You guys ever get a look / hold of this rod?
Looking for a spinning rod to ship to my brother's in NY for tossing lures to tuna, and for this price it seems sweet (trying to keep the budget down as it'll prob only get used a few times a year tops)... 7-0 heavy HRX70HS (I'll bring a reel with me on the plane... Quantum Cabo 80)

I think that’s a great Rod. I have 4 Tiagras some with and some without the bent guides. I use them for Bluefin and Tiles.

    Thanks.

I havent had the best luck picking out rods without holding in my hand first.

So you think I should go "Heavy" over "Medium Heavy"? Specs lean me towards MH, but I know they often over state these things... I tried to contact them about the actual weights but 3 days later, no response.

Planning on pairing with a Quantum Cabo 80 w/ 65lb suffix braid. Figured it could be versatile enough for plugs and jigs if needed...

    Thanks.
Yeah, my buddy has a couple, they're pretty nice. I have a "Boca" 50... basically the eco version of that reel (I think it has one less bearing, so a lil less drag). But it's hard to beat the power of those Cabos for the $..

Just got back from Newburyport MA. Was fishing Jeffreys Ledge for Pollock/Haddock/Cusk since Cod are off limits until September. Pollock weren't biting but the Haddock more than made up for it. 2 day count: 40 Haddock, 3 giant Cusks and 1 Pollock. Had to throw back 4 of the prettiest Cod I've ever seen. Will be giving fish away again as my freezers are full.

3 weeks until my next offshore trip. Last trip was challenging as we had tough current conditions and had to use 5lb lead and sometimes heavier.

Thats a good trip! Love Haddock! Make that Livornese style with linguini.

    Going fluking again today.

Offshore weather sucks. Need someone to kill the fan. I am in a trolling tournament until July 15 so fingers crossed. Need to get to the Hudson.

By the way, you guys know anything about pulling a dredge to target tuna?

I know they are essential for billfish but is there one that attracts tuna?

Interesting... I've been toying with the same idea.
When I was stuck home with covid a couple of years ago, I made myself a mini ghetto fabulous "dredge" of sorts... 4oz weighted sea striker 9 bait spreader / dredge and I rigged it with large 8" swim baits I got off Ebay that look like pogies (Bunkah to you guys ;)) w/ 100lb mono on snap swivels so I can take it apart.
I pull it with my downrigger (sans weight) when slow trolling live baits and it works like a champ.... pull the one live one about 10-20' behind it.

I considered bringing it up to NY and trying the same thing for Bluefins... slow trolling livebaits instead of just letting them drift around...

So I pulled the trigger on a dredge from All Tackle out of MD. Spoke to the owner who said they supply all the White Marlin Open boats with their dredges.

I wasn’t impressed by what I got because it is assembled with strips of Mylar with silver ballyhoo stickers. I am told this is what they use in that tournament. A buddy who fishes it said they work great until a pissed off Mako has its way with it.

Anyway didn’t get to deploy it last trip because we were too busy bailing tunas! Had 2 Wolfpacks total 9 yellowfins 2 big eyes. Even stopped for 8 Golden Tiles on the way home.

Fluking still is a struggle had a trip Sunday 2 keeps for 60. Went to the rocks lost 6 rigs.

Hoping to get out Sunday. Have a trolling tournament. Forecast looking shitty right now.

Just got a report Yellowfins heavy in the AP. Nice Allison caught.

NICE! Yeah, they don't look like shit out of the water (especially given the cost) but apparently work (although I just know billfish guys that pull them)

How far offshore you get those tunas?

I hear you. Love the competition these tournaments create but crowded fishing grounds and throwing calcutta money to a guy with the winner already in his bait well bums me out.

We caught the Tuna at the Hudson Canyon 96 miles out at a place called to 100 square.

If we get to deploy the dredge I will run a couple Joe Shute rigged Ballys behind it.

Yeah, except it's not a tournament..... SAFMC gave us literally ONE day to legally harvest red snapper. (They're fucking everywhere)... and every johnny jerkoff with a fishing rod is going to try and find one. Hoping for some T-storms ;)

Headed out Thursday for a 3 day long range deep drop trip. Had a malfunctioning swivel tip on my last trip but that's getting replaced tomorrow with a heavy duty AFTCO swivel tip. Got plenty of pre-tied 80# test rigs. Bringing 20lbs of lead just in case as the upcharge for sinkers on head boats is criminal. We'll be headed south so I guess we'll be off the Carolinas. Bringing a spinner too just in case some Mahi pass thru.

    Tight Lines!!
