The franchise is already at that point. It's a noncompetitive entity that exists solely to make money. They haven't been a serious franchise in a long time and they're not going to be one at any point probably in my lifetime. This is just another example of it, constantly looking back to the "glory days" of almost making it to the big game or almost doing something great since the only good thing this franchise has done happened over a half century ago. The real thing to look for is the 30 For 30 that will be released in ten years about the 25th anniversary of the last time the Jets appeared in the playoffs.
Gotta reluctantly give some probs to Favre for being very magnanimous about the whole thing and saying nice things about Gastineau.
LOL at Gastineau thinking he would've gotten into the HOF by holding a single season sack record. The HOF doesn't induct guys who quit on their teammates midseason & then lie about the reason for doing so. If it was such a struggle for a guy like Joe Klecko, who was beloved by teammates & extremely well respected by opponents ----- then Mark G. doesn't have a chance.
Who can forget the 2023 HOF pregame ceremony watching Klecko being introduced …. I could feel the pain watching him limp out onto the field.
I had pretty much given up that Klecko was ever going to get in. I think what may have held that up was the insurance scam he was involved in years ago. Gastineau has been arrested three times. Once for assault at Studio 54, once for speed, and the third time for DV of his second wife. That last one, he spent over a year in jail for not fulfilling one of the conditions for avoiding prison. I think all of that added up keeps him out as well as being a shitty teammate. I doubt he's thrown a mercy induction regardless.
50+ years of fandom, 35 with season tickets attending about all of them with not very much to show for it. But, proud to say I was at all of the sack exchange games and enjoyed seeing THAT. I still tell NFL fans who didn't witness it how special it was. Both Klecko and Gastineau eclipsed 20 sack totals in the same season. It was crazy. We Jets fans couldn't wait for an obvious passing down on defense. Lynn Dickey just got sacked AGAIN. Unfortunately this franchise had that unique edge going for them in those years and couldn't capitalize. Same old story.
I watched it. It was just "OK". More of a human interest piece than an expose on the play of the sack exchange. A real focus on (previously unknown to me) personal life issues and backstories than may have shaped some of their personas. Damn them for being the reason I chose to be a Jets fan back in 1981-- its been nothing but 43 years of misery! And of course damn Don Shula once again for leaving the tarps off the Orange Bowl.
All I got out of that is that people are complicated. Everyone has their own views and recollections of the world they live in.
It was all before my time but why should Gastineau be black balled from the NFL? By all accounts and metrics he was the leagues best pass rusher for 3-4 years, and seems to have a high enough peak to the point where he should be considered. I’m sure a lot will disagree with me but it’s the hall of fame, not the hall of good teammates or nice guys.
Think Think these 30 for 30 shows aren't what they used to be? Certainly this one was meant to appeal to our market. The Favre ambush was probably the "aha" moment. Disclaimer - I have not watched it yet but intend to.
I really enjoyed it. I was lucky to be able to watch it with my dad who also enjoyed it. The only downside is reliving all the soul crushing losses from back then..
I tried watching it, maybe because it was late after a long day but I got bored and nearly fell asleep
the NFL is trying to avoid the ugly steroids debate that MLB has dealt with but I do agree with you for him to not even get any consideration by the HOF is stupid
I felt like they glossed over some years that would have made them more respectable. The 85 playoff season wasn't even mentioned.
I thought it was great. Very enjoyable watch. That’s the football that attracted me to the sport. Started playing as a kid in youth league while the Jets were in last year at Shea with the Sack Exchange. Had the SE poster in my room just like the documentary said lol. Even chose 99 as my jersey number. For those throwing shade at Gastineau, he was physically a beast and relentless as a pass rusher. I would say he should be in the HOF. in terms of being a Sack artist, excessively celebrating, and maybe even being a little selfish he was just way ahead of his time, as that is now todays NFL. He did kind of invent the Sack dance too I’ll give him that. Definitely worth a watch. It was a fun time as a fan. The football was better too. Way more physical. I should have got off the ship when they left Shea.
