Zach played well enough its OK he enters the season as the backup. No need to try to bring in someone else. With any luck we wont see him on the field again in a regular season game for 2-3 years. Maybe in that time he goes on an Ayahuasca/darkness retreat of his own and it helps the kid calm down....

I think there is way to much thought process in this board about Zach.
He most likely is not going to be a Jet in 3 years. After this season which hopefully he doesn’t play at all the Jets will have to decide to give him a contract extension or exercise his fifth year option and I doubt either will happen.

I agree there's too much angst on this board. Zack is getting better and will probably make some starts this year. Few QBs make it through 17 games. Good backup. Probably better than most.

he still has no idea where the blitz is coming from. the defense doesn’t even try to hide it against him.

until that changes, he will continue to be bad

    Things I liked:

He was decisive on some throws, especially with the roll outs, which seems to indicate he understands some of the basics of the offense. There were times the last two years, it looked like he didn't actually know beyond the first read.

He stayed more-so in the pocket than last year, still doesn't stand tall enough, tends to get a bit jittery, but better.

I liked the 3rd and 4 pass that Brownlee didn't catch. He was clearly interfered with, but Wilson stood tall in the pocket, stepped into the throw, and it was accurate. A good QB or WR gets that interference call. I like the route stem from Brownlee as well, if the CB wasn't interfering, then it creates good separation.

The pass right before the 2 min warning was also excellent, he stepped up into the throwing lane and had the pass right on the money.

The TD pass was good, although I wish he actually stepped into it a bit.

    Neither here nor there:

I didn't mind the missed TD pass to Hardman. The issue was the end zone, that's a pass comes close to hitting Hardman in stride in the middle of the field. But Hardman has to slow down because he needs to block the defender with his body to make the catch and stay in bounds. Wilson needs to put more air on that throw to act as a natural barrier (a rainbow throw) so Hardman can maintain his momentum. There is an open TE on a post route, but his first read is to go from Hardman, and it was open, so I don't blame him for taking the shot. If he moves on from Hardman, there is no time to get back to him, if the post is covered, since there was a safety in the middle. I like the read, and I like the the throw for the most part, I don't like the trajectory.

    Things I disliked:

Pre-snap reads were bad, and they've been horrible in the past too. The blitz 3rd down, was a perfect pre-snap alert opportunity. The LB jumped the blitz, perfect time to quickly alert to the blitz, since it's an inside blitz, and then snap. He didn't, guy ran untouched right up the middle.

The throw right after the Hardman miss on 1st and 20 was absolute moronic Wilson. It actually worked out that the throw missed the target by 10 feet, because if it was on target, that might have been a pick 6. There was no pressure at all, the CB was basically sitting on the out route, especially because Lazard is slow on the outbreak for that route. He slows down too much and the CB can read it. Without pressure, this is where Wilson needs to get off the read, and move to secondary options. Instead, he does his "look at the middle, hold the safety" and fire the pre-determined pass without actually reading the corner. That was a situation where the seam TE would have had a shot down the field if Wilson comes off the first read. It wasn't even a read, it was basically "I'm throwing it here anyway" deal.

The incomplete screen pass on 3rd down is another one from the same tree. Two defenders to that side, with a WR route and a RB coming out of the backfield. That has to be a read on the safety, if the safety bites as hard as he did to the RB, you look to the other side. Your first step back with the ball is the safety, and if he bites, you move to the right side with open options. If the safety doesn't bite, you play high/low with the WR/RB. Instead, it's a predetermined throw as soon as he gets the ball. Again, relatively clean pocket where he had time, but pre-snap read is bad, and he panics.

There's a quick RB outlet on 2nd and 6, where the RB gets tackled by 3 guys. Clean pocket, but the timing is ruined on the play. The two WRs running routes haven't cleared their defender when Wilson makes the throw. It's a predetermined RB outlet, but because of the timing, there is no chance of success. The slot CB is blitzing, meaning you have one on one matchups with both WRs on the outside, and your RB is going into the space, probably with a LB mirroring him. You have to read the WR/CB match up first because that's your runway clearance. If the CBs run back with the WR, you have a 1 on 1 match up with your RB vs LB. If the CBs get beat by your WRs, easy TD. The call vs the defensive play call works here, if you just don't do one thing, and that is showing impatience by throwing the ball early. I understand in blitz situations, he has to have a hot read but this is a horrible pre-snap read.

Overall, there seems to be some improvement but it's clearly a work in progress. He still has a really hard time processing pre-snap reads and that really hurts his post snap decisions at times. A lot of times I felt like he had his mind made up pre-snap on where to throw.

On the things you disliked, I wouldn't be so sure that it's a matter of Wilson panicking. It looked to me like Hackett limited Zach last night to basically screen passes and short passes, to work on his accuracy, being decisive and getting the ball out quickly. If I'm correct, then he wasn't really working or looking at other reads. I think he only threw a few passes to WRs. He completed one to Brownlee on the TD drive right before the end of the half, but other than a few passes you mentioned, the rest were all screens and dump offs. You may be right on pre-snap decisions on where he's going to go with the ball, but I've seen that from a lot of QBs in the NFL. I've seen Brady do it, Rodgers do it, and other very good QBs do it. That doesn't mean that it's necessarily OK or that there are times where it is OK and other times where it isn't.

I'll re-watch the 1st half and watch for the things you pointed out in your dislikes.

For me, I'm just looking where Zach was at the end of last season, to now.
He was badly bruised mentally, his confidence was shot, his HC let some of his teammates openly criticize him, & he was ridiculed by the media & the fans. He was a mess.
The easy way out for him would've been to quit on himself, or gone into some type of self-denial.
Instead, he seems to have dusted himself off, & matured.
I give him a lot of credit for hanging in there, putting his ego aside, & embracing his new role.
He's not the spoiled rich kid, I initially thought he was. He seems to be learning his lessons.

What's next who knows, but I've gained a lot of respect for him as a man.

I am drinking the soma and fast forwarding to Post Season

I see the Progress in ZW..but he has to be a solid backup guy by December. Why do I worry we need another Vet QB on the roster? Just need to feel more confident tbh

    Is this an absurd thought?

His accuracy…Still almost made Bam Knight ribs into BBQ sauce.

But yeah his confidence is soooo much better. Go Zach!

Yup…that throw to Bam was classic old Zach…way off target, this time too high, to a RB in the flat that should have been an easy completion. And because it was high, he exposed his RB to a potentially vicious hit. Had he hit the RB in stride, he at least gives him a chance to make a move and maybe get that first down. But the placement on that throw meant the first down was impossible, even if Bam could have pulled it down.

And that’s the kind of play that makes Zach SO infuriating. He makes the simple throws look so damn hard way too often. That throw is not on the OL, it’s not on the OC, it’s not on any other damn excuse that is made for him…it’s on HIM.

I don’t know what it’s going to take for this kid to “get it”, but that throw was a great example of what prevents him from being the guy.

And sure, I get that every QB does that once in a while…but for Zach, it’s too commonplace.

Watched the Raiders/Niners game and Trey Lance looks much worse than Zach. Bad footwork, bad reads, bad throws, and doesn't look like an NFL QB. Darnold looked much better than him.

Play Wilson for 3 quarters on Saturday. Pass ,pass ,pass. Showcase the arm. . Then trade him the following week. There are better options out there
