https://sports.yahoo.com/jets-hire-former-vikings-gm-155525112.html “What I’m doing, I’m going to be helping in any way that I can with Aaron Glenn, with Darren Mougey, the new general manager,” Spielman said. “Right now my biggest project is trying to rebuild the football operations side of things. So, there are a lot of changes going on up there, and I kind of feel honored and privileged that they called me and asked me to be a part of it going forward." “Aaron Glenn and Darren Mougey are the final decision makers,” he later added. “I'm just there as their sounding board to help them and support them in any way.” ======= The bolded has been necessary for a decade if not more, so this is good news IMO. It feels a little shady, but I also don't give a shit. Just fix it. Don't care who does it or how they do it, just get it right.
Why is it shady? Chris was hired to find GM and Coach. He did that and his job was done, no conflicts there. Now, he probably did that in a way that impressed Woody, and he hired him too in a more permanent role as an advisor. This makes a lot of sense to me. Now, if he hired himself or his brother as a GM, it would be shady. But he essentially was already advising him temporarily, and Woody basically made it permanent. And the fact it was Chris who impressed him and not Tanny, whom he knows for a long time is also telling.
He made a fair point, Rick Spielman recommends Mougey and then Mougey hires him in return. Chris Spielman is in Detroit
I think you mean Rick. Either way, it's undeniably shady that a consultant who helped you with your search ends up getting hired full time at the end of it all. I'm really not that concerned about it, like I said I don't care who it is or how they do it, just fix it.
Why do you think Mooge hired him? I think Spielman will work directly for Woody, exactly like his brother Chris in Detroit. It sure seems like Woody hired him.
Yes, I meant Rick. Consultants get converted to full time very often if the employer thinks they did a good job. He was a consultant for a project to advise Woody and then was hired to be an advisor full time. He did not recommend himself for GM or anything like that
So we bring in Rick Spielman as a consultant to help find a new GM that ends up recommending a guy who then in turns hires him to a full time gig. Nothing Jets'y sounding about that. This whole new regime transition feels like Saleh v2 to me, and more backwards logic bs that endlessly struggles to comprehend that it all starts with an ability to to put points on the board. Glenn isn't going to rah rah or "culture create" a solution to that problem any better then Saleh could if/when this latest flavor of Nathaniel Hackett'like credentials OC hire falls on his face. Kinda leaning towards wanting Rodgers back in 2025/26 atm just for the higher upside seasons before the next blow up 2-3 years down the road.
Who said anything about getting hired full time? He is an advisor. Who cares how many hours he puts in? Do you think he is bound to harm the rebuilding process?
It’s a great move no matter how you slice it. After the last mess is more than warranted. Nothing shady about it. He was a consultant that impressed Woody and was hired as advisor. Happens with major corporations often.
We dont know who hired him, Spielman announced this himself lol. I think it would be odd if Mougey was not involved in the decision
He's going to be drawing salary in a position of influence so he'll have a voice in the process. How much influence that voice has doesn't necessarily reflect how much work he puts into the job.
Can we confirm who he reports to? Woody or Glenn/Mougey? There def needs to be some addressing in our operations so the experience will help but I don't want to impact anything the new HC and GM are doing which sounds like he wont
I don't know if they will actually keep providing their reporting structure at this point but my guess is that Glenn, Mougey and Spielman all report to Hymie. Mougey was borderline kissing Hymie's ass during his welcome presser.
Looks like we finally got our VP of Football Ops in the bldg. without the VP Title. The description of his duties certainly read that way. He does seem to have the most Mgmt. experience in the bldg so I'm good with this hire. Hopefully he can get that side of the house in order without having to tear it all down.
I am sure Mooge and AG did not block this move or he would not be here, but I would be absolutely shocked if he is not reporting to Woody directly and it was not Woody who hired him. Then I would agree with you. But in absence of that, converting consultant to employee is generally a VERY common practice, there is absolutely no conflict of interest or anything shady there. Chris is a qualified person to be an advisor, which is why he was an advisor in consulting capacity to begin with!
IMO he will be a great asset looking at the big picture and advisor to the leadership. He will keep Woody away from the details and out of the GM And HC hair. So that is a great step forward
