UNLV’s QB sat out and transferred last year after starting 3-0 due to “contract” disputes as well.

The NCAA couldn’t have fucked this up worse if they tried self sabotage.

forgot about that bullshit you are right he was first

the NCAA took everything people hate about professional sports (roster turnover, holdouts, no salary cap) and made sure they added it to their leagues

I’m not defending the NCAA at all because they’ve been utter trash for most of my life dating back to the BCS percentage nonsense, but they’re probably just tired and scared of being sued.

I can’t blame them. They just got railroaded in the $2.8 billion settlement case and the more they try to “restrict movement” or not pay players but profit off of TV deals, the more they’re going to keep getting sued. So they effectively have said fuck it, players do whatever you want we don’t care.

That was my first thought when this hit. Matthew Sluka is the closest comparison but Nico holding out for more money is definitely blazing new ground. Plus, he’s like the perfect guy for this. He was lured across the country by fat collective cash when the (legal) fat collective cash era was just starting. As much as I love chaos at Tennessee, I don’t blame Nico. The House Settlement is coming. The majority side of Congress these days includes the dudes looking to step in and “fix” the “problem” of money and free movement in college sports. Nico has one lights-out bowl game and one good-not-great season under his belt. This might be the height of his football value and his last/best opportunity to tap it. I assume not, but who knows. Either way, love the drama.

His holdout stunt will cost him dearly in 2025. Tulane, Syracuse, UCLA and Texas Tech are the options.

The best bet to end up on his feet with a better deal is to go to one of those schools for less and play well, and transfer again next offseason

this transfer portal is a joke

Yeah, I didn’t say it was a smart decision, just that I don’t blame him for trying. But I also never would have predicted UT’s response. Clearly, he didn’t either. Or, more likely, his agent.

Totally with you on the portal. A problem of the NCAA’s own making. Decisions on granting exceptions got so friggin arbitrary, it’s like they slapped together a half-baked portal system just to avoid the problem. Funny irony - I think the last straw for the old transfer rules that led to this half-assed portal system was probably the Cade Mays transfer to Tennessee. Made zero sense and showed everyone on all sides of college sports that the NCAA was just making it up as they go.

They got unlimited transfers and unlimited contracts now, the only restriction left is eligibility and that will be gone soon

get ready for your favorite “college” to have a 30 year old “student athlete” at TE, he will be on his 7th school in his 10 year college career. It’s coming

It already happened with that tightend at Miami who got a 9th year of eligibility.

It’s a pretty easy fix too. One transfer without a gap year. No additional red shirts. Any additional transfer require a trip down to JuCo.

Brace for the madness - the window is now open.

And, in the least surprising story of the day, Nico apparently going home to LA to get beat around in the Big10. I didn’t give any real thought to Texas Tech until you mentioned it. Probably because they have a hand in every portal rumor these days. If this one was real, it was the perfect landing spot for Nico. Mistake #2 was not seeing that. Easier conference, crappier defenses, better chance to see the playoff, hot new OC, a collective fed with oil money. Plus, a TT passing tradition I’m sure they’d love to revive. Made all the sense in the world.

Why didn’t Michigan or Ohio State make a play at Nico? Was there some sort of restriction I’m missing.

He honestly might end up like JT Daniels, Slovis, Tyler Shough, etc. at this point. He’ll be a 5 or 6 year player that will be with at least 3 schools because there’s no way he stays at UCLA after next season.

Because Michigan already has that incoming freshman QB (Underwood) that they bought with a ridiculous pay-for-play deal.

Oracle founder Larry Ellison, 80 years old, has a cute little asian side piece girlfriend in her early 30s. She is a Michigan grad and convinced him to pay $10mill directly to a 17 year old kid to play QB at the "University" of Michigan

This is college sports now. fucking circus

These guys took a hard look at the future of college sports: https://jamesgmartin.center/2025/05/professionalization-is-killing-college-sports/

"To game out this litigation is to foresee both in-season trades and the return of former NFL pros to Division I fields. It is, in other words, to envision the final ruin of college sports as we have known them."

    Can you imagine that?

Zach Wilson busts with the Jets, so with another year of eligibility, he enters the transfer portal and gets $3 million to QB the University of Oregon.

    That’s where we’re headed

It should be noted that the writer claims no legal expertise or scholarship. And he teaches creative writing. So be it.

I've been saying this to my friends from the start ... what is to prevent a lawsuit from claiming that the four years of eligibility is an unlawful and monopolistic restraint of trade? Why should only college athletes be limited to four years of playing time? Why should former NFL and NBA players be prohibited from going back to college and playing for a decade? We're quickly reaching a point where there is going to be more money available to the 12th man on an NBA team if he goes back and stars on a final four team than if he remains on the bench in the pros. Now that the Supreme Court (in its infinite wisdom) has thrown out the NCAA's rules (because it is a monopoly), what is going to prevent any rule from withstanding a lawsuit and remaining in place?

From a salary standpoint we’ve already reached that point.

The NBA fills its last bench spots with “two-way contracts” NBA/G-League. They get a max of 50 NBA games with that contract. Even if they play all 50 they only make a little over 500K.

A final four star at “State U” makes a lot more in an NIL contract and is essentially a free agent every single year in the transfer portal.

The rest of your post is definitely something I could see happening. Unlimited eligibility is coming, no doubt. College sports as we know it is dead
