We need a complimentary thread focused on the D line... if only because it's a stronger unit. So... are the Jets gonna move Michael Clemons inside? He's reportedly hulked up to 290 lbs. Him & Jermaine can reek some havoc. Why NY Jets should consider changing Micheal Clemons’ position The ideal snap-count distribution plan for NY Jets D-line
I thought Clemons was poised to take a big step next year which is another reason why I didn’t think taking McDonald made much sense. Unless he wants to play nose tackle, bulking up doesn’t make much sense even if he’s going to play 5i in the NASCAR type packages. He doesn’t need to be bigger to play that than his previous 270. The Jets also experimented with a similar sized athlete in Shaun Ellis and you can’t just move big defensive ends inside and hope it works because they ended up around the size of a 3T. I think rotating and staying fresh is great, but rushing the passer can be as much about rhythm as anything else in sports as well.
I read somewhere that the plan was to handle him like they do JFM...that they would be at DE on running downs and move inside on passing downs.
Maybe we should let them earn the compliments. Nania rarely writes anything that's not complimentary.
Does our OL suck? Yes. No. Undecided. jackass I'll kill you That last one was before your time, but I think that was it.
I'm a little bit concerned about the rush defense. We don't have a big body up front that can clog up the middle. Right now, only two guys listed on the DL over 300 lbs. and neither of them trip the scale at over 310.
Al Woods will help. He’s a true NT. I’m not too high on Soloman Thomas or Jefferson playing too many snaps, or kicking one of the bigger ends in on more than subpackages tho. Tbh would not mind looking into Suh, who would be a big upgrade from Rankins last year. Out D could use more physicality and nasty. Prob wouldn’t cost much at all at this stage.
What about Al Woods? He is great vs the run. The Jets have him listed at only 309 lbs, but the NFL has him listed at 331.
I think that ship sailed 3-4 seasons ago, maybe longer. Evidently he wears his welcome out with the teams who sign him (he's played for 5 different teams over the last 5 seasons) even though he had 10 sacks in 2021 and 9.5 last season. I'm sure he won't be cheap, either. We have plenty at Edge, in fact, we're probably not going to have enough snaps to give to everyone. Clemons, Huff, and Johnson all deserve considerably more snaps this season than they got last season. McDonald deserves a nice chunk of snaps this season. JFM and Lawson don't deserve to have their snaps cut back severely.
You can never have too many pass rushers…. We have a lot of pass rushers. I hear he wants a long term contract, would you sign him for 3 years?
I feel quite good about our D line especially in passing situations, but also think we are under estimating how much damage Clemons can also contribute against the run to help plug up the middle. I actually feel better about the D line that the strength at LB, but could be dead wrong.
Ngakoue is a weird case. Teams are desperate for sacks and QB pressures and he does it damn near as good as anyone. He doesn’t play the run whatsoever but that’s known so teams know they’re not putting him on the goal line. I don’t know if he’s a dickhead in the locker room or what but the Jets have a two year window. It feels as though it’s a very obvious rip and replace with Lawson for him if he’s down.
