Like others have said, It's simple... As long as this staff/HC Is here, this will be the trend. This team Is very scheme orientated to the point where the defense will ALWAYS be the priority for this staff. This team will live and die by the defense. In their minds. Saleh Is VERY good at running the scheme that was created, envisioned, and molded by others around him. He mastered those concepts. To his credit, he has done that. . The problem Is that he Isn't the creator who can envision his own concepts and adaptations. He Is limited and confined by this scheme. For that reason, unless he learns to step outside of those comfort zones, we will always see the same trends In this regard.
I think this slogan has some merit in the short run, like for a playoff or championship game. It always seems, in critical games, the team that "brings it" on defense wins the game. For an entire season though, agree, don't think it's possible any more. Second thought edit: substitute "often" for "always."
Saleh gained his reputation as a good DC based on the defensive production in SanFran, but even he said a monkey could run his defense. It relies heavily on top notch pass rushers and pass defenders, run defense be damned. Lose any of those pieces and they're screwed. Now it seems as though JD is taking the same approach with offense. Bring in the best tackles you can sign, add a proven receiver, and make the offense "idiot proof" so Saleh/Hackett can't screw it up.
SF's overall defensive rankings have improved since Saleh left. And that includes absorbing 3 firsts on a bust QB.
Yes, but at the time he left he had already built his reputation. He solidified it with the Jets defense, but we've seen what it would look like without high end pieces in his first season. Ever wonder what Rex, or another real defensive mind could do with these guys?
This times a million. Saleh is a terrible HC and is over rated asf as a DC. We will never win anything with Mr. Clean and his 1 million light year wide ego, you could have every HOF d player on this team, it wouldn't matter.
Rex couldn't do anything with them. We saw what Rex had, and the NFL saw, and once they learned his couple of tricks, he had nothing. He still has nothing.
Yes, it's not that a good defense isn't needed. It is, especially for the playoffs. But the Jets have focused so heavily on defense that they never have enough offense to get to the playoffs, let alone win playoff games. The NFL is focused on point production, not point prevention, and has been since the dawn of the 21st century. It's maddening. Here's a test: when was the last time you remember watching a Jets game where they needed to score and confidently thinking, "Okay. There's enough time, we're going to score"? It's pathetic. Given all of that, I'd much prefer they go overboard on acquiring offensive talent even if the defense suffers. It's long overdue.
You missed the point. The point was what could a real defensive guru do with this defense? Love him or hate him, Rex was a unique defensive mind for his time. That time passed, but his use of blitz packages/man coverage was the polar opposite of Saleh's defense. How many times last season were we screaming for Sauce to be played man up on WR 1?
I agree with your point regarding Saleh vs a real defensive guru and how we were clamoring for Sauce to be played man up on WR1.
This stiff better win or he should be fired if losses mount immediately and have DC become intermin coach.
I've said this before. The players perform well in this system. There have been multiple Jets defenders that have improved substantially since they joined the Jets. You have to consider that a characteristic of the system and the coaching.
As I've stated before, the defense is really the last unit, on the team, that I'm worried about. The NY Jets entire season depends upon whether or not the Offense can effectively put up 21 PPG. That's exactly .2 PPG more than the defense gave up last year. If this Offense can somehow find a way to hit that 3 TD number then they should win more than they lose. It's a herculean ask though. The defense averaged surrendering 15.8 PPG in 2023 which means they need to squeeze almost a full TD a game out of a unit that remains largely unchanged at the skill positions. (for now pre-draft) I don't know how they are going to do it.
Relatively speaking vs last 10 seasons 2024 has a more balanced Offence/Defense jets squad Far from perfect …but the OL is starting to be restored and talented players all around AR We have to get lucky ..Because Now we will witness the CS shitting this bed..Saleh and his decision making the difference between win losing close games
