Some will argue that Douglas wasn't responsible for this terrible team, but it was bad coaching instead. Well, who hired the coaches? Douglas.
Let's see now, Woody's boss, the President-elect just made some interesting hires, so Woody, in admiration. needs to follow a similar path... I KNOW WHO THE NEXT GM WILL BE Pat McAfee
So what does this really mean? 1. Does it mean Woody is doubling down on Rodgers? 2. Obviously, firing an HC and GM during the season is a horrible look. As already pointed out, no candidate worth his salt will come anywhere near the Jets. 3. Is there any announcement of who will take over the GM duties? 4. The classy move would have been to let Douglas walk away at the end of the year. What's to be gained by firing him mid-season?
11 months late. A lot of crappy GMs can claim to have failed to build a winner, but Joe Douglass may be one of the few who has shown the ability build a team that can neither win now nor rebuild effectively. It'd be difficult to do much worse than JD did over his tenure with the Jets.
Nah it was clear Douglas was working for his next job and not his current job. Fuck him, you gotta cut a guy loose in that situation
Does that even work or gel with a mid season firing though? Like making this firing now isn't really suggesting to me that is actually going to happen. At least to the extent we'd want it to, and/or unless I'm just completely wrong in my assumption that we can't be tampering with currently employed guys until the offseason. IDK, currently this smells more like a circling the wagons around Aaron effort to me. Especially after speculative talk on whether the team would want him back in 2025 have really started to heat up to a boil over the last week or so.
Becton was a bust, it's how the whole debacle started, they have been trying to cover up the wasted 1st round draft pick that Joe D used ever since and the offensive line still stinks. Wasting a high 1st round pick for 1 season of fair play for a offensive lineman who was supposed to be a sure pick and on this team for decades is not a good pick. The guy ate himself out of a job.
Once the word got out that JD had opened a backchannel to the Ravens and was looking at properties in the Balt. area, Woody had no choice but to fire him. Press the autopilot and let the Jets just play out the string. Then get Aaron Rodgers OUT OF THE FCKN BLDG!!
Listening to ESPN and it's almost as if the Jets fired Santa Claus. Joe Douglas is a hero for most of the fan base I guess.
He made some moves that looked great at the time and never panned out. I do believe with a better coaching staff a lot of those moves would have panned out. But... he's also gotta take responsibility for those awful coaching staffs. We should have known we were fucked when his first order of business was taking Becton over CeeDee Lamb. And he goes out the same way he came in... Olu over Bowers.
Mofo is like Al Bundy living of 1 decent draft 30 years ago while he failed in life and became a shoe salesman or in Joe Douglases case a snake oil salesman.
DMW, I hope you're right, but I'd feel a lot better if there was a corresponding announcement that Rodgers is being benched. Until Rodgers is riding the pines, I will still suspect that Woody, the star-fucker, is still under Rodgers' spell.
Wow ok so this is a bit of a surprise given that his contract was expiring anyway, but maybe all that Baltimore talk is the driver? Also agree that the most certain course to get Woody to do anything is embarrassment, but the problem is Woody has NO idea what to do…he just fires people and then I think it’s a better than 50/50 proposition that the next GM is even worse than JD. For my take, JD’s record is horrendous and he deserved to be fired after 6 years, but I still maintain he was better than Idzik and Mac. And I have such little faith that the next GM will be the right guy. Woody will fuck it up like he has every single time before. I am looking forward though to a complete housecleaning…these coaches ALL need to go.
Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) on X Jets have named former Browns general manager Phil Savage as their interim general manager.
I don't disagree with the fact that giving us more time is beneficial, but this just seems like another knee-jerk reaction to me. If it works out well, it will be because he stepped in it, not because he was strategic enough to plan it out. He's an impulsive moron.
The story about Douglas buying a home in the Baltimore area in preparation for his job with the Ravens was probably true. Woody got wind of it and fired him. Means Douglas really was asleep at the wheel.
