Heading out tonight at midnight for the Hudson 100 Square area,

Targeting Tiles and Tuna Bigeyes, Bluefin, Yellowfin, and Longfin.

Cman do you bait for tiles with a whole squid or half? Also do you put little strobe lights and weights top and bottom of your rig like they do in Florida?

I prefer using WHOLE squid for goldens. Partials work on bluelines but you have to construct a whole squid from the parts.

Since you're on a private boat, Chartreuse lights or glow plastic squids will do fine. Bring some 3/4/5lb lead too. 7/0 circle hooks and you should be in the game. Last trip we had to go up to five lbs and still scoped 200+ yds with 80lb test. Top and Bottom lead will help you not to have to layout a lot of line although on headboats, that's a no-no. 3lb bottom, 1lb top should do the job for you.

    Tight Lines!!

Heat wave up here means no fishing for a bit until it breaks. Daily temps over 95F and blazing sun. Stinky, you'd be right at home here as it does feel like Florida in August up here. :)

Fished South West corner of Hudson. Had lines in for 5 minutes when we boated our first Bluefin 25 lb. After that it was fish after fish, two three at a time.

Most were Rats with 40 lbers mixed in. Boated 15. Trolling mostly but, biggest fish was caught throwing a popper into a feeding frenzy 41.5 lb.

Switched to Tiles. Me on my conventional out fished all the electric reelers. Made our 6 man limit with 48 goldens. Drift was perfect. Used a 12 oz weight. Biggest was 17.5 lb.

Ride home was nuts, Had to pass up many pods of Bluefin boiling the water. I have never seen that many tuna. Literally thousands. They were feeding on small squid they pushed to the surface.

Counted about 30 Hammerheads swimming North.

Epic trip. I'm in Fishing Coma.

You held bottom with a 12oz lead? How deep were you fishing?

Psssshh.... you dont even know. When I visit family they'll bitch about the heat, and I just laugh "It feels nice to me". lol

anyway... took my neighbor out yesterday to try and get on the last of the nearshore bite before summer furnace water kicks in (water's been surprisingly clear)

trolled the beach first (live bait... pogies (bunker to you guys)
1 nice king mack and unfortunately 4 stupid sharks
then ran out to 9 mile reef to get away from those (losing too many rigs and baits) but it was slow... so ran out to a 16 mile wreck.
a bonita (albie to you guys), another king mack, jumped a sailfish that broke off :(, hand fed another fish behind the dredge that couldve been a cobia or another sail but stinger rig failed :(, had one fish come in so hot it sliced through single strand wire stinger and sliced the bait in half without pulling drag.

We briefly bottom fished when we were out of live baits. I asked the guy I brought to get ice and a small box of squid for the trip as I was working tues night... unfortunately he got some walmart squid that was TRASH. I jigged up another bonehead on the. slowpitch, then snagged bottom and broke off.... at that point it was time to start heading in....

fun day overall... especially in a 17' boat. Made a fresh poke bowl for dinner with a spliff and a beer :)

100 miles to 5 miles offshore. They were everywhere. Heard the closer fish had Yellowfin mixed in too.

Sounds like a great day that ended well!

Had a problem once with shitty squid from a food store down in Grand Cayman that came in a yellow / white box. Watched a Tuna spit it out!

ha yeah, I kinda scolded him about it, especially considering we have a mom&pop bait&tackle shop a few miles away...

Speaking of squid, the king mackerel spit out a fresh one on the deck (maybe cuttlefish?) so I guess theyre around here too... I still kicking myself over that sailfish. Wouldve been the 1st one on my little Sailfish. I guess my 7strand figure 8 knot failed when it jumped and landed on the line. I was down to my smaller "backup" rigs (ones I didnt like as much) after the sharks and other fish tore up the others....

Hopefully those tunas make their way north to Long Beach / Rockaway ;)

Let me know when you are up here so I can give you a fishing report.

Fish got fins and don't stick around. Case in point my buddy is in Plum Island MA catching big Stripers They are more or less gone from here.

Very encouraged by amount of Tuna I saw last trip though. Hopefully the squids and sand eels keep them around awhile.
