You and I started this discussion. I said no HC can be successful in this modern NFL without a damned good QB. You challenged that. Sure you need a decent team around it but the winning formula is a top HC and QB, one without the other is not enough. Nine of the last ten years proves that. Foles played a perfect game on the SB better than most. So From Bradshaw, to Montana, to Brady, to Mahomes, QBs create championships and that’s what legacies are made from.
I agree with this. You have outliers like, Marino. ..but I do agree. Do you think Woody will ever get this right though? I don't. It doesn't look good for the near future at that position either as a fan. Trust me, I'm ready for a damn good QB to be a part of this thing. I just don't see that light at the end of the tunnel.
I am not cherry picking anything - look at the teams that regularly make the playoffs - they all have top 10 QBs on the roster. Going back another 10 years: - 2014 - Russel Wilson - ranked 8th in 2014 - 2013 - Joe Flacco - the next decades equivalent of Foles - 2012 - Eli Manning - 2011 - Aaron Rodgers - 2010 - Drew Brees - 2009 - Ben Roethlisberger - 2008 - Eli Manning - 2007 - Peyton Manning - 2006 - Ben Roethlisberger - 2005 - Tom Brady And as I said focusing on the SB winner is really a bit of a red herring, its better to look at which teams were maming the playoffs on an annual basis, or going deep in the playoffs as that gives you a shot - they pretty much all have top 10 QBs.
Unfortunately with all the stupid changes that now favor the offense, teams of past decades are no longer very good quantifiers... Personally I much prefer old school "smashmouth" football but.... "To live in the past is to die in the present"
The Commanders have turned around their entire franchise due to Jayden Daniels. No doubt QB is the most important position to get right. Joe Burrow did the same in Cincinnati. Patrick Mahomes in Kansas City, etc. Then you have the 2009/10 Jets with Sanchez, Jaguars team with Bortles, Lions team right now with Goff, some of those Titans teams, etc that can win without the QB being elite. Tough to win the Super Bowl though.
Oh, well that is an excellent question, and the answer is no confidence in Woody all together. He needs to select top leadership and trust them to get it right. I dont think he can do that
I don’t think anyone would argue that you need a top QB to be a consistent playoff team and a multiple Super Bowl winner. It is what it is. And fully agree that going back more than like 10-15 years becomes a bit of an irrelevant comparison as the rules and the officiating these days are just so slanted towards the offense and specifically the QB that prior decades are a completely different game. Back when Bradshaw was winning 4 superbowls, the top QBs were completing like 50%-55% of their passes. That’s a different game. And on a side note, I hate the QB slide bullshit…I’m all for protecting QBs, but if your QB is going to go run around then when he’s running, he should be treated like any other player running around…should be able to hit him and hit him hard. If QB doesn’t like that, then don’t fucking run. Pretty simple. Protect him in the pocket fine. But if they are running, then they should be open to being tackled. Anyway, on to the coaching hire…I am just so sick of first time DC hires. Sure, I like Glenn as a former Jet and a very good one…I like what I hear of his leadership, and maybe that’ll be enough, but man oh man I just don’t understand how we keep doing the same fucking thing that gets us the same fucking results and no one wants to tell Woody he’s being a dumbass…he just has Brick and Hymie and whatever other Yes Men telling him he’s genius….just so utterly disgusting. Even if Glenn is a good leader, he’s going to need a great OC to develop the offense, and the better that OC, the more likely he’ll be hired away and you have to start the thing all over again. It’s fucking exhausting. Yes, I’ll hope for the best if it is Glenn, but I know how this movie ends…we’ve seen it time and time again with Herm, Mangini, Rex, Bowles, and Saleh. Some (Herm, Rex) had a bit more success than the rest, but in the end they all failed.
The whole thing is a crapshoot if they will be good but unlike the last regime have a plan, structure, organization and goals. The Saleh/Douglas era was just winging it and when adversity hit they showed peak weaknesses
100%. This is just so typical Jets. Temporarily placating nostalgic fans is more important to Woody than winning.
It's because the franchise is making money, which is the top priority. Once people start staying away in mass numbers and stop feeding money into the machine, then there will be changes to how the franchise operates. Until then, what has been going on with the franchise the past 15 years is
He could be great. I hope he will be great. But hiring Aaron Glenn is a mistake. Same old shit. Another first time HC coordinator who will come here, get his traditional five years of one interesting season followed by four god awful seasons and then we'll be having the same conversation again. Well run teams hire a General Manager, who in turn hires a HC. Well run teams hire a coach who has already had success as a coordinator and as a head coach somewhere else. Well run teams do not hire one year flash-in-the-pan coordinators because the media falls in love with them. The problem is obviously Woody ... but it is still the problem (and it is not going away).
I agree that having a FQB makes the odds of winning a SB forever better. My point, again. You can still win a Super Bowl without a FQB/Elite QB. Trent Dilfer, Brad Johnson, Nick Foles, Doug Williams, Jim McMahon, Mark Rypien... I'm sure I'm missing some. Still, it can be done. However, I agree, the odds are much harder without an elite QB at the wheel. Anyway, I've enjoyed the dialogue though. Thanks.
This is a very valid point. Very valid. I just want this team to win and I don't think any of us feel very confident that it's going to happen anytime soon. I'm mostly just coping I think.
That's the main reason for the turnaround. Daniels has been an unbelievable success for them, perhaps the best rookie QB season ever, but his season could have gone in many different ways if Snyder was still there. And, from watching an interview with Magic Johnson (with Josh Harris standing right beside him) from after the game, they have the right philosophy about how to run a team. "New vision, new owner with a strategy, picking the right people. First our coach, Coach Quinn, Adam Peters and then we all step out the way and let them do their job."
I doubt the Chilli Peppers write a song about Woody Johnson.... although there's some good lyric potential
ya over and over again and this time it’s not even a top hotshot defensive coordinator it’s a below average defensive coordinator. Atleast Bowles and saleh ran top defenses, what does Aaron Glenn bring to the table besides hype of being a ex jet? It’s all about selling tickets to woody if he cared about winning, McCarthy or Pete Carrol would be the coach right now, this buffoon never even made a phone call to McCarthy what a fuckn invisible, and you trust the process of hiring a 1st time coach to a buffoon who has failed hiring coaches ever since he bought this stupid franchise, common get real, it’s like your wife cheating on you and telling you I promise it will be different this time trust me.
that’s another thing if McCarthy came in here and sucked you can fire him in a year or 2, if Adam Glenn comes here it will be 5 years of exuses since there will also be a new franchise qb in place, you can’t fire a coach when the kid qb is still developing. This will be saleh all over again if not worse, this is just a demented hire because your committing to Aaron Glenn for 5 years like saleh even if the jets go 0–17 next year.
