Looks like the Stone Age of Offense is over for the Jets now. BFF Hackett and Downing are gone so The Legend will have to weigh learning a modern offense or moving on.
Really like the Engstrand hire for the simple fact that he has experience with Glenn already. Jets doing things right!
Damned i misspelled his name on the title. Mods please help Very interesting background before him joining the Lions in 2020.Engstrand, who played QB at Grossmont College (2000-02) and San Diego State (2003-04), started his coaching career as a graduate assistant at San Diego under Jim Harbaugh in 2005. Over 10 seasons with the Tritons, Engstrand was a GA (2005-06), RB coach (2007-08), QB coach (2009-10), OC & QB coach (2011-12) and assistant head coach, OC and QB coach (2013-17). He rejoined Harbaugh at Michigan as an offensive analyst in 2018 before being named the offensive coordinator/RB coach of the XFL's DC Defenders in 2020. Once in Detroit he moved up fast. Initially joining the Lions as an offensive assistant in 2020, Engstrand also served as Detroit's offensive quality control coach (2021) and tight ends coach and passing game coordinator (2022). Promoted in 2023, Engstrand help the Lions set franchise marks in total net yards (6,712) and TDs (58) as Detroit finished No. 2 in net pass yards (4,401), T4 in pas TDs (30) and No. 5 in yards/attempt (7.60) I’m surprised he did not get the OC job in Detroit after Johnson left.
Same, but their loss. Maybe considering all of the coaching staff losses they wanted to bring in some guys with more experience? And/or guys who might not jump ship for a new opportunity after a year or two?
I like everything the Jets have done this offseason but I’m a bit uninspired by this. Glad to see he has OC experience but his offenses were with monster running backs against meh competition. The whole Lions offensive coaching staff still leaves me skeptical. They had a QB that went to a SB before, the best offensive line and RB combo in the league for two straight years. I am not sure if it was scheme and development or talent. They developed Amon-Ra and LaPorta of course but LaPorta was also a high drafted tightend.
Well, at least it seems like a lot of great talented players that play together as one team. So that is a positive about coaching to me. Uncoordinated individual talent like Jets on the other hand.
Let make the Hackett blow job disappear. If A Rod is down for the ride fuck it we got nothing else at our pick position
Pretty sure they did it quietly. Downing and Hackett are a combo. With the new OC in place, they have no role and more importantly, no leverage as Rodgers soon might be gone as well. There is NO earthly reason why either one of those bums should still be in the bldg.
I like the hire. Part of one of, if not the league's best offense in recent years. There's definitely talent there, but much of it was developed or got better in the setting. I mean, Goff was nowhere near this good prior to Detroit nor was Montgomery. They were doing something very right. I'm not afraid of a first time NFL OC either. It's a worthwhile risk. Look at some of the experienced OCs we've had in recent years. The best of the bunch were first timers. Regarding Hackett, I hope they let him go and don't keep him as some sort of BS advisor or game planning role, but I don't think the latter happens. If Glenn is serious about building the best staff and team, Hackett will not be on it. And that will put his 'it's not about Aaron Rodgers it's about the roster' into practice. Build the best staff and team you can and make Rodgers get on board or get out. Sick of the shitty players and coaches to placate Rodgers but otherwise bring the team down. Would be a fantastic sign if Hackett and Rodgers unqualified buddies are gone
Every stench of coaching ineptitude has to be removed from the building, no exceptions for anyone or their feelings about said coaches...
He started his coaching career at 23. He's 42 now. Has called plays in college and as LA stated above he gas worked under Jim Harbaugh at two college spots. That is a lot of experience... anyone who thinks the guy is inexperienced as a play caller is not accurate. WE understand he is afirst time NFL play caller, but he has done it quite a bit at other levels. I would think that not many first time NFL play callers have that much experience for his age. Does this mean he'll be good? No, of course not but I would venture to say that he is better then Hackett and his CS. For me, this hire has some nice upside at least.
