NY Jets: Why Bryce Huff's situation could become common in NFL (jetsxfactor.com) The article says the Jets are hanging on to him with the expectation they will get a better compensatory pick after losing him in free agency next season than the pick they would get by trading him now.
If that's true, no one must have been offering more than a 5th round pick, maybe a 4th, as the best comp pick they can get is at the end of the 3rd round.
It makes sense. They tendered him for a second rounder, and no one bit. If he walks, they'll get a year of Huff as well as potentially a third round pick. Who knows, maybe he has an unbelievable year and the Jets re-sign him. I believe Lawson is a FA and that will free up some money.
I’m not sure I understand all the details of how that secret comp pick formula works, but one of the things that needs to happen is that you need to lose more free agents than you sign, right? If that’s the case, then JD would have to manage that part as well … would hate to lose Huff for nothing, and then not get a comp pick because we signed more free agents than we lost.
On another note, trading him would have made zero sense to me. We are win now. And part of what makes our D work is the constant pressure from our heavy rotation. We can send Lawson, JFM, JJ, McD, Clemons and Huff…that’s a pretty strong group of edge rushers especially when they are all fresh all the time. For where our team is now, with AR for maybe 2 years, maybe 3 even, we are win now…future comp picks, which are a bit of a crapshoot (do we really know if we’d get a 3rd or a 4th or a 5th?) aren’t as important as having the player this year.
I don't see that being a problem next year as we will have a TON of FAs (31+), with around 18-20 of them being starters and key backups, and we are tight under the cap. JD is going to have to do some real cap wizardry to keep our own players that we want to keep, especially Becton if he stays healthy and has a solid or great season. We won't be able to be big players in FA.
Didn't the jets Rework Lawson's contract this past year. I think Lawson will be here for another year.
He took a paycut, and I think they added voidable years to his contract. I don't recall if that means he will be here next year or not.
Just restructured with voidable years. Hell Vinny 6.4 mill against the cap in dead money in '24. He won't be under contract
If Huff balls out, he's getting paid, like for real. Depending on other moves, they won't be able to pay him, and this was the main reason WMac was drafted.
Lawson is one of those guys that JD should take a hit for. If his name was was Becton he'd be getting crucified
Even without Lawson and or Huff that DL is stacked between JJ, MCD, Clemons, JFM and Q….and who knows maybe they re-sign Huff.
I agree but bc they moved his money around, he's still gonna count 6.4 m against the cap next year. If Huff balls out this year, he's gonna get a big deal deal. I would love for it to be from the jets, but I just don't know how realistic it could be. Maybe he loves it here. Maybe they backload it. Time will tell
