Trying to get a list of the best war movies together. Which movies do you think should be on the list. I know there's a ton of really good ones

    Just to start:

    Saving Private Ryan
    Apocalypse Now
    Dunkirk

    Hacksaw Ridge
    Bridge Too Far
    Thin Red Line

    Deer Hunter?

I put a question mark next to The Deer Hunter because it didn’t all take place in the setting of war, but the post war trauma that was included in movie was very raw, and real.

Three movies from 1970. First, the strangest, and probably best, double feature I ever saw:

    M*A*S*H
    Patton

    Also,

    Catch-22

I do have to put in the caveat that I am referring to the impact of these movies when they came out. In very different ways, none have aged as well as they might have (especially M*A*S*H and Catch-22), but at the time they were absolutely groundbreaking.

Also, three great prisoner of war movies: Stalag 17, The Bridge on the River Kwai, and The Great Escape.

One really good one on Netflix I forgot:

    Beasts of No Nation -

about a child soldier in an African civil war.
It's not condescending toward the protagonists or towards Africans, like some movies on this are.
Really great battle scenes as well.

I know this thread is more about the movie production / creative & entertainment value, but asking my old man about Vietnam movies (since there were ALOT) he said there was once realistic one:

Full Metal Jacket (basically said "that's how it was").... and a runner up was Apocalypse Now (which was surprising based on how crazy (great movie) it was)

When I asked about Platoon, based on the accolades it received.... he said not even close.

Although these days he wouldnt watch any of it, and I think thats a good thing...
