According to ESPN, Carter signed a 3 year $30.75 million deal....I can't link the article for some reason
https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/41113317/michael-carter-ii-agrees-extension-new-york-jets He’s quietly reliable and durable. I think it’s a great move.
Probably JDs best draft pick when you consider where he was taken. He's regarded as one of, if not the best, slot CB in the NFL. Tremendous pick and great signing.
Like locking him up; concerned about the price/precedent. Looks to be a lot of young talent to lock up in the next couple of years. A better problem to have than no talent worth a second contract for sure, but can the FO also afford to pay Sauce record CB money, GW record WR money, etc.?
He overplayed his contract so deservedly gets the reward. Hope that is the message that resonates with the players.
Its great to see a draft pick get a second contract. We've let way to many walk after their rookie deal.
I thought it would’ve been a good move to give him a shot at playing the other outside corner spot and moving on from DJ Reed who did get torched a bit last year. He’s damn good.
That very well could be under consideration for next year. Speaking about CB's, I recall hearing some talk about Sauce following the #1 WR--I guess we'll find out soon enough but have you heard anything definitive lately?
The glaring lack of a DJ Reed extension leads me to believe this might be part of the plan. At the very least it's a backup plan. I think DJ will be back though, he's got a $4.5 mil cap hit because of void years. You might as well bring him back if you're gonna be paying a quarter of his salary anyway.
Still have Echols who is also up for a contract who can play inside and outside, and is excellent at specials. Stiggers looks good too. JD’s best position group has easily been CBs, which ironically is a hard position to find. no other position group is close in terms of draft picks and FA decisions. We even lost UDFA Bartholomew to waivers on the 53 cut who looked like a future keeper too. I think Reed likely gone at end of year as a cap casualty unfortunately.
I like the thought of Carter going back outside, and resigning Echols for Nickel and specials, while also being outside corner depth. What is the structure of Reeds current remaining deal? I looked it up but didn’t really understand it with the Void years. At a certain point maybe you just keep him I agree. But it’s probably him or Echols, and Echols is younger and good on specials.
DJ Reed is done after 2024 unless Joe restructures him to chip away at his 15.6mil cap hit for this year, or gives him an entirely new deal. I would consider him a prime candidate for restructure if they decide to sign Reddick or trade for Adams.
