I never thought that I would live to see the day . . . +++++ https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profo...to-make-brian-schottenheimer-their-head-coach Report: Cowboys closing in on deal to make Brian Schottenheimer their head coach The Cowboys are closing in on a deal to make offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer their new head coach, Clarence Hill of All City DLLS reports. Hill said the sides are expected to “cross the finish line” today or no later than Friday. Schottenheimer fits everything that owner Jerry Jones covets in his head coaches. He will come inexpensive relative to other head coaches in the league, as Schottenheimer had no other interviews. Jones, who doubles as General Manager, maintains control and continues as the face of the team. And it’s someone with whom Jones is familiar. Jones’ eight previous hires were former head coaches and/or had familiarity with the Cowboys. Dave Campo and Jason Garrett were Jones’ previous hires who had no head coaching experience but were promoted from the staff. Schottenheimer, 51, is the son of longtime NFL head coach Marty Schottenheimer. Brian Schottenheimer joined the Cowboys in 2022 as a coaching analyst and earned a promotion to the OC job when the Cowboys and Kellen Moore parted ways before the 2023 season. Schottenheimer did not call plays under Mike McCarthy, who parted ways with the team when his contract expired Jan. 14. The Cowboys also interviewed Seattle assistant Leslie Frazier and former Jets head coach Robert Saleh, and they had a virtual interview with Moore, now the Eagles offensive coordinator. Schottenheimer became the betting favorite for the job earlier this week, and momentum began building for Schottenheimer’s hire after he had a second day of interviews on Wednesday.
Wow…color me shocked! The Cowboys, as much as I hate to say it, is probably the most prestigious HC role…I hate the team but it is a huge brand…right up there with the Packers and Steelers I don’t know, my memories of Shotty as our OC are not good…how many times were we on a bit of a roll on offense and then he’d call some stupid trick play like a double reverse or fleaflicker that would lose like 12 yards and kill the drive? I feel like that happened a lot. Too cute for his own good.
There certainly ARE a few but the Cowboys is not one of them. I'd give my left nipple and my right ball to be able to have 12 win seasons over and over. Shit, people on this board keep throwing around words like playoffs. Umm...how about winning more than 7 or 8 games in a fucking season first. Just SMH... You know, just because some on this board think Shotty is a waste is exactly what the Cosmos needed to ensure the Cowboys go to the SB next year just to SPITE us for being, dare I say, arrogant!
The Cowboys are the Yankees. Not getting to an NFCCG in 30 years is like the Yankees going 2 decades straight without a WS appearance. Different expectations.
I don’t think Shotty was a good OC, but I do actually think he’ll be a better HC. He’s just not a great playcaller in my opinion. The HC shouldn’t be hired to do what he did as coordinator, but their voordinator background generally aligns with the essence of how they want to win. A DC turned HC typically puts in a mentality of ball control a strong defense. They’re boring as fuck to watch and get bounced out of the playoffs every year because they can’t keep up with high powered offenses. A former OC turned HC shouldn’t necessarily be making playcalls or be involved in the minutia, but come draft/FA period they’re usually the last one in the ear of the GM advocating tor players. DC’s tend to want DT’s. See the theme?
I like your point about the DC mentality…in today’s league the rules are skewed heavily towards offense. You’d like to think that you can build a great defense, but in the end, you really can’t. There will ALWAYS be a bullshit roughing the passer or pass interference call at the critical moments to protect that high flying QB and keep the offense on the field. You just can’t defend it. Mahomes will get the BS roughing calls like he got two of last week. Guys like Lamar and Hurts will be allowed to run at will and then just slide and god forbid if the defense jumps over him and sniffs the helmet that’s a call. The days of great defenses are done. The NFL doesn’t want them around. Which is why the way to win is really simple…you just need a franchise QB. Belichick is a defensive coach but Brady got the calls, his OL was allowed to hold all day long, like KC is (don’t forget when they played us and Mahomes had like 30 seconds of time back there with all the holding), and so he won a ton of superbowls. So you’re right…that style of play is boring, but worse than that, the deck is stacked against you. You just can’t go through one playoff game, let alone several, without a few key roughing or PI calls. You just can’t.
I wish him well. Yes our roster was good but he took a crappy QB Sanchez to 2 AFC Championship games. I am still thankful to him. Is it confirmed yet though? Didn't see it anywhere.
