks he’s gone. He was the best option for the team this season, basically a lottery ticket. He has the physical tools, but he lacks the mental acuity to process what he needs to see fast enough. He’s basically Zach Wilson as a pocket QB, but he’s much more dangerous with his legs. If he puts it together mentally where he starts processing at a high level then he could be great. If not, he’s gone next year. The good this is if he ends up in that middle ground where he maybe improves but not showing that he’s a bonafide franchise guy we can hang on to him for another year at a cheap rate and have him compete with a young drafted QB for a season. This is a season to sit back and enjoy watching young guys improve, not one to be expecting to be a SB contender

Yeah, agreed…he is basically Zach with better legs…problem is, Zach is like a 3rd stringer and we’ve got Fields as our QB1

Although I agree that Fields was probably the best option we could have gotten last offseason, I really don’t have any expectation that he will develop beyond what he’s already shown to be…a bottom tier QB who can at least run and make some plays with his legs that will generate excitement. But I’m expecting to see, yet again, an offense that will continue to struggle, a QB that will not see open guys, who will hold the ball too long, etc.

Beyond just plain hope, there is very little tangible evidence to bank on Fields improving and suddenly “getting it” and developing into a very good QB…especially as we yet again have a defensive rookie HC and a rookie OC.

I’m a Jets fan and will be rooting for the team no matter what, and hoping Fields can at least be an average QB (say ranking somewhere in the mid-teens in terms of QBR or whatever metric we use for QBs), but will not be surprised if Fields continues to do what he’s done for 3 years now…

I remember Zach with absolutely awful practices many a time. During these days there was nothing positive to say. Fields has done much better. Even last practice today, where he went 2-10 passing wasn't really all that bad.

"Josh Reynolds drops what would have been a TD on a throw from Justin Fields. On the next play, Fields takes it in himself for six on a designed run."
"Mason Taylor with a drop. I actually think Justin Fields has been fine today. #Jets offense is moving the ball but the process is off. Fans start booing after a 10th penalty on the offense."
"Aaron Glenn said he thought Justin Fields had a good practice showing the kind of weapon he can be. Said there were some balls the receivers needed to catch."
"The good from practice: - Isaiah Davis looked really good. Breece Hall had some good runs. Justin Fields ran well. - Stone Smartt: 2TDs - Sauce dominated in coverage - Pass rush was pretty consistent The bad - 12 penalties, including a handful from the starting offense. - Justin Fields was 2 of 10 including a drop - Two injuries to WRs (Josh Reynolds, Xavier Gipson) - OL struggled in the pass game a bit"

So today, OL struggled in passing, many penalties, drops, and Fields didn't pass well, and yet overall we hear Fields was fine, ran for several TDs. So far I haven't heard where there is a consensus where Fields had even one terrible practice. Its either mixed bag like today or good like yesterday. There is always some good with Fields, and yes the fact he can run is very important. Like today OL struggled with passing, and Fields was able to get TDs with his feet. That is not a small thing. I think it's way different than when we had Zach.
