The West has not been pushing Ukraine to join NATO. In fact there have been redlines drawn that have prevented Ukraine from applying, primarily based on the oligarchs and overall corruption.

This was true in 2014 after the Ukraine Revolution and it was true in 2016 when Obama was still President and it was true in 2018 when Trump was President and it was still true in 2022 when Biden was President.

However now the odds are pretty good that Ukraine will be considered favorably at the end of hostilities when they apply. This is because they have tremendous sweat equity built up in the heroic response to Russian aggression. They're still going to have to get everybody's acquiescence but odds are pretty good they're in.

You're saying that our response would have been to invade Mexico??? If we did that, then Russia should help their ally defend themselves. But even Dubya wouldn't have been crazy enough to try that one.

You know this whole thing has me thinking do we really want the Wagner guys to have nukes? Seems like that outcome could be really really bad for everyone including Russians

You'll note that nowhere in the article that you linked does it suggest that *anybody* outside Ukraine encouraged Ukraine to actually join NATO. Nor does it suggest that Ukraine actually made an application to join NATO. Nor does it suggest that anybody outside Ukraine began the process of allowing Ukraine to join NATO.

    Same is true of Georgia.

Both countries have had 30 years now to make application to join NATO and neither have done so because it is clear that NATO saw them as red-lined by Russia and decided not to push the issue.

The Baltic Republics on the other hand were admitted quickly after the fall of the Soviet Union because the corruption that gripped much of the rest of the former USSR was not present at the same level.

The first article says it in the first two lines.

Obama literally directly says it in an address as per the speech on the Crimea annexation.

Since you want to drag Georgia into it.

Toss in arming them to the teeth and meddling in their most recent election to install a Western leader and you have a perfect formula to piss Russia off.

Russia is definitely more corrupt than the US but we are diligently closing the gap.

Maybe we can slow down to $40 billion/year in spending on this war now.

This is the wrong war fighting style. Ukraine should have went they asymmetrical route and just bled the Russians until they retreated. They'd still have a country instead of an apocalyptic wasteland to rebuild. Would have been far easier on our budget too. Head to head, Russia will eventually either win in the Ukraine or destroy it completely. Asymmetrical Warfare works in the long run as was proven in Vietnam, Afghanistan, Israel to name a few.

The US could’ve made a stronger push towards a peace treaty rather than allow the war mongers in both parties in DC push to keep funding the Ukrainian’s so the donor class could get rich on war time efforts (while not fully sanctioning Russian oil).
