Bingo... my degree didn't help me per se as I work with a bunch of people who don't have one but in my case the connections I made while in school helped me much more than my degree did. My kid wants to be a professional musician so obviously schools like USC and U of Miami which have incredible music programs but also some insane alums might be worth the money if he can network with them

My kid is a musician but he's also fluent in Mandarin as well as mixed race so I've told him many times there are lots of scholarships for Chinese kids, my grandparents were all immigrants so look for Irish, Italian and English societies that award scholarships. Find scholarships awarded to musicians but also get involved with organizations like Kiwanis and groups like that. I do work with the Ronald McDonald House here locally so I've got an in with them and they hand out money every year.

We're not there yet but it seems to me private schools especially the ones he's looking at give out more money than out of state state schools. Fortunately I've got some family in a few of the places he's looking at so in state tuition may be an option.

We looked at Northwestern and Notre Dame last year, he's also been to UCLA and we were supposed to go to Michigan this year but I got sick so we canceled the trip. Mine wants to go to Julliard yeah Julliard and honestly I know he's a great musician but I don't know if he's that good. If he does get in though I do have to assume that's going to cost more than buying a home and he absolutely wouldn't be able to pass that up. He had a guy from Berklee reach out and offer to give him lessons so I know he's really good but Julliard is elite.

He's playing some huge jazz conference in New Orleans in January and I'm hoping he has a chance to check out Tulane which is an incredible school but also the opportunity to go to school in New Orleans as a jazz musician would be amazing. With his discipline being jazz it'd be hard to imagine him going overseas for school but The University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna is an amazing music school and ridiculously inexpensive even for an American

What a young guy. I can endorse Tulane. Great school. Too bad it is in LA and not in our kids radar. A friend from Tulane passed away 3 years ago. He sold me on Tulane and I looked at it very detailed. Could be great from your son from what you are telling. Good luck to him as well.

Living in Nevada our options are limited , both UNLV and Nevada Reno are decent schools but for what he does music wise he's gotta leave the state. He's also top 20 in his class at his high school so education is high priority as well. He's one of the best high school aged bass trombone players on the west coast so he's definitely gifted. I really liked Northwestern but he's set on going to NY so I've suggested Rutgers as a backup if he doesn't get in to Julliard and obviously I've got family in NJ so he can get in state tuition. I just don't know if he'd want to do that. I want him to go someplace he can play on the weekends and make money and make connections while he's in school. Tulane would be perfect in so many ways. I think he's going to fall in love with New Orleans as well.
