Fields is a slow processor that holds on to the ball. 3 different offenses in 4 years hasn’t helped in that area. He fumbles a lot too. What he is not; however, is an inaccurate passer. He’s above mean in that department and one of the best when it comes to deep balls. So let’s be “accurate” with our criticisms. https://x.com/PFF_Steelers/status/1769728494424969370
This is another reason to get an offensive guy to coach in our case. We do not have a QB. Hopefully at some point in a year or two we will get a young promising QB. And if there is any success, chances are we will need to cycle though OCs if we have a defensive coach. It is so much better for QB development to maintain that continuity. In defense the impact is not as significant than for QB, so I would prefer to have a current successful OC as a HC. If we already have a Josh Allen or Mahomes, sure we can take Aaron Glenn or another defensive guy. But with the need to get and develop a QB and probably do it without a top 2 pick, it's hard for me to get excited if we have a defensive head coach again.
One way to curb the effects of losing your OC is by promoting w/iin. In theory it should diminish drastic changes in scheme and verbiage. When you do wholesale changes every year or every other year on the offensive side of the ball, your young QB will be fucked.
That's what Vrabel tried to do with after Smith with Downing and Kelly and got fucked. Well, at least used one of a HC's possible two lives... Unless your HC is on offense, it's just that much harder without established QB.
Yah I get the pickings are slim and there’s not much there in terms of QB talent…if we had a Kingsbury type guy as HC I’d be more open to taking a cheap flyer on Fields to see if he can work with him…if we go with a defensive guy it’s just gonna fail
It seems like every time the Jets have a rookie passer, their new offense is WCO-based has the most complicated terminology possible.
LOL I specifically remember a quote from Paul Fucking Hackett back in the Herm days where he said that it takes players like 2 years to learn the WCO he ran. I was flabbergasted…like really? It takes two whole fucking damn years to learn how to run on first and second down and then attempt a pass short of the sticks on third fucking down and then punt? I HATED that guy…what a fucking joke
Kinda funny but out of all the options out there, he may very well be the best one…if we are looking at guys like Fields, Winston, maybe guys who may become available like Cousins or Carr, yeah Darnold is probably better than any of those options, but I doubt he’d consider it
Yeah, while I would gladly take him back (didnt want to dump him for zach in the first place) But unless he somehow has no other options, I'm guessing he tells the JETS to pound sand...
Darnold has everything a QB needs except for the ability to compose himself during high stress situations. He presses and allows the moment to overwhelm him. This is NY, he’s just not built for us.
I think with proper compensation. And a serious discussion and realistic goals and understanding he would be a bridge QB. While we build the roster. I think it's worth bringing him in for an interview and offer.
I'm an admitted Darnold defender but I think he's fine in high stress situations. Players and teams sometimes have poor games. Mahomes had a worse outing in the Super Bowl than Sam did against the Rams and (completely correctly) nobody is worried about Mahomes falling apart under pressure. Not even saying Sam is anywhere near Pat Mahomes, just making the point. Sam had a fantastic season and is a very serviceable QB. Every NFL game is a high stress situation. The Jets aren't likely to come out of this offseason with anything as good, let alone better than Sam Darnold. And I feel like there is just a tiny bit of irony there. And by tiny bit I mean hilariously, depressingly and crushing.
Some team is vastly going to overpay Darnold for the next 5 years for 1 year of solid production, please let it not be the Jets, as painful as it sounds it’s time to develop another franchise qb, if he wants to come here on a prove it one or 2 year deal sure if not we will surely suck next year and get a top 5 pick to draft our franchise qb
I still feel like the Jets roster is a pretty good one. Making the ballsy assumption that Aaron Glenn and staff end up being a solid cohesive unit even with XYZ quarterback like a Kirk Cousins/Tyrod Taylor combo or something I could see the Jets putting up 7 to 9 wins next year with average "luck" otherwise. But your right.... it'll probably be a top 5 pick dumpster fire lol.
another old asshole qb coming back from a injury? Should have just kept Aaron Rodgers, the guy used us to get a fat contract years ago he can go f himself. It may be painful to suck next year but do the rebuild right this time
Is there a thread now to discuss QB options beyond Taylor? Wonder which way is the leadership thinking
This team and roster still needs to be able to win/learn to win games. You can't amass talent and not win. And without winning culture means shit
Darnold is an option you potentially bring in to an already established system that's being headed by a level of competence nobody is second guessing can get the most out of it's players. Or pretty much the exact opposite surrounding situation of the New York Jets. 2025 needs to be an experienced bridge and very low commitment option. Bring in the cheaper value vet like Winston we should of brought in 2 years ago before all the super bowl bound koolaid guzzling began, or maybe Cousins if you get him on the last winter Russ'like 1 year flyer by offering him a guaranteed starting gig. Re-evaluate a year from now and only after we find out if we made a decent OC hire, or simply brought in Nathaniel Hackett v2 based solely on fact a guy happened to breathe the same air as Ben Johnson while being a buddy of the new HC.
