No,I think a good running game makes Chad more successful. wiseass. I think we need a better back to go along with Leon. But we do need more OL
Agreed. How one can sit hear and argue that Chad P kills our passing game when a few years ago we lead the league in rushing is astonishing. What is the difference between this jets team and the jets team that led the league in rushing....it certainly isn't Chad P, he's still dinking and dunking all over the place. Rb and OLINE are certainly different though, and those are the positions that need to be addressed in the off-season, instead of starting a completely unproven qb just b/c he can throw a deep out. Our LT was probably 280 lbs in the playoffs, and our RG, while serviceable, isn't the mauler we need. Address the Oline first, draft/sign a RB if the right deal comes around, and make sure Dbrick and Mangold get bigger/stronger over the off-season. That is how we improve our running game. I think Leon and Cedric make a great combo, so lets not make any desperation deals to add a rb. If SD is willing to deal Turner or if a back like Lynch falls to us...well, I can't complain about adding players like that to our roster.
Thanks for the good laugh this morning that post was funny, but yeah as many before me have pointed out look at Curtis Martin. Next time think a tad more before you make a post like that becuase Curtis Martin clearly blows what point you thought you may have had.
It looks to me like we scored the exact same amount of rushing TD and passing TD's in 06 as we did in 04. What we did have in 04 was significantly more attempts rushing the ball and less passing the ball. The reason we ran the ball so much more effectively in 04 even though we did face 8 in the box because of Chad's arm is we very rarely sent out more than 2 WR and had not only one of the best run blocking TE in the league who rarely went out to catch passes but we also had a great lead blocker in Sowell. Effectively we ran the ball well because we had the personal and kept in the personal to handle 8 in the box. It's a lot more difficult to do that when you're running 3 WR sets with no fullback, or your sending your TE who is better at catching the ball than blocking out into patterns. I don't think our running the ball effectively in 94 proved anything more than with an offense designed to run the ball against a defense looking to stop the run you can run the ball. The question is if you want to run 3 WR sets and use your TE as a recieving threat can you run the ball with a stacked box? Maybe with a great RB and a much better OL or maybe with a QB with a quick relese who makes the D cover more real estate across the field and deep? If you had both you could sure put alot of pressure on a Defense which is really what good Offensive teams need to do to beat good defensive teams. It's not a coincidence that Martin had a significantly higher yard per carry in 04 than any other year he was in the league. He had an O designed specifically to match up with a stacked box.
I, like most who replied, don't agree with your theory as well and also am under the belief that with a better O-line (not necessarily RB) to open holes for the running game, CP will play even better. I would really love to pick up a huge LG (via FA rather than draft rook) to help D-Brick with the rushing attack (in case he is still "light" and has difficulty in that part of his game). And I also agree with whoever said, "resign Clement". I think he did a good job this year considering he was a backup. u can prolly sign him cheap. IMO, Moore might be on his last leg as a starting RG. he'll be a serviceable backup for both G positions
Nope, it's the lack of a feature back. You'll most likely realize this when we draft or sign a free agent feature back this off season. Trust me on this one tonto.
The wieght of the line / road graters has no affect on the teams ability to run the ball... case in point, 2 of the better rushing attacks in the league... The Atlanta Falcons and the Denver Broncos... it's blocking scheme more than anything... Both lines are light and athletic, and put out 1200 yard rushers like it's no bodies buisness.. especially the Broncos. Ellis
I agree with Ellis-92. From what I've heard about the Gibbs system, he likes smaller, quicker linemen who can make the trap blocks and pulls that are necessary and can get to the second level quickly. Look at the Denver line in particular, no one is over 310, I don't think. I think some of our O-line can do that, but not all of them. Moore in particular has not been too good at pulling, and neither has Clement. Maybe they can get better with coaching, but right now it's a weakness.
As long as we have BB in our division we are going to have to get bigger. They will over power us with light lineman, that's their MO. Give me the Hogs any day over the zone blocking finese guys.
Here is the REAL reason our running game stinks. We have no guards that are any good. We need a road grater guard who can hold his own pass blocking and maul people in the running game. I still think we need better back(s) as well, but without a better o-line, it really won't matter much.
This would be the best thing we could do. Denver has suffered after his departure and Atlanta will too. Kind of like a Wethoff guy only with the o-line.
My guess is that Mangini will try to get the FO to go after this guy. Remember he said when looking for an OC he liked shotty because that offense always gave NE troubles. Well, Denver seems to give them trouble too - hopefully we can hire this guy.
I think either kind could be effective. The problem is I'm not sure what would work best for the guys we have now. D'Brick and Kendall can pull and are fairly mobile. Mangold isn't that bad either. Clement and Moore are not good at pulling and are not that mobile. We need to pick a philosophy and get the guys that fit. Maybe I missed them, but toward the end of the season, we definitely ran fewer sweeps and stretch plays. I was surprised we didn't try more outside runs against NE. Instead we seemed to run a lot of inside runs, interior traps, and off tackle runs, with little success, because NE was bigger than we were at the point of attack. I think we do need to get bigger on the o-line if that's the kind of running game we want to have.
Thats a big reason denny green got fired. Because he likes big olinemen who struggled. The league is changing, and aside from the pats, d-linemen are getting smaller and more athletic. As well as the olinemen.
There are way to many holes in this theory. Teams with QB's who can make all the throws have had less of a running game that we did this year. Eventhough Chad does not throw the ball with a ton of zip, defenses still have to respect the pass. Also, with the aid of the running game, Chad can go Play action like he did with Martin in 02 and 04 and was successful. Also, not sure if this was menitioned, but Martin led the league in rushing with Chad at the helm. Your way off base, the bottom line to me is, Chad was good this year, and will only benefit from a feature back for defenses to key on. He is the most winningest QB in Jets history and people want to get rid of him, I do not get it.
Great point. Ferguson and Mangold are gonna be the core of our OL for the next 10 years or so, and both are finesse style linemen. Alot of teams are getting away from the bigger less athletic linemen, as these players tend to struggle w/ the speed the modern d-lineman offers. This was true in places like AZ and even Pittsburgh, where offenses struggled overall due to an overindulgence of size/bulk and a lack of quickness to reach the 2nd level, quickness off the snap and filling gaps for pass protection. Need further proof? 3 straight drafts, highly touted "oversized" O-lineman have slipped significantly from their percieved final draft grade. It started w/ Shawn Andrews who fell to 15 overall from his top 10 grade, continued w/ Elton Brown(who is now playing w/ AZ by the way) and last year MJ Giles. Teams are simply getting away from these type of players. Part of it is due to what is mentioned above about the struggle w/ speed rushers. But additionally it is due to the lack of weight control a coaching staff has w/ these types. They tend to routinely be out of shape and rarely have their weight under control as a result. The Leonard Davis, Mike Williams and Vernon Carey's of the world have scared teams away from these types. W/ that said, I believe a team needs one guy w/ some above average size and strength in order to anchor the running game. We had that w/ Kareem McKenzie and have sorely missed it since. Perhaps a player like Justin Blalock at RG or Levi Brown at RT from the upcoming draft would go a long way in improving our offense overall.
I don't know, I'm just not sold on Houston. Leon is great, and maybe Houston will be really good also, but I just need to see him do some more before I'd be convinced that he can be one of the 2 feature backs.
http://www.denverbroncos.com/page.php?id=334&storyID=1903 Broncos line has always been undersized, just like the Jets. However, he makes more money than the HC of the NYJ or any of their coordinators and Woody Johnson has always paid his coaches far below NFL salaries... He also has a new house he built in Pheonix Arizona, The Cardinals have a new HC, an awful offensive line and they are looking for an offensive line coach.
