This. I’ll preface that I’m an avid Rodgers fan. I don’t believe in all the conspiracies he does, but I do appreciate his willingness to question things. As a player I loved everything about him as well. I was happy when we signed him, I figured it’d be a great 2 year window to make some playoff noise. But missing mandatory camp to go to Egypt? I knew then that he wasn’t all in mentally. I suspected it when he pondered a potential VP offering, but Egypt solidified it. There are players in the league that missed their kids being born for football. There are players that played the same week as the death of a loved one. To miss mandatory camp for a trip to Egypt told me he’s not 100% committed to football anymore. Your unquestioned leader of the team has to eat, breathe, and sleep football and not be so easily distracted.
In this day and age you need a mobile QB. The final 4 teams all had QBs that can pass and run. And thats not even including Lamar Jackson!
Brother, It's not even a guarantee a team will even want, Rodgers. I mean.. He's clearly lost a step, he just got dumped, and is 41-42 years of age with a HUGE ego attached to his being. In other words.. He comes with very specific conditions that a team will not be able to avoid unless he changes his tune. That is unlikely. He isn't that appealing. I wish NYJ fans could see that aspect of it. I think it would help.
It wasn't amazing, but he did attend a lot more voluntary stuff than 2 mini camp practices he missed. Plus coming back from serious injury he ran practice squad just a few months after the tear. This is not an issue for me. For me the issue is performance, which - factoring further inevitable decline in 2025 and his immobility - I feel a good GM should be able to get close to or better for a fraction of the price (with the savings going towards short and longer term goals) and/or a younger player with upside. It was the right call to move on from him as much as I like the guy.
Debatable and even if he is better, not by a lot. Again, he is a year older next year. No mobility at all. More risk to get hurt. And even if he takes a pay cut from 38 mil, what would his new salary be? 25 maybe? Fields is younger, has upside (see Baker, Geno and Sam career resurgence), and will cost 2.5 times less. Heck Kirk probably will be available for 25 times less and can give similar production. All things considered it was the right move. Now, it does not end here, they still need to get someone. Though pickings are slim, there are some options, and it was right to give it a shot.
That in fact, is not all that matters. It's a team game. Not an individual game. The team is what matters. Aaron Glenn clearly understands that. Some fans don't. I'm looking forward to the direction they are taking things. They could very well fuck it all up, but it looks really good to me so far. I'm excited. Sorry you can't see that for yourself.
Aaron Rodgers was an advanced chess play on a team that didn't even know how to play checkers. Outside the type of shallow theory fan logic, which essentially ends up looking at player statistics as something that "just happens" for guys regardless where else you copy and paste them to, the NYJ were always going to end up being a terrible fit for the guy. 32 teams 32 potential outcomes, and he ended on one of the biggest destined loser squads of the bunch. It was a terrible roll of the dice for him. For an intents and purposes he didn't even have an NFL level OC here FFS. Or a single offensively competent mind in that coaching room. If he looks like the best current option on the board with that considered in I personally don't believe it's very debatable at all. He's clearly the best option at QB that will be available to teams this winter (with competent coaching and a plus line supporting him i'll take his 2025 over Darnolds's atm), and very likely imo better then any QB this Jets franchise is going dig up for the entirety of this new regime's run before the next blow up 3-5 years .
You're right. I have no frame of reference; I've only been a fan for 39 years. I'm sure it will be totally different this time.
Nobody else wanted Rodgers at that contract. It wasn't much of a dice roll, he had no other options also the OC was his handpicked guy so I dont think its wise to use that as an excuse
Rodgers will have options. This is a win-now league and there are plenty of GMs and Coaches under immense pressure to win and Rodgers is the best option out there. If I am Rodgers and I want to win I would only go to the 49ers, Vikings, Steelers, or Rams (if they traded Stafford). If those teams don't want him then he should wait for the inevitable QB injury for a spot to open. Going to a team like the Raiders is basically a lose-lose situation. There team isnt good and they are in the best division.
I am not sure Rodgers will have a lot of options. There could be some available in case of injury to sign him at a veteran minimum or close to it, but no where near what he was scheduled to make here. There is also a decent chance he retires, probably 50/50 at this point, maybe more.
Is AR going to get another gig? most likely. He still has enough in the tank to give a contender a shot with a good year and he deserves it. But people here are dreaming thinking a lot of teams are just salivating at the idea to have AR join them come hell or high water, without first establishing specific expectations. There is just too much baggage that travels with AR. Top HC will not put up with him setting the ground rules like the previous Jets CS. No way in hell. That will not happen in SF, or Detroit in case of injury, nor with the Stealers, and for sure not with the Rams. He will have to accommodate change and accept the team playbook with some tweaks, not a wholesale change. More importantly, AR might have to face the fact that the teams that come on calling have either a relative low chance of success, like the Raiders, or the Titans or the Saints, or a contender with a QB injury. IMO, It would have been a less desirable situation for the Jets new leadership to start with him and his tailored playbook, not to mention the dynamics or not utilizing the entire offense, which demoralizes a young team not accustomed to winning, and in an era where the future is tied to a mobile QB, supported by a strong running game, and a defense that gets after the QB with a vengeance. We need to start building the pieces for that now, and we need cap and draft picks. Staying status quo was not the long term answer.
Oh, then we better get an aging QB with lots of experience. Are any of those available? And then give him the best offensive line in the league. Also, we would need to replace Glenn with a Top 5 all-time head coach and the all-time best defensive coordinator. And let those two guys pick all the players instead of a no-name rookie GM.
This is the smart play for Rodgers. Just sit at home and stay in shape until a title contender loses their QB in Week 1-4. You never know, Mahomes, or Hurt, or Goff could get injured for the entire season.
