You make a couple of great points and, as usual, the Jets are in a position of "need" across the board. Need a QB? Of course they do when this current crop of QB's is probably the worst in the last 5 years. Need a HC? Of course they do when the current crop of HC candidates is poor. This one requires special attention because, as many have pointed out, last year's crop of HC candidates was lead by Harbaugh who would have been about the ONLY guy I can think of who "might" be able to turn this nightmare around. Whether they could have signed him is irrelevant because the opportunity wasn't even explored. I don't need to re-hash what has been beaten ad nauseum. Need a GM? Of course they do, however this is the biggest wild card of all. GM'ing is one of those jobs where the incoming person is someone you "think" can do the job but you never know. Most GM's do not get a 2nd shot so the stats are hard to follow. This makes this a dangerous position solely based on the problems with obtaining/maintaining a HC and the proven wild card that is W. Johnson. Especially when it comes to personnel decisions. Always seems like the Jets are "shopping" for the wrong pieces at the wrong times. ESPECIALLY at the QB position. From the looks of it, all SIX of the QB's selected in the 1st round last year might turn out to be at least good if not better than average. The Jets could have taken a shot at least on 2 or 3 of them. Then again, why bother when they throw away QB's like Smith and Darnold. Granted, Smith was a bit ago but still. Darnold just chaps my ass. I know, I know...JD this, JD that...it's a pattern that's plagued this franchise for decades so JD my ass. This is going to be a VERY LONG offseason. Thankfully, I don't think this team is going to win their usual ole' "Offseason" awards in 2025...
Realistically, we might be looking at '27 before becoming relevant again. HC and GM in place, Rodgers retired (we hope), New QB learning from a quality mentor/OC. Defense rebuilt and last but not least, out of Cap hell.
Harbaugh would've been amazing but would never have come here - as I just posted elsewhere this is our biggest problem - Harbaugh went to the Chargers as they have a (potential) top 10 QB on the roster to build around - the Jets have nothing to offer an incoming coach other than the chance to roll the dice on a rookie but recent(ish) history would suggest that's unlikely to work out well.
You can thank the former HC for the poor CS and the results. It starts and stops there... and JD was as culpable as RS was because he allow a team that only consistency was penalitiesa and he did nothing to correct it...i.e., telling HC the fix the problem or else, remember JD loved RS, LOL. Tow peas in a pod.
The players are to blame for the penalties as well. For instance, the offside penalty that we had against Buffalo on Sunday. The DE is clearly lined up over the ball and is looking directly at it. That's on him, completely on him. Coaching is a huge part of it, yes, as that creates a culture where things either are or are not tolerated, but at the same time, these guys are getting paid millions of dollars to play a game. They should be able to figure out how not to line up offside, especially when they're looking directly at the object they are supposed to be lined up in front of.
