It's not every day someone attempts 38 passes and only gets 179 yards. For the folks in the back, that's 4.7 yards per attempt, which would rank Boyle 28th out of 28 qualified passers on the year...wooof that's awful.

Needed a little extra time to convince myself to do this but as I've said before, mama didn't raise no quitter.

As painful as this may be, let's get into it...(link to every throw from Boyle here)

    1st Quarter:
13:50, 3rd & 2: 11 personnel, trips bunch left. Boyle goes hard count and gets Miami to jump but also hits Brownlee on a speed out from the outside of the bunch for the first. Offsides negates the play but good throw.

13:31, 1st & 10: 11 personnel, WR twins left. Brownlee comes in motion behind Ruckert. PA boot right. Boyle throws a bit too high for Ruckert. He's got Phillips in his face but he's gotta hit that. (0-1)

12:50, 3rd & 12: 11 personnel, empty set, trips left. Boyle throws the ball to GW on an out about 8 yards short of the sticks. Why this was the play call on 3rd & 12, I'll never know. Gain of 5. (1-2, 5 yards)

6:33, 1st & 10: 21 personnel, I-form, TE right. Browlee comes in motion to condense the split. PA pass. Leave it to our genius OC to leave Ruckert on an island against one of the best pass rushers in the league (Jaelan Phillips). He, of course, gets smoked and allows pressure on Boyle. Should've been a safety tbh. Luckily for us, it wasn't, incomplete. (1-3, 5 yards)

5:51, 3rd & 10: 11 personnel, empty set, trips left. Boyle hits Conklin on a chip and release in the left flat and it almost works. Gain of 8. It would be wild if we attempted a pass beyond the line to gain just once on 3rd down. (2-4, 13 yards)

0:50, 2nd & 15: 11 personnel, trips right. Conklin goes in motion to create a 2x2 look. Boyle hits GW on a sit down in the zone for a gain of 5. (3-5, 18 yards)

    2nd Quarter:
15:00, 3rd & 15: 11 personnel, trips right. Dolphins simulate pressure but only bring 4. Boyle checks it down to Breece on the left flat for a loss of 2. (4-6, 16 yards)

7:48, 1st & 10: 12 personnel, TE twins left. GW goes in motion left to right and stacks up behind Brownlee. Bad snap causes Boyle to be late on the smoke throw to GW, Phillips gets in the throwing lane and tips the ball up. Almost picked but falls incomplete. (4-7, 16 yards)

7:37, 2nd & 10: 21 personnel. Bawden split out wide right is certainly a decision. Boyle hits Breece in the right flat for a gain of 7. (5-8, 23 yards)

6:58, 3rd & 3: 11 personnel, trips bunch left. Nothing doing for Boyle, Wilkins gets the sack as he beats Newman across his face. Bad. (5-8, 23 yards)

2:17, 1st & 15: 12 personnel, trips left. Brownlee runs a slant from the left side of the formation and Boyle hits him. Good concept to have GW clear out the defender in that area. Gain of 12. (6-9, 35 yards)

1:20, 3rd & 1: 11 personnel, 2x2. Boyle immediately throws it to Breece in the right flat, 4 yards short of the line to gain. Just an awful decision. No need to throw the ball that quickly. No gain. (7-10, 35 yards)

0:02, 1st & 10: The play that will go down in infamy next to the butt fumble. Hail mary attempt. Picked at the goal line and returned 99 yards for a TD. Just awful. (7-11, 35 yards, 1 INT)

    1st Half Breakdown:
I've never seen a QB play at a level where I wanted Zach Wilson to be back under center for the Jets but that's what that first half did for me. Don't get me wrong, Zach is not good but he at least threw the ball down the field on occasion when he didn't panic in the pocket. The comp % looks good but that's because he didn't throw a ball past 3-4 yards downfield. I'm not sure how they can watch this tape back and think Boyle gives them the best chance going forward. Dude's a Checkdown Charlie. He's never going to stress the defense vertically which is going to lead to stacked boxes and a ton of Cover 2 looks.

    3rd Quarter:
    10:33, 2nd & 6:
11 personnel, trips bunch right. Gipson goes in motion right to left. PA pass where Miami's best defensive lineman comes untouched for a sack. Just pathetic playcalling & coaching. (7-11, 35 yards, 1 INT)

9:50, 3rd & 15: 11 personnel, empty set, trips left. Again, Boyle hits Conklin in the left flat after a chip and release. Gain of 8. (8-12, 43 yards, 1 INT)

    4th Quarter:
    14:55, 1st & 10:
11 personnel, trips left. Boyle throws the ball to Breece running a Texas route out of the backfield. Gain of 13. (9-13, 56 yards, 1 INT)

    14:32, 1st & 10: 11 personnel, 2x2. Boyle hits GW on a curl at the sticks. Gain of 9. (10-14, 65 yards, 1 INT)

14:05, 2nd & 1: 11 personnel, trips right. Boyle gets happy feet in the pocket. Somehow gets out of it unscathed but can't get the first and slides down short of the LOS. Technically a sack. Great idea Tim. Lose 2 yards for no reason instead of throwing it away. (10-14, 65 yards, 1 INT)

13:27, 3rd & 3: 11 personnel, trips right. Chubb comes untouched off the right side. Boyle hits Breece in the left flat. Gain of 1. (11-15, 66 yards, 1 INT)

12:48, 4th & 7: 11 personnel, trips right. Boyle throws a dart to Conklin on an in at the sticks. Well done all around. Gain of 8. (12-16, 74 yards, 1 INT)

12:26, 1st & 10: 11 personnel, 2x2. Not sure what Boyle saw here but this is a dangerous throw. Tries to squeeze it into Conklin running a slant into the underneath zone defender. Luckily falls incomplete. (12-17, 74 yards, 1 INT)

12:23, 2nd & 10: 11 personnel, trips right. Boyle turtles when he senses pressure and essentially falls down in the pocket. Sack. (12-17, 74 yards, 1 INT)

11:53, 3rd & 15: 11 personnel, trips right. Slip screen to Cook on the left flat. Good block by Tippman, Cook goes for a gain of 12. (13-18, 86 yards, 1 INT)

11:19, 4th & 3: 11 personnel, empty set, trips right. Dolphins bring pressure, Boyle hits GW on a slant from the left slot. Gain of 9. (14-19, 95 yards, 1 INT)

10:55, 1st & 10: 11 personnel, trips right. Boyle hits Ruckert on a slant from the right slot. Gain of 9. (15-20, 104 yards, 1 INT)

10:46, 2nd & inches: 11 personnel, trips right. Dolphins bring 5. Boyle hits his hot read in Ruckert but Ruckert gets smacked and drops it. Ruckert needs to bring this one in. It's a tough catch and Boyle could've put more zip on the ball to get in there quicker or thrown it sooner but it's catchable. (15-21, 104 yards, 1 INT)

    10:39, 3rd & inches: 11 personnel, 2x2. QB sneak. Boyle gets 2 yards for the first. (15-21, 104 yards, 1 INT, 1 rush, 2 yards)

10:08, 1st & 10: 11 personnel, empty set, trips right. Boyle hits GW on a slant/in from the left slot. GW drops it. Gotta bring these in GW, just have to. (15-22, 104 yards, 1 INT, 1 rush, 2 yards)

10:01, 2nd & 10: 11 personnel, trips right. Screen/designed pass to Breece. Tippman misses his block and Breece can't do anything with it. Gain of 1. (16-23, 105 yards, 1 INT, 1 rush, 2 yards)

9:15, 3rd & 4: 11 personnel, empty set, trips right. Boyle gets Miami to jump, free play. Throws a ball to GW short of the goal line but doesn't get enough on it and skips it to him. Incomplete. Tippman holds on the play though so offsetting penalties. (16-23, 105 yards, 1 INT, 1 rush, 2 yards)

9:09. 3rd & 4: 11 personnel, trips bunch right. Boyle hits Breece in the flat for a gain of 4. First down. (17-24, 109 yards, 1 INT, 1 rush, 2 yards)

    8:37, 1st & 10: 11 personnel, 2x2 stacked look. Nothing for Boyle downfield, gets sacked. (17-24, 109 yards, 1 INT, 1 rush, 2 yards)

8:01, 2nd & 16: 11 personnel, empty set, trips left. Boyle throws this ball way too late and to the outside of Breece. Gets tipped up and intercepted. Awful decision and throw by Boyle. (17-25, 109 yards, 2 INTs, 1 rush, 2 yards)

6:25, 1st & 10: 11 personnel, 2x2. Boyle immediately looks to Breece in the flat and throws a ball too far upfield. Incomplete. (17-26, 109 yards, 2 INTs, 1 rush, 2 yards)

6:22, 2nd & 10: 11 personnel, trips left. Boyle scrambles out left. finds Brownlee short of the sticks. Gain of 8. (18-27, 117 yards, 2 INTs, 1 rush, 2 yards)

5:48, 3rd & 2: 11 personnel, trips right. Conklin runs a slant from the right slot. Boyle hits him for a gain of 9. (19-28, 126 yards, 2 INTs, 1 rush, 2 yards)

5:30, 1st & 10: 11 personnel, empty set, trips right. Boyle throws one up to GW running a go/fade from the right slot. GW can't quite haul it in. Good anticipatory throw from Boyle though that gave GW a decent shot at it. Offsides negates the play though. (19-28, 126 yards, 2 INTs, 1 rush, 2 yards)

5:02, 2nd & 1: 11 personnel, trips right. Boyle hits Gipson short of the goal line on a sort of hook route, I guess? Again, good anticipatory throw. Ball is out before Gipson turns his head around. Gain of 8. Well done. (20-29, 134 yards, 2 INTs, 1 rush, 2 yards)

4:37, 1st & Goal: 11 personnel, 2x2. Beautiful mesh concept at the goal line (a competent play call by Hackett? Wow). GW gets through the traffic and is open. Boyle puts a bit too much air under it IMO but it's still a good throw and catch. Touchdown. PS: Hilarious to see Gipson wide open on the left side on the replay though. (21-30, 135 yards, 1 TD, 2 INTs, 1 rush, 2 yards)

3:35, 1st & 10: 11 personnel, trips left. GW comes in motion to condense the split and create a stacked look on his side with Brownlee. Mitchell gets beat like a drum by 91. Allows the pressure Boyle fumbles but Newman is able to get on the ball. (21-30, 135 yards, 1 TD, 2 INTs, 1 rush, 2 yards)

3:03, 2nd & 19: 11 personnel, empty set, trips bunch left. Boyle hits Ruckert in the left flat for a gain of 9. (22-31, 144 yards, 1 TD, 2 INTs, 1 rush, 2 yards)

2:36, 3rd & 10: 11 personnel, trips right. GW runs an out singled up on the left side of the formation. Boyle hits him for a gain of 11 and a first down. (23-32, 155 yards, 1 TD, 2 INTs, 1 rush, 2 yards)

2:31, 1st & 10: 11 personnel, 2x2. Boyle tries to hit Cook running an out to the right side of the formation. Throws it behind him. Incomplete. (23-33, 155 yards, 1 TD, 2 INTs, 1 rush, 2 yards)

    2:26, 2nd & 10: 11 personnel, 2x2. GW runs an out from the right slot. Boyle hits him for a gain of 4. (24-34, 159 yards, 1 TD, 2 INTs, 1 rush, 2 yards)

    2:01, 3rd & 6: 11 personnel, trips left. Boyle hits Cook out of the backfield. Gains 7 and gets a first. (25-35, 166 yards, 1 TD, 2 INTs, 1 rush, 2 yards)

    1:53, 1st & 10: 11 personnel, 2x2. Boyle hits Gipson in the right flat. Gain of 7. (26-36, 173 yards, 1 TD, 2 INTs, 1 rush, 2 yards)

    1:26, 2nd & 3: 11 personnel, 2x2. Boyle tries to hit GW on a deep post. Over throws it. Should've been another pick. (26-37, 173 yards, 1 TD, 2 INTs, 1 rush, 2 yards)

    1:20, 3rd & 3: 11 personnel, trips left. Pressure gets through the A gap and Boyle gets sacked. (26-37, 173 yards, 1 TD, 2 INTs, 1 rush, 2 yards)

0:42, 4th & 14: 11 personnel, empty set, trips bunch right. Boyle hits Bawden at the LOS and Bawden goes for a gain of 6. (27-38, 179 yards, 1 TD, 2 INTs, 1 rush, 2 yards)

    Half by Half Breakdown:
    1st Half:

    7-11, 35 yards, 1 INT

    2nd Half:
    20-27, 144 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT, 1 rush, 2 yards

    Total:
    27-38, 179 yards, 1 TD, 2 INTs, 1 rush, 2 yards

TLDR; I never thought I'd see the day that we put a QB that is worse than Zach Wilson on the field but that's what we got on Sunday. He had 43 passing yards going into the 4th quarter, so what little production he did get was only because we were already down 3 scores in the 4th. As I said in my intro, 4.7 yards per attempt is just awful and that was reflected on the tape. I saw a QB who can't push the ball downfield, is erratic in the pocket, and doesn't have a good sense on the timing of the offense. He had maybe 1-2 balls that went beyond 5-6 yards.

I'd be fine if we never saw Tim Boyle play another snap for this team. I would've prepped this week with Siemian under center but it looks like they're going to give Tim another shot against Atlanta. Let's hope he attempts a few more balls down field to keep the defense honest but I'm not banking on it.

Sorry, I refuse to relive that experience again.... and the fact that Siemian isnt starting next week means he shouldnt be on a roster or the GM and coach should go....

It was a tough one to watch again. Especially knowing that every pass was essentially just a check down around the LOS.

Can't wait to see Checkdown Charlie Boyle again vs Atlanta!! Bring your popcorn! lol

At this point I wouldn't even blame Garrett Wilson if he pulled an Antonio Brown and ran off the field in the middle of the game.

I was visiting my brother for the holiday.... we watched in his "bar" room, and by the end we were so mentally checked out and were more focused on depleting his 'supplies" that the end is kinda blurry to be honest.

I will start by saying that I am super impressed that you actually went through this. That is some serious dedication right there.

I will continue by saying that everyone knew Tim Boyle sucked anyway. lol

And finally, I will end by saying that both sides of the debate were correct. He showed more decisiveness and ability to process than Zach Wilson ever did, but it didn't change a damn thing.

    Thanks my friend!

I'm not sure I fully agree with the bolded. I can't remember a single instance of Boyle working through his progressions and hitting the 2nd/3rd/4th option. It was, look at the first read and throw if he's open or immediately go to his checkdown. I'm sure he did work through his progressions a couple of times and I'm just forgetting them now because I've already tried to block that breakdown from memory but off the top of my head, I can't remember a single instance of it happening. He was very unimpressive, which, as you said, is what most of us were expecting anyway. I will give Tim some minor kudos though, he did throw a couple of really nice anticipatory balls late in the game, which is something we rarely ever saw with Zach, so that was somewhat refreshing.

I do agree that both sides were right though. It was time to bench Zach but all of the offenses issues were not his fault. It's just unfortunate that Boyle is our best option to replace Zach. I have a feeling we'll see Siemian before the year is over.

I am probably using processing incorrectly, I am certainly not saying he got through multiple reads. He didn't have time for that. Lol what I'm saying is that he was very decisive, realized right away he didn't have any place else to go, and got the ball out. His accuracy sucks, and he seems to be colorblind to a degree, but there's just a crispness with him when he has time to throw that is not there with Zach most of the time.

Yes, don't get me started Siemian. I have no idea why the Jets think they are so cute and not so obvious. The fact that Boyle hasn't started until now when there were multiple reasons to do so, and the fact that Siemian is still not named the starter just further proves that they never intended to have anyone else other than Wilson try. They waited until the wheels fell off, and now they're stuck with two options that don't give them any real chance.

A complete disgrace. They will fully threw an entire season into the toilet.

On the decisiveness, we can definitely agree. Felt like the ball generally came out when it should have to his first read or it went immediately to his checkdown. I just don't think that type of QB play is viable in today's NFL. You have to be able to stress the defense vertically or you'll never be successful and I don't think that aspect will ever be present for the offense with Boyle under center.

I think they'll turn to Siemian after this week. I don't envision a scenario where Boyle lights it up against a decent Falcons D, but maybe in that situation it makes more sense to ride Boyle out the rest of the year and properly tank our way to a top 5 pick.

Agree on all counts, the Jets offense and the way they're running it is not viable in any football league.

I know this is off-topic, but the franchise has painted itself into a corner, it cannot spend its top 10 pick, or top 5 in your scenario, on a quarterback under any circumstances. They have forced the win or bust scenario, now they have to see it through. They can't alter course, so they should be looking to either get a monster lineman, or trade their first round pick for multiple pick regardless of where they finish.

But I suspect JD knows his feet are dangling off the edge and will go all out to get Davante Adams, thereby putting everything the franchise has for the next several years into the pot in an attempt to win in 2024.

    These playcalls are a joke.

Even with Zach they weren't attacking down field... with Boyle it's not even an option.

Zach really did give us the best chance to win...

It’s still a joke that once Rodgers went down, they decided that Boyle was the best option if we see exactly what we thought we’d see with Zach Wilson in all of those starts.

Even if it wasn’t Wentz or other options, we literally rolled with the guy that threw 1 touchdown to 13 career interceptions in college and has 158 attempts since he’s been eligible to be in the league in 2017/2018.

There’s not even the illusion that we might throw the ball down field. For fucks sake, I’ve been calling since the Darnold years to put a guy under center, identify cover 3, cover 1 or man. Send both receivers on fly routes, look left, throw right. Or run a play action with max protection. One guy runs a fly, one runs a 15 yard rounded deep over and make the safety choose.

No. We run 4 receivers on 5 yard stop routes.

thank you for doing this. It was brutal to watch him once. couldn't imagine doing it a 2nd time to write this up lol.
would be funny if you did dobbs latest game too since those were the 2 QBs people were saying to replace zach with.
as expected though, boyle was worse.

no idea how any team even gave him a chance as an UDFA in the NFL or how he stuck around so long. but I guess people like him in the QB room for his film study.

Thoroughly disagree. They traded for Rodgers because they felt they had a “championship roster” already. If there’s a QB that is truly a top tier guy then we need to take him. It’s about time they just live in the bed they made.

we need to load up for 2024. not take a QB. we can take one after rodgers retires and sign a 1 year stopgap to let the rookie sit for a year

Again, no. If a top tier QB is staring us in the face you take him. Our FO that you vehemently make excuse after excuse for openly stated this is currently a championship roster. They have enough for Rodgers. You don’t get many opportunities to draft a high value QB prospect. And anyway who gives a fuck about Rodgers. He gambled and lost. He’s lucky he gets a re-roll but we’ve mortgaged enough of our future for him. Next year is purgatory. Nothing good is coming. You know it, I know it, everyone out there knows it. We may well have a top 3 pick come draft day. We better damn well take a QB.
