The blueprint is there. Washington, Detroit, Niners, Texans. Get an experienced front office guy with a player personnel background and pair him up with an and up and coming proven hot coaching name like Ben Johnson as HC. That's the blueprint.

There's no need to make it more complex than what it needs to be.

DeMeco Ryans and Dan Campbell were not up and coming names. Campbell specifically was mocked tirelessly in the media. So I’m with Nagle on this - there isn’t really a single blueprint.

And for what it’s worth, the Jets hired their best candidate for GM since Parcells was here by getting Douglas. He sucked and it didn’t work but he had an extensive personnel background working for multiple organizations.

Borgonzi is next level as he was their head of scouting and head of player personnel before becoming the Asst Gm. He's also been there since the beginning with Andy Reid and built this dynasty alongside him and Veach. 16 years with the Chiefs speaks for itself.

Joe Douglas was a typical Jets hire. He worked with the Eagles and Ravens so people automatically assume he's some guru. Quite the contrary, he was one of the worst evaluators of talent that I've ever seen. Way too many of his picks inside and outside of the 1st round were fireable offenses. He also had no blueprint for how to build the team and was all over the place.

Enough about Joe Douglas. He was garbage.

I laid out my plan. Get Borgonzi and Ben Johnson and the Jets are in a vastly improved position right out the gate. These guys are integral parts of their organizations and are proven winners.

I know very little about the pool of GM candidates but Borgonzi sounds interesting.

Has he had offers in the past and just chosen to stay with the Chiefs?

I don’t agree with the bolded comment honestly. I think from a high level strategic standpoint, he did have a blueprint. His stated blueprint was to build the trenches on both OL and DL. He used high draft picks and multiple draft picks on both lines with Becton, Fashu, AVT, JJ, McD, etc. He used the 2nd overall on a QB. And he used other first rounders on impact positions at CB and WR.

So from a strategic standpoint, I do think he had a blueprint and I think he invested his high picks on the right positions. Get strong lines. Use high picks on important impact positions like QB, WR, CB. He didn’t waste high picks on non-critical positions like LB or S, like some our our previous fuckheads did using first round picks on Calvin Pryor and Jamal Adams.

So from the strategic standpoint, I actually liked his plan.

To me, his issue wasn’t so much the blueprint or the strategy but more so the actual players picked, so the tactics more than the strategy.

Zach was an AWFUL pick, and while I get that he was actually highly rated and most of the draft predictions did have him as the 2nd QB after Trevor, there were many of us on this site that weren’t fooled by that bullshit. He had one good year at BYU during COVID where his toughest competition was some bumfuck school called Coastal Carolina…come on. Many saw this as fools gold, and as a paid professional, he should have also seen that.

Choosing Becton over Wirfs I can understand…at the time I wanted Wirfs because Iowa seems to just breed great OL, but I at least understood him taking a natural LT with unusual size and potential (remember, Becton did not have an injury history in college). So I can give a pass on that one.

But then we get to the whiffs on 2nd round receivers, which is actually a Jets specialty. And there were plenty of whiffs throughout the draft but also some nice gets with late picks (Echols) and undrafted guys like Huff.

So it’s a mixed bag, as it is for ALL GM’s…none of them bat 1.000

I think this roster would be at least .500 and in the playoff hunt with decent coaching, but then he picked the coach too so he does carry some of that blame there.

All in all, his record sucks and he’s had 6 years…a lifetime in the NFL. We should be much better than we are by now.

So not saying he didn’t deserve to be fired…based on his record he certainly did.

But to me, he was better than Idzik and Mac by a country mile, and I have zero faith that Woody the fucking asshole village idiot will be able to do better. I fully expect Woody to fuck up the next GM hire like he’s fucked up every other key hire he’s made.

The New York Jets have exactly zero shot of getting Ben Johnson

I feel that way too…I think the top coaching candidates will have better options than the Jets. There is just such a stigma and history of ineptitude and losing and a meddling owner, that combined with the NY media, just doesn’t make the Jets an attractive option.

Sure, all HC openings are really there because the team sucked, but there is a lot of rot with this team.

The owner is clueless and I think coaches know it, and he meddles more than his background warrants
The QB situation is a mess…AR probably not back, no good options on the roster really and no great draft prospects this year

On the plus side, I don’t think we are a bare bones roster…there is young talent here to build around, and I think a good coach can probably figure out that our roster is underperforming due to lack of coaching and motivation more so than lack of talent. Not saying we don’t need help on stuff like OL, DT, etc., but for the most part, we are not bottom of the barrel here in my opinion.

But if we think about the potential openings, you have the Jets and Saints with confirmed openings already, and there are a few other teams that I could see potentially firing their current HCs (Raiders, Jaguars, Browns, Bears, maybe Cowboys or Giants)…may be a bloody Black Monday. Of those teams, the Raiders and Browns are kind of at our level of disfunction but teams like the Jaguars at least have a QB that may be attractive to a guy like Johnson. The Cowboys can be a shit show too but hey, they’re the Cowboys and that has a lot of appeal. The Giants also have more cache than we do. The Bears maybe.

I don’t know, if I were a coach looking for my first gig, I’m not sure the Jets are where I’d stake my career reputation.

The Jets have showed the league a blue print of how not to build a team.

    I hope not!
I hope not! Just because Curtis is a good football player does not mean he will be good in an advisory role

Curtis Martin allegedly is interested in becoming an NFL team owner. Paul Edson Jr. of Heavy.com wrote an article detailing the similar thoughts of two New York sports analysts.

Former NY Daily News Football beat writer Gary Murphy speculated "the Johnson's should sell Martin a small piece of the team and have him step in as President of Operations. Martin is extremely well connected and is part of Roger Goodell's inner circle..."

SNY, NBC analyst Badlands podcast host Connor Rogers relayed similar thoughts saying the Jets need a "Czar of Football operations."

If nothing else I think it's a great idea to bring in an esteemed Football professional like Curtis Martin who would immediately give the Jets some respect.

Perhaps Martin's presence would persuade some strong GM candidates who might otherwise be fearful of the wasteland that 1 Jets Drive.

I mean, he couldn't do any worse, could he?

Then again, it could turn out like the front office version of the Aaron Rodgers debacle.

At this point, we should just embrace the clownshow. It's never getting better folks, just embrace it.

This entire storyline smells of a high school essay. We have long discussed here the value of hiring someone to head up all the football operations, that is nothing new but what makes Curtis Martin uniquely qualified for the position? He is a former "esteemed" football player but I cannot find anything that indicates he has any significant business talents or experience that would translate to such a leadership position. How friendly he is with the commissioner is irrelevant, as is the idea gifted "respect" would be of value. The only respect that matters is earned not handed over to pals.

If the Jets finally decide to staff such a position the candidates must be people who have earned their stripes by putting in decades of work in the office, not simply running around a playing field. The idea that an ownership share would be awarded, or even sold to such an employee at hiring is simply bizarre and I do not believe has precedent in the NFL.

We all understand our Woody problem. What we dont understand is how to succeed with it. People keep thinking we need some tenured and hardcore football man to save us. That doesn't work with the Woody problem. What we need is an outside maverick. Curtis would be better than Borganzi due to the nature of our organization.

Good outside the box thoughts as usual. I sort of like this thought process. It’s also not like Curtis Martin would be choosing the players, he’d be choosing the team that chooses the players.

Borganzi gives me a great deal of pause anyways. He works in an organization with an all time great coach AND quarterback coupled with a guy who is probably one of the best defensive coordinators in the sport.

I can’t remember a time even in the Eagles days when Andy Reid had a bad offensive line or wasn’t able to scheme around a weakness. Is that because he’s had great offensive lineman his entire career? Maybe he has but that says more about him than talent evaluation. He’s also always had the same type of defensive coordinator - man blitzers.

A former player is perfect for that role here.

A famous former player as team president serves as the intermediary, he allows Woody to “talk football” at dinner parties and fanboy out, whilst keeping him away from daily operations.

He has the gravitas to take woody aside and tell him for example we don’t make social media based decisions, where as a front office nerd doesn’t have that

Nah. Hire an old re-tread like Mike McCarthy then sign a bunch of big name over the hill FA's in the offseason. Why change now?
