I had to stop listening to any of the draft podcasts that have Spielman on it because he’s a complete fucking moron. Tannenham is also low IQ. It’s amazing how some of these guys get jobs. Another complete idiot imo is Lombardi. What a douche

Maybe this is really just Woody playing 4d chess here where the real underlying intention is to eliminate anybody they suggest from any actual consideration? Since the last thing this franchise needs is to quadruple down on more of their past loser mentality ideas/concepts.

I mean it's totally not that......but it's at least a good way to spin it in my head as try to make myself believe this is anything but a bad omen.

    This does not sound encouraging.

Why is he a moron? He seems like he was a pretty good NFL executive but I’ve never really listened to him or looked any further.

So I did a little research on Spielman, I guess he was good in the draft room but his FA were mostly duds.

He also was part of the Redskins process in their search for GM and HC. Hence why Jets are using him.

Already smells bad. Why do they need to select both the GM and the coach. That is exactly what best GMs would object to. Let the new GM make the pick. Bad start

Well at least Charley Casserly isn't assisting the search.

It sure beats letting Woody make the decision. And I don't want Rex back unless it's as DC.

The best friends that Woody has to call on around the league at this point are people who have just cause to actually hate him.

I'm really starting to appreciate the staggering levels of ineptitude here.

His results tell a different story. Hardly a moron and a long-time NFL executive with lots of success.

Spielman established himself as one of the league's better general managers during his 16-year tenure with the Vikings. From 2010 to 2019, 12.5% of The Minnesota Vikings draft selections made the Pro Bowl [11] which was fourth best in the league, and he was also NFL.com's 6th ranked GM in 2021.

We’re hiring a guy we fired previously as GM to hire a new GM. Yup, same ol Jets.

Reading comprehension is important. These guys are not going to select anyone; they have been hired to help in the decision making process - they will "aid in the process" of identifying and assessing candidates for the positions. Like it or not, the final decision will be up to the owners, no doubt with the assistance of others in the organization and other advisors. This is really no different than hiring some out of touch NFL relics or a headhunting firm as the Jets have done in the past.

The 33rd Team appears to be in a better position to identify those currently working in the league than those in the past and has insight into the existing Jets organization the others lacked. I proposed an evaluation group of Parcells, Carroll and Ryan for just those reasons although Carroll may still be looking to coach again but I think he's been settled on the West Coast for too long and Ryan would represent a conflict of interest with his own interest in returning. On the surface Tannenbaum and Spielman appear to be well situated to make well informed evaluations.

I have always believed the Johnsons are isolated from the inner core of NFL families and have no peers to lean on within the league's movers and shakers for good solid advice or even decent scuttlebutt. I think the most glaring example of this is the almost immediate hiring of Adam Gase when he was canned in Miami. If these owners were better connected with others around the country a couple of five minute phone calls should have changed their minds about that disastrous hire. Hopefully the assistance of 33rd Team can fill the gap it seems the Johnsons have been unable to alone - if they even recognize it.

All this really tells me is that after owning the team for 2.5 decades Woody has zero contacts in the league outside of x employees. I'm starting to not understand how doomed this team really is.

I don't get it. You want to hire a current GM to find a new one? Every GM or a HC you can find is someone who was fired. These who are not fired have jobs as people don't leave these jobs on their own. But these people who had success at GM position previously are the best one to identify the next best guy. Objectively Tanny and Spielman were successful GMs, plus Spielman helped Washington just last year, and that's exactly who we need to help Jets clueless owners.

Unfortunately these calls went to Peyton Manning. Though to be fair, Gase turned out better than Saleh. His 1st season out of 2 with the Jets was better than any one of 4 Saleh's one. Plus he even made play-offs with Miami. And we thought things could not get any worse after Gase.

He had two seasons 8-8 and 6-10 where he did not make plays offs, after conf finals two years before. Again, understand he is not hired to be a GM. If he were, I would be right there with you. But every previously successful GM or a HC you can get to assist your search has been fired at some point. You cannot get an active GM from another team to help you.

No, ge was fired because he was terrible at identifying talent. It was evident how dramatic the player make up was from Mangini to Rex. Tannenbaum was a bean counter that had a knack for managing money, but he was a terrible GM that listened way too much to his coaches. I don’t care how you look at it, hiring a guy you previously fired for doing a poor job to find a replacement is a terrible business model. Why don’t we call up Rob Saleh to interview our HC candidates while we’re at it. I mean, listening to and hiring candidates based on other unemployed football guys opinions really worked great for us so far, Casserly… Manning.
