Between this forum and Facebook there is a ton of rocks being thrown at Aaron Rodgers for not putting on a red cape and winning all of the games single handedly. I also see a lot of talk about the skill guys. What I have not seen is much discussion about the specific players that form our offensive line. Currently our starting Center Joe Tippman, one of our starting guards, AVT, and our swing tackle Olu are all first round picks taken by Joe Douglas within a fairly short period of time. Our other three starters all played for playoff teams last year. I certainly didn't expect our offense to struggle with a somewhat healthy Aaron Rodgers. Even with Alan Lazard playing better than I expected we still suck. What is the problem with our offensive line and more importantly, who (if anyone) is doing a good job?
No idea. I find it crazy to spend a first round, top 15 pick, on someone and not play them. I think part of it is coaching, players hate Kieth Carter. And part of it is we can't run the ball. I think a reason is rogers is not a threat to run so teams can shoot gaps quicker. It's a young mans game, the QB has to be nimble.
It's wild that we are still here talking about terrible Jets O-Line play. Every year they try to fix it and every single year they fail.
The thing I notice (and I can be wrong, im just an arm-chair coach) is that they cant seem to identify or pick up a blitz. I put that solely on coaching, most likely Carter
The OL issues stem mostly from being a garbage man block unit in the run. They are decent in zone blocking. It was an OL built to pass the ball with our “superstar” QB. but that QB is a shell of himself both physically but also in his mental acuity as evidenced by the endless delay of game penalties. Additionally, Tyron Smith is a has been never was. Yes he was a great player but him being on the Cowboys overrated his status. And now hes an old version of that and is mostly terrible.
Speed rushing Smith is almost a guaranteed sack/pressure/QB hit a few times a game. The guy looks like he’s moving in slow motion sometimes.
I'll be the first to call the O-line for being shit this year in the run game and pass protection.... but... With Heyward, Highsmith and Watt... that's a formidable front and they only allowed 1 sack. This game was lost because the Jets D never realized Pitt has 1 receiver and that Wilson takes shots down the field. Double Pickens and they don't allow the completions or PI penalties and the game is much closer. Rodgers looks like he's turned into a Pennington noodle arm. If he actually has the arm strength and tries to work with receivers instead of just tossing the ball and blaming them this could have been a great game all game long. His stupid int before the half when that pass wasn't needed started the collapse. Oh... I'll add this.. if 2008 Brett Favre was our QB (pre-shoulder injury) this team would be 6-1 right now. That's how bad Rodgers has been.
Tippman had trouble snapping the ball in training camp but he was lined up across from Quinnen Williams so it was hard to tell. I think most of the weakness on the offensive line is from the free agents. Tynion Smith at LT is not what he once was. The guard Simpson seems to make the most penalties. Not sure if Morgan Moses is doing all that good or bad but he has already missed at least one game. If the three guys we took in the first round work out I suppose the future could be bright for the OL but right now it looks bad and I am a bit confused about who is to blame.
Tippman is not a quality center and that is the main issue. He cant identify blitzes and cant run block or drive block. A strong center is the core of the offense. Other than that, AVT cant stay healthy and is committing a lot of penalties, Smith and Moses are on their last year as first string. We don't have any quality depth. They seem to have little faith in Olu, so we are a tackle injury away from total disaster.
Tippman sucks and isn’t a starting NFL center. It still to this day pisses me the fuck off that we didn’t take Tyler Biadasz in 2020. We took a tackle no one’s ever heard of from a bottom tier D1 school and a running back with top upside of being a decent kick returner and 3rd down back (neither of which happened). We had another shot at him in free agency and were too busy dismantling our defensive line and signing/trading for 30+ year old washed offensive lineman and receivers.
You can never draft too many RB...we took 3 of them in the last 2 years despite having Breece. If we didn't take the YAC king, Brandon Coleman, Caedan Wallace and Cooper Beebe were all there in R3.
Fashanu was playing guard last night and did okay in comparison to Max Miller who should be a forklift driver or something. Dude sucks. And Tippmann is lost most of the time.
I didn't see that game, was that Olu's first game and do we think that was a huge difference maker in terms of the offense having a little more success?
Tippman is trash. Riding the wave with him simply because we took him high is GM malpractice. Whatever happens next year, we need a new center. Tyron Smith is also absolutely washed. He shouldn’t continue to play. He doesn’t even look like he has a fucking chance in his low crouched no leg back position in obvious passing downs. Put Fashanu over there. Moses is fine. Fashanu was fine at OG.
