Best Jets link I've seen in quite a few years!!! No Downing, no Carter and most importantly, NO HACKETT!! Rodgers can walk if he has a problem with this new CS.
Hope this indeed means he's officially gone. What a relief. And I'll take that, but I have to say, I was hoping for a little more fanfare around his ousting than this. Didn't even see a beat writer report it
I know I’m the Debbie Downer and admittedly like all of us I know virtually nothing about this guy. What I do know is it’s hard to do cartwheels for a guy that wasn’t taken as the OC for the departing former OC headed to CHI, nor was he made OC to replace said departed OC. So he actually had 2 potential opportunities to become an OC under his familiar OC or his familiar team and was passed over for both. Just sayin…
Don’t kick a guy when he’s down, there didn’t need to be a huge announcement for Hackett’s dismissal.
I was reading up a little on the “passing game coordinator” role in the NFL. Essentially it’s an expansion of the WRs coach role. They work with the WRs then they start designing their routes and get a promotion out of it so if you think of it that way, we got the Lions WRs coach as OC. They did a good job developing St. Brown and Jameson Williams lots of WRs coaches end up being good OCs by the way. Sirianni was a long time WR coach
That is exactly my worry. So either it will be the Lions making the wrong decision about him or the Jets. And we all know historically we have not been good decision makers.
I've often found, when it comes to the Jets, to error on the side of worst possible scenario always happening. It sucks, I'm usually a VERY positive person.............I know, pick yourselves off the ground........Mezz? Positive? I am a positive person but I've really just gotten to a level where, "If it can go wrong, regarding the Jets, it will go wrong." You have no idea how much I HOPE Glen is more "Bill Parcells" and less "Saleh!" I hope Glenn rips whatever disease is in that locker room out and burn it! I want to be excited talking about this team again. I LOVE football and I'm running out of positives.
As a NYJ fan for 58 years I expect the worst and hope for the best. OMG, I just realized (tongue firmly plantedin cheek) that I have been tethered to the NY J longer then I am married... If it wasn;t so sad, I laugh....
The whole not going to Chicago with Johnson and not getting promoted in Detroit is interesting, however I read both said great things about him. Campbell might not have wanted a first time signal caller in a Super Bowl or Bust season for the Lions. Johnson not taking him with him to the Bears is a little surprising though. Not sure his reasoning. Glenn also worked with him and felt he was worthy of being his OC though, which is all that matters. Not like he just chose a random guy who was passed over by Campbell and Johnson.
The OC staff now has Turner, London with significant coaching experience, albeit for Turner his stay in Washington and the Raiders was extremely challenging. They could help AG more than Engstrand for HC lessons learned, With Engstrand at the helm, I’m curious who will put together the entire new playbook and how significantly different from the existing one will be. So much hinders on which QB we are really going to roll with, but to be clear….none of them has any previous exposure to AR and his play style…so to keep him, the transition will be most interesting in 2025.
First-timers at this job haven't exactly worked out well for us. How was his offense rated in the XFL? (joking) At this point I gotta go with what Aaron Glenn is happy with. Shrug. I suspect the other Aaron is putting out feelers.
I'll go out on a limb and say the lions made the wrong decision on OC. True, I know little about Tanner, but I think Morton was worthless as jets OC. I think the jets were 28th in offense the year Morton was OC, and the jets obviously were not impressed to keep him. I read that Morton also lobbied worthless GM Maccagnan to take potential late round Alabama WR A. Stewart in the high 3rd round, with Morton calling Stewart "the next Steve Smith." Stewart barely lasted 2 years in the league. Does say something about the ability to spot talent.
It's funny, Engstrand is so unknown, we even got his last name wrong in the subject line I personally preferred Caley just because he worked with McVey, but otherwise the resumes are pretty similar. Tanner spent time with Jim Harbaugh in two College teams, which speaks fairly highly of him and also has been a passing game coordinator with Ben Johnson for 3 years when their offense was top 5 each year including #1 last year. Now of course most of it goes to Johnson, but Tanner was the next guy there. He also has some play calling experience in College and XFL. Of course there a matter of Campbell passing him by in favor of Morton, but I do know Campbell really likes Morton from when they worked together for the Saints, and as @tomdeb said, it is possible he made a mistake. Overall, a solid hire, has some upside, but there is plenty of risk as well. With the TE coach from Detroit who is now going to be OL coach for the 1st time, it looks like they are trying to replicate Detroit offensive success, which does make sense, but still, these guys need to go out and do it, which is easier said than done. There is some hope. When you hire a defensive guy, you are inherently at a huge disadvantage when it comes to offense, and we are at the mercy of the unproven guys to get the offense improved. And granted the bar is pretty low, but still... Roughly it's the same situation as when Saleh came in, just instead of Bob it's Glenn, and instead of MILF we have Engstrand with similar resume, instead of SF OL coach (they had good OL also), we have a Detroit one. Identical concept and the only one that Woody believes in apparently, just different actors with similar resumes, who will hopefully be better than their similar predecessors.
Agree with your assessment. I might add if we replicate the offensive approach of leveraging a strong running game behind an even stronger OL I will be quite happy. I don’t want to put the emphasis on pass first, be it AR, Taylor or a rookie.
Now about that 800lb gorilla sitting in the corner weighing his options.... Does anyone here really think AR will bother to take the time and learn an entirely new system, cadences etc. at this point in his career or are we looking at another year of delay of game flags because he changed the play? The Legend learning from a rookie OC? I wouldn't bet a dime on that happening no matter who the HC is.
