https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id...s-gm-joe-douglas-returns-eagles-scouting-role Source: Ex-Jets GM Joe Douglas returns to Eagles in scouting role PHILADELPHIA -- Former New York Jets general manager Joe Douglas is returning to the Philadelphia Eagles in a senior scouting role, a league source confirmed. Douglas served as the Eagles' vice president of player personnel from 2016-19. He helped build the city's first Super Bowl champion -- a squad that overcame the loss of a number of key starters due to injury, including quarterback Carson Wentz, to go 13-3 during the regular season before knocking off Tom Brady and the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LII. The run of success in Philadelphia led to the Jets hiring him as general manager in 2019. Douglas spent five-plus seasons in New York. The Jets went 30-64 during his tenure, with no winning seasons and no playoff appearances. He was fired last November following a disappointing 3-8 start to the campaign. Douglas, 48, started off as a scout for the Baltimore Ravens in 2000 and was part of two Super Bowl champions during his 14-year run there. He spent a year with the Chicago Bears in 2015 as their director of college scouting before leaving for Philadelphia. The Eagles lost two key members of their scouting department to the Las Vegas Raiders this offseason, with senior director of college scouting Anthony Patch taking a role as a senior personnel executive while senior director of scouting Brandon Hunt left to become the Raiders' vice president of player personnel. The Philadelphia Inquirer was first with the news of the Douglas hiring.
who didn't see that one coming? the league should investigate some of those interesting moves from last season such as the Jets letting Huff and Becton go (subsequently to the Eagles) and trading to take Reddick off their hands. You have to wonder if there was a back room promise for a job when those decisions were made
Becton I am not sure as we could not have kept him. He did not want to be here and even posted about hating the OL coach. But Huff/Reddick thing definitely Philly had us. Now, I believe it is just absolute incompetence on JD's part and not purposefully trying to help Eagles but my opinion of JD's abilities is EXTREMELY low. But yeah, he was so incompetent, it sure looks like he tried to help them! As far he new role, he is now a scout, same position he held with Baltimore 25 years ago when he was just starting out. He seemed to be pretty decent finding an occasional good player from UDFAs, if that's his focus he may do fine in Philly. He was a scout in Baltimore for 14 years, and now back to square 1, really where he belongs.
I’m still so disappointed that it all ended this way with JD…when he was first hired, I was really excited about him as I thought he had the pedigree working with both Balt and Philly, who I think are two of the best front offices in football, and I loved what he said about his strategy in how to build a team. While I absolutely HATED the Idzik and Mac hires both…I thought the processes were both so fucking stupid (Korn Ferry for Idzik and a GM committee led by Charley Casserly for Mac), and I didn’t think either guy had the resume or the background to do this. I knew those were bad hires from the go. But with JD I felt different…I felt like he had the experience, he had the background, he had the strategy, I thought he would be able to really build something. How wrong that was!
Also, Huff did nothing for the Eagles. Regarding the Reddick trade, I think JD thought he could persuade Reddick to take a team-friendly contract. He was wrong. It was a poor gamble that wreaked of desperation. On the other hand, Reddick was foolish not to sign a team-friendly contract.
Probably a reward for giving them inside info during the 2019 draft. Imagine an alternate reality where we actually traded the Zach pick to the Eagles.
Really, you think a guy who is GM of a team would intentionally sabotage his roster for a job guarantee as a scout ???? - LOL !!!!
Right then the Eagles and Douglas wouldn’t have to worry about the results of the investigation. Nothing wrong with looking into it
At least we can dream.... Imagine how many picks they could have gotten for the 2nd overall pick? They could have drafted a top o-lineman and WR and kept Darnold. Maybe Darnold would have thrived! Oh well.
Huff is like Jamal Adams. In obvious passing situations you can line him up in mismatches giving him an unblocked path to the QB. He’s not good when asked to play the position traditionally.
I don't think you were wrong. The GM's job is to acquire the talent, and I think JD did that very well. The failure was on the coaching.
Ultimately, his drafting was mediocre at best. Early on, he made some great trades, but made some bad ones towards the end of his tenure. His free agent signings were terrible overall. He wasn't able to acquire good QB play over his entire tenure. That's a recipe for failure and firing.
