Not very inspiring….thats one of the worst WR groups in the league 2 of those guys drop too many balls, another can’t run routes and is too stupid to hold onto the ball until he gets in the end zone I was really hoping this group would be better after the draft but here we are Guessing we are going to have to use the TE and RBs in the passing game a lot
We got Mason Taylor though in round 2, now he has to be #2 pass catcher for us. He seems to be very smooth, reliable, and young. If Taylor does what we think he can do, we have our #2 pass catcher right there. But as far as WR, FA class sucked, and the draft wasn't really top heavy. I don't even like Tet. So, we were not going to end up with a great WR this year. Unless mid round rookie overachieves, and Arian still may. This roster cannot be completely fixed in one year. WR is likely going to be a priority in the next year draft if there is a better WR class, which chances are it should be as these things are cyclical. As far as what could have been done better to address the position, 1st of all, I did not see any better options in FA market that I liked for the price. And in the draft, I am not getting Tet at 7, and I think we did get a good pass catcher at 42. It's that 3d round pick, where I have the biggest issue with. Could we have moved 5 spots in the 3d to jump NE to get Kyle Williams, like the way Bills jumped us (twice)? Or anticipate the Bills move and jump ahead get that DT the Bills got if we liked him too? Or did they like Thomas so much, they were happy to sit there and draft him? I am not sure, but he'd better be darn good. Even Kyle Williams though is a project, though I think a cleaner one and was worth a small trade up in the 3d. I do hope Arian can find a way to improve though. If he can come in, improve drops and play, with Fields' deep ball ability, he could be a real weapon for us. Not holding my breath as he was a 4th round pick, but that's the hope that is still alive.
Taylor just cannot be the no.2 option in the passing game. no way. He's not ready for that they need to make a trade, sign someone (Amari Cooper?), or hope someone (good) gets cut
That's the thing, we really don't know. I think Mooge wanted to take him later, but there are 3 burners that just went ahead of us. How do we know there isn't another team that thinks the way say AG/Mooge or Gruden do about him? We just don't know. At the end of the day, it is not easy to find starting level players after the second round. JD could not find one after top of the second round in 6 years. We just don't know if Mooge can, but if it were so easy, everyone would be doing it. Mooge and AG clearly had their eye on Arian, had top 30 visit, and thought he is much better than consensus. We did have 5 guys drafted after the second round. All of them won't hit, but if 2-3 do, it will be good, and 2-3 better than JD. I do hope Arian will be one of them, his skill set would really help a lot at premium position.
He did get two offensive players before that and we really needed WR and DT. Who know what would have happened if Kyle Williams were still there or the Bills didn't jump us for a DT. But yeah, I was surprised, to me that was a questionable move.
Questionable certainly. but going defense after 2 offensive picks, and in the backfired? Not surprising
Yeah, I was really excited after the first two rounds, and kinda pretty disappointed after the next two rounds…both of those guys, the corner and the receiver, have legit questions…one for speed and the other for drops…which are pretty critical traits for their positions. It doesn’t really make me comfortable that they went against consensus on those guys…history has told us that while many times, our GM/HC think they are smarter than everyone else, almost all those times, history has shown that no, they are not. I get this is the first draft for our current team so who knows…maybe these picks pan out, but until proven otherwise, I’ll be pretty skeptical. They haven’t yet earned the benefit of the doubt, and at least based on team needs, I think the needs at WR and DT were higher, and they could maybe have found a way to maneuver differently and come away with a better option at receiver and some option at DT. Time will tell, but those two rounds really put a damper on my enthusiasm for the draft…I didn’t like either pick and like I said, I’ll be doubtful until the players prove otherwise, but I’m not too comfortable that you can teach a receiver how to catch…if he can’t catch by now, it most likely ain’t happening. And of course, you can’t teach speed. A corner may get away being a step slow at the college level, but NFL receivers will just eat that up.
I hear you about consensus, and actually agree. GMs think they know better but in average they do not. However, Thomas pick wasn't against consensus. It is actually better than consensus, as he is mostly projected higher than we picked him. I just personally don't like it since we had bigger needs and also I do not like corners that slow. But according to the consensus it was a good pick. Our draft was A rated after 3 rounds by almost everyone. The only one against consensus was Arian. And I am not sure how much consensus is worth that far in the draft where majority of prospects fail anyway, consensus or not. We are talking about 4th round here. Consensus matters more at the top of the draft when there are enough eyes on the prospects. Once you get past 3d round (or even earlier), very few people form the consensus, so it's not really that indicative of success.
I’m gonna be honest I didn’t really do much research on later round WR’s leading up to the draft. I’ve been watching a bunch of tape and this kid is fast as hell and he runs really nice, crisp routes. He also made a bunch of tough catches in tight covg as well. Obviously his highlight reel isn’t going to show his drops, and a 17% drop rate is concerning. But outside of that his tape looks really good. This kid might really surprise us.
These grades are meaningless. Multiple factors go into the overall success of a draft class and a big one is coaching. We'll see if this staff can coach up players. It would be great if the staff could coach up offensive players, which we haven't seen in decades on this team.
We know for sure there won't be any 2nd round (or early 3rd round) WR draft busts from this Jets draft! It's better to have a 4th round WR draft bust than a 2nd round WR draft bust. I like this new mngt team already!
I think we keep either Corley OR Smith when the rosters are trimmed in the Summer. Maybe try and stash Smith on the PS? I think Corley will have some value on this team as we implement more of a ground focused attack. He could be the Jet-sweep/bubble guy. I'm holding out hope for the kid Either way, these two guys need to HOLD ONTO THE BALL!
