Would love it for the Jets to have the re-union of Eric Mangini and Asante Samuel and get Samuel if Green. Thinks Samuel is as close to a Lock-Down Cornerback as their is in this league... I don't think he's lock-down by any means, but him in Green would be a boost for the secondary, a huge boost. Him and Dyson will be 26 and 27 respectively, good future.
I'd imagine fans of just about every team would love to have Samuel. I wouldn't get too excited though as he's going to cost a fortune and I just don't see us going that route.
$$$$$$$$=Samual , no thanks. I'm sure Mangini has already made plans on upgrading that position and they won't include high rollers. Drew Coleman and Hank Poteat both raised their games immensly toward the end of the season and I would look to see how far they can go.
Eek... I don't think Hank Poteat is the future.. However, I don't see the Jets dabbling much in the Nate Clements/ Asante Samuel sweepstakes.. the price tag will be too much.. especially after the rumors of a splurge this offseason because the cap went up..
Picking up Assante would be amazing, expensive or not, his best years are ahead of him and he is already a great CB. Him and Rhodes could really turn our secondary from average at best, to stingey. Although all this is true, i dont really like to invest much into us getting him, because like silent said, there is going to be a big bidding war out there for him, and its just not Mangini's style to get into a bidding match over a CB
How do you know? Mangini/Tannenbaum have $26 million in free agency and know what they need and don't need in the market. Now if you want to throw it, "look how Belichick does it." I agree, but Romeo Crennel got Gary Baxter, including a $10 million signing bonus, granit, the move has totally flopped and Baxter should of never gotten that much, but he went out to make a move. How do we know if Mangini will or won't go out and make a move?
Its true, i could see it go nearly either way, just because Mangini is pretty good at reelling in old Pats players (Hank Poteat....yeah i know thanks) Like i said, i would love to see it happen, and if we do get him i cant see how there could be a better offseason move that we could make, he is the one guy that can change our team around so much by just adding one player.
Samuel would be good to have because then we can REALLY shift our focus to the front seven of the defense in the draft.
There is no way I see the Jets shelling out the money he is going to command on the market, especially after the postseason he had. In any event , the Jets have far more pressing needs on the DL and OL than at CB.
If they're gonna use the franchise tag it will be on a 25 to 27 year old star player who is in his early prime and likely to improve over the course of the season. You can make an argument that Samuel fits that profile. Lawyer Milloy and Ty Law were both substantially older than Samuel when the Pats let them walk.
around Week 7 (or so) when someone posted that FA list, i was all about Samuel, because he had been solid and relatively unrecognized. now, however, he as blown up and teams will definitely get into bidding wars over him, something that Mangini and Tannenbaum probably want to stray from. furthermore, Mangini has done well developing DB's WITH an extremely solid Front 7. i think before they go and pursue any high-profile CB, they'll continue to build the Front 7 into a dominant force. so, i doubt they'll go after Samuel - although i'd love to have him - and at this point, i don't blame them. cheers
