Having a talented slot WR here wouldn’t move the needle for this org any more than it’s moving the needle for the Raiders. I’m happy to have what looks like a good LT for the future, but the real miss was Bo Nix. There were so many good QBs in this draft in general. There always are when we not looking, but there never seems to be when we are looking. Just keep drafting QBs till you get it right. Make them compete.
I watched the condensed game on NFL+ App (highly recommended by the way) so didn’t really dig in to watch Olu specifically, but I didn’t hear his name called which is good for an OL…if nothing else, I think he’s playing better than what we were getting from Tyron Smith that’s for sure I get Bowers is playing at a ridiculous level and in hindsight was the pick, but I’m still ok with an OT pick there as we knew we’d need him to start at some point this year, which we have needed, and he looks to be pretty good.
Olu playing well is nice but Brock is legitimately generational. Actually generational, not the version of generational that gets increasingly overused.
When I was looking at Brock Bowers at Georgia, I was seeing the next Kelce. And now that's what we're seeing in the NFL. I don't do anything football related for a living and I saw it. Joe could have had a solid swing tackle lined up without spending the 11th overall pick, he just needed to not be a moron. There is no argument for passing on a guy that will be top 3 at his position for probably a decade. There's nobody close to him and he's a rookie.
And JD didn't just pass on him, he didn't even consider him. I just can't get over it. It was so obvious Brock was going to be extremely good. Like blatantly obvious after watching 5 minutes of tape on him.
There isn’t a universe where Bowers doesn’t give you 50 catches/600 yards as a mid level tightend barring catastrophic injury. That was his floor. I don’t get how you pass on that floor.
Yeah, this was a monumental fuck up not to draft Brock. I am glad however that Olu looked like a brick wall today - no one came even close to winning against him based on what I saw. Certainly it is not going to make up for passing on truly generational talent, but at least he did not completely piss away the pick like he did many others. Speaking of which, Carter Warren looked pretty awful on the other side. Between him and Max that's two wasted picks on OL. If they weren't maybe he would have drafted Bowers. Oh well, we just need to hope the next one will not be as incompetent.
Well yeah. But. We’ll see lol. He had one OK game against a bottom tier pass rushing team so I’m not willing to say it wasn’t wasted yet. I sure hope it wasn’t though.
ranked 15th against the pass. Middle of the pack, not bottom tier. Leo bitch slapped us today btw. But Ole held his own, let’s not down play it too much.
It's not about Olu. It's about the fact that we passed on the probable offensive rookie of the year who is having the best rookie season of any TE ever. He's already the best TE in the league as a rookie. He's leading the entire league in receptions and he's 3rd in receiving yards (including WRs). It was an absolutely braindead decision to pass up on him.
Don’t disagree. I was all in for that move. I got trashed by this board. I did not mind Ole though. The real problem is Bower like any other receiver on this team would have underperformed. We are an embarrassment. Non the less he minimized Oles performance today. .
I hate to admit that I thought the Jets did the right thing by going OL instead of TE. I just thought it was way too high to draft a TE unless it was a true unicorn. Well, guess what? Bowers appears to be the next Travis Kelce. Just more salt in the wound in my worst season ever as a Jets fan.
I know its just a typo but there is something comical about a left tackle being called "Ole"... like a matador removing the flag so the bull can pass through
It’s not even just Warren and Mitchell, it’s Becton. The ramifications of poor drafting doesn’t only affect that position, it keeps you from drafting good players at other positions because you constantly have to correct previous poor choices. Think about it- Becton fails, we end up having to sign 3 different vet LT’s and draft Olu to cover for it. Denzel Mims forced us to draft Elijah Moore, who forced us to draft Corley. 2 failures and a question mark. Zach Wilson cost us immensely, ultimately pinning us into a corner to trade for a 40yo washed up QB for millions of dollars of cap space. We draft Jermaine Johnson who looked a little sketchy as a rookie, so we draft Will McDonald who also looked sketchy as a rookie, so we in turn have to insure those picks with Hassan Reddick. It goes on and on.
This is a really great point. There have been GREAT players available when the Jets had to draft for need over quality because of gaping holes on the roster. Probably no better example than the Wilson draft. We could have had our pick from a handful of perennial Pro-Bowlers - Chase, Sewell, Waddle, etc, etc. Douglas had the right idea of building through the trenches. He just constantly picked the WRONG guy.
For sure. The way I was thinking - how he could not address OL in 5 years, and with the ramifications of 2023 injury, not able to find a good OT in mid rounds after multiple tries, he almost left himself no choice but to draft OT to protect Rodgers. So finally he addressed OL after 6 years, but it came at a huge cost of a truly generational player. And this is just one example. I know it's hard not to think of what should have been, but at least it looks like we got ourselves a good LT for the new GM, so there is a little positive there to take away.
With the failed trick play this week, Penei Sewell, Lions OT, got sacked himself before he allowed a sack this season he is truly a dominant player
