Here is a potential list of somewhat affordable targets that can help navigate the offense in the near term. Let us not forget Taylor will be given a chance and our rookie QB will be given every opportunity to develop properly. I’m not writing the kid off 1- Tyrod Taylor 2- Jordan Travis POTENTIALS 3- Justin Fields 4- Kyler Murray 5- Jameis Winston 6- Kirk Cousins 7- Derrick Carr DRAFT One more potential Here are my thoughts. If we want more of a running QB option then Murray or Fields could hold the fort with Taylor while Travis develops. If more of a poor man AR version without any of the drama and willing to accept a more team friendly play calling plan then Cousins can be had for a mil or two or Carr, who BTW got along with Adam pretty well if I remember right. Winston will be the more risky option with higher highs and lower lows. Fire away
I don’t know what the fascination with Justin fields is. Tyrod is a better qb and it’s not close imo. Fields is below average.
looking around the league, teams with mobile qbs or even threat of running seems to have the most success. My opinion would be to bring in fields, draft te/ol at 7 and go from there.
So the dilemma is clear- there’s no good QB’s in the current draft. There’s just not. We also need to backfill alot of depth (what else is new) and we need OL quality and depth (again, what else is new). Next year’s draft has quite a few QB prospects that I believe grade much higher than Cam Ward, which means we need to be in position to take hopefully the best one. But…. We also need to be entertained this coming season. The answer is clear. Jameis Winston. Before you poopoo it, Jameis is entertaining as hell on the field. The dude can pop off a 5 TD 400+ yard performance….. and still lose. We’re not a SB team no matter who’s at QB, I don’t even think we’re a playoff team. I think as fans we have fallen terribly for the narrative JD and Saleh put out that we were a QB away. Our Safeties are ass, our OL is ass, our TE’s are ass, our LB’s are ass, and we need a #2 or #1 CB depending on your take on Sauce. Our depth is so bad that one injury to a starter right now means garbage truck drivers are in the lineup. We are rebuilding again whether you like it or not. So let’s do so while being entertained, on and off the field. With Winston we could have the most exciting 2-15 season ever and be right in position to draft Manning. The guy is a treasure when he speaks and he’s perfect to entertain us on the way to the #1 pick. I promise it’d be far more entertaining than watching an asshole like Cousins going 7-10 and knocking us down in the draft just enough to ensure more years of purgatory.
To me, yes right now he is not that good,. But he has been improving every year, and he is still just 25. He has every physical tool and dual threat ability. We've seen guys like Baker, Sam, and Geno put it together eventually. So, yeah, I mean if he was already very good now, he would not be available. But he has been decent enough (led Pitt to 4-2 record with solid stats), young, and pickings are slim. @IIMeanDeanII you followed Fields from College, have you watched his games lately, and what do you think about him now and his chances to perhaps take his game to next level, a la Sam?
Simply can't stand Jameis Winston but I love where you're going with it and the motivation behind it.
I still would much rather have Fields than Darnold. Fields looked good with Pitt. He still doesn't see the field like you would like though, I think he has a good shot at being a good one still. I'm rooting for him.
As I think more on it, I don't hate the idea of Fields. We're going to need to go into the season with 2 viable "starters." Almost no one gets out of the season without 2. Of the potential options, to date, Fields has the most upside and his age is a plus. Need to see what shakes out in the next month-ish.
Fields moves the ball because of his legs and has a pretty good deep ball. He just fumbles too much and sacks himself into 3rd and longs unfortunately.
Apparently Cousins had a non-disclosed injury during his interception streak. He could be had for the vet minimum. He may be more mobile this year, he did NOT have speed bridge surgery on his achilles. I would sign him and I would keep TT on the roster. Draft a QB in round three and have him battle it out with Jordan Travis for the third spot. Between Cousin's and Taylor you should get at least watchable QB play, while the third guy sits and develops...next year you draft a potential starter.
Fields is NOT a good QB. Not by a long shot. Problem is there are just not a lot of good options for us. Cousins and Carr are not currently options but either or both may become available, and both are better than Fields/Winston/Tyrod Taylor/or whomever else is out there. That being said, I HATE Cousins for how he played us to get a better deal in Minnesota, and in any case, he’s the quintessential stat guy who just never wins much, so fuck him. Carr I’d take a look at I guess…dudes tough, gets hurt, comes back, but in the end, he’s not that great, and really may not make sense to get him just to get to like 7 or 8 wins… So of the options, I guess Fields could be an option but you need the right OC to maximize his strengths and hide his many flaws. I don’t see him ever becoming a very good QB…those innate skills like seeing the field, reading a defense, if he doesn’t have it by now most likely he never will. But it could be fun to watch him run around a bit…probably a better option than Tyrod and if he comes cheap and free of having to trade for him since he’s a free agent, I could see it as a viable option…just not a very good one.
I’m willing to put his shitty move with the Jets behind me and take a flier on Cousins. He is to me a similar version of AR at this stage without the drama, and for a couple of millions is good insurance. I think Taylor is better than people give him credit for. Fields is an interesting option but we would need a CS with a very tailored game plan for him to optimize his skills and minimize his usual mistakes, like fumbling, patience behind center while avoiding sacks, and reading defenses. Behind a real strong running game, which we mostly ignored last year, he could be dangerous. I’m assuming he and Wilson could regain their college chemistry. Carr would be a solid interim solution if he stays healthy most of the season. The sad thing is that neither of those options might become available.
Signing Cousins would be just peak New York Jets. Release an old guy coming off an achilles tear to bring in a slightly less old guy coming off an achilles tear. At least they would be doing me a favor for next season if they signed him, as I'm not watching a down of Jets football with Cousins at QB.
Cousins arm looks dead. He was throwing flutter balls that’ll never survive in the Meadowlands, Buffalo, New England, etc. if those balls we’re getting pick 6’d in a dome.
Since we're not competing for the VLT in '25, what's the rush for a QB when we already have a placeholder on the roster. TT will suffice until '26 IF he stays healthy and with our somewhat improved OL, he just might make it through the season. Glenn's first draft should be for quality backfills and perhaps even a starter of need like say... RT/RG. We don't need another edge although if Carter is there, you have to take him. If our so-called "stars" can't handle this new direction? let them ask out now so we can parlay those folks into more quality DP's that we can certainly use. The ass-kissing/headline hunting era at Florham Pk. is over. Time for the NYJ's to grow the fck up and earn those game checks.
