Heh, one of the bigger Boston sports fansites I've regularly posted on for a few decades has gone down multiple times now over the last 2 days and partially due to a nuclear negativity spam over their first 2 picks. A lot of Pats fans people there would disagree with you lol
It's the opposite of a reach. It looks like a value pick for a guy they rated highly and fell. Position-wise, yeah it's not a need on paper, but it was more about value. Makes it all the more likely Brandon Stephens won't be here long
Well we certainly needed a DT and a WR more than we needed a CB, so feels like they liked the player enough that they couldn’t pass him up After Day 2 still have holes at DT and WR, so let’s see how we fill those tomorrow
A corner with some size and ball skills was needed. I remember watching Buffalo toss up some weak lobs twice to burn us in Buffalo for TDs. Losing 40-14 is no fun
In fairness there it is a message board driven largely by a very vocal analytic crowd. Who like a lot on this board were pretty universally vocal for the last few months about not liking Campbell's short arms and long term prospects at sticking at T. One of the guys over there that does this stuff for a living and who i've come to trust more then most come draft pick assessment time had this quick summary write up going in to the day on MT: TE: Mason Taylor - all around inline guy. Good route runner. Good after the catch. I love Mason Taylor and there isn't much daylight between him and Warren imo. Pick 38, Might be gone tbh he's so smooooth. Like buttah. He was the most wanted guy there after both Burden and Higgins went off the board. The fact it was the Jets ending up with both that and the more desirable T obviously fueled the flames even more so.
They got a great running back, I’ll give you that. Something we do not need at all. Half this fan base did not want Campbell because of the short arms, blah, blah, blah. We got the best right tackle, period. Feel pretty good about Taylor, enormous potential and immediate contributor as number 2 receiver. I don’t give a shit what other teams do as long as we improve.
Looking ahead to 4th round, I think we need interior defense stopper. We have depth in WRs imo, but not someone to tandem with Garret and Now Mason Taylor. Corley, Gipson and Irvin gained another year of experience and think they can get more reps now. Thus I don’t think we need a WR in rounds 4 and 5 imo.
Love the player and the value, cannot for the life of me figure out the fit. We’re gonna move the guy with awful ball skills that we signed for $12 mil a year to safety? That signing looks worse and worse by the day. Absolutely love the Mason Taylor pick though. Sucks knowing we could have had a top 3 TE in the draft and top 5-7 WR in the draft instead of top 3 TE and hopefully a top 10-15 WR
what is Taylor’s ceiling in this league though? At best he’s Dallas Goedert. At best (~500 yards / 4TDs) that’s my biggest gripe with this draft, they played it too safe. Warren was a riskier pick than Membou especially at 7 but his ceiling is that of a 1K yard double digit TD TE that you run your offense through Worth the risk IMO to shoot for that ceiling
So take this with a grain of salt, but I heard from an insider that Shedeur's fallen to Day 3 because his mom was sleeping with Deion Sanders.
I like what I've seen from Taylor after watching him some. Good hands, fluid athlete for his size. Lacks top end speed but I guess that's to be expected from most TEs. He'll probably be our best TE but I'm not sure how much upside he has beyond that.
I like the WR from Stanford, Ayomanor. He was the only guy who torched Hunter for anything last year. Hoping for him, and then maybe some late round run stuffers that everyone else always seems to get.
I’m worried about his drops but he looks like a solid #2 otherwise. Good size and works well in the 15 yd range which is where Fields should be looking if LBs and safeties are cheating up worried about the run. I’d prefer Royals if he drops to us, though. We could also get a good DT in Josh Farmer, although he’s similar to Quinnen. Some talented G’s to be had here too. Miles Frazier is big and has played every position but C.
In the post presser. Glenn said his game speed was just fine when watching the tape. That the tape tells you everything you need to know and that he plays the style of football they intend to play here. It's refreshing to hear a coach talk about the fact they drafted the guy based on tape primarily instead of some of the other shit that some GMs get lured into like combine numbers, interviews, etc... It doesn't mean it'll be a good pick but it was refreshing to hear this for me.
