There are more than 4 starting caliber C coming out this year…. We’re not going to have a problem drafting one of them. IMO the Jets appreciate Browns leadership and experience in the position group. Penciling in the expected starting lineup, I don’t see the Jets picking an OL at 13. I can see us getting one or two in the 4th to get some depth and youth for next year. Someone like the kid from BYU who has the athleticism but needs to out on some weight and develop technique… something he can maybe learn from Brown. Or the kid from USC who could slide into RG in ‘24 when we move on from L.T.
I don't believe that you're really conveying anything that wasn't already common knowledge? What I do know is the following: 1) I don't believe we've ever seen our current group of intended starters play together? Injuries have made that impossible. 2) As individual pieces, I love what I've seen. Don't know about the collective. 3) What you can say in conclusion about this group is that there are too many injuries to be considered reliable. 4) There are still areas that could afford to be upgraded like Center. 5) It seems like because of so many injuries that versatility in New players is needed and certainly more important than anything else is DURABILITY in new players. 6) There were times last season when this group DOMINATED the defensive front. It did not ever happen again after the first Buffalo game. It was very thorough domination as well. In other words, the opposition knew we were going to run the ball, they had time to get the defensive front they desired in the game, and they still could not stop the Jets OL from opening holes for the running game. It looked VERY impressive as I was seeing it unfold. I think based on the above it's important to note that we need new players on the OL because we cannot trust the current compliment to stay healthy. We need still need to upgrade the Center spot. I also believe there are players currently on the team that should no longer be with the team - Fant, Brown, McGregor. Of that group the only starter I see is McGregor. In the case of Fant and Brown I do not believe they can be relied on to start and play well. IMO, if I'm JD I want to get a Center and Tackle out of this draft. In regards to injured players like AVT and Mitchell, I'm not ready to move on. I just hope they get healthy and remain healthy. In regards to Becton, I hope for the best but I expect the worst. We need to prepare for the latter by drafting another Tackle. I think versatility and injury history should be factors we consider highly before drafting a player. This COULD be an excellent group but it's really impossible to know given the current situation and the factors that are part of it....
He's very impressive as well, underrated. There Is a belief he would've benefited from going back to OSU. I think OSU would've benefited from him staying, not sure It would've helped him as much. He Is a stud, he's not as good as a prospect coming out as Nick Mangold but he's probably a tier underneath that. Still a very good player. For anyone that Is curious about this kid, go watch OSU Vs Georgia. Jalen Carter Is probably the best player In this draft. IMO ...and Wypler handles Carter consistently. He really shown he was ready for the next level In that game, on top of the great film he put out leading to that game. I would absolutely LOVE the Jets to draft this kid. I really like all of the OSU linemen In this draft though. I REALLY like Wypler for us specifically though. Just. My 2 cents.
I know a lot of people dont respect PFF; for those that do, here’s his breakdown. Where he wins: Leverage Wypler understands line-of-scrimmage play. He’s so good at establishing and re-establishing leverage. His game is what you’d expect from a fifth- or sixth-year player. What’s his role: Center Wypler doesn’t have an ideal frame to move to guard. He’s going to be a center at the next level. What can he Improve: Anchor This isn’t too surprising considering he’s a third-year player declaring early. One can expect this to improve in the coming years, but it’ll likely still be an issue early on in his NFL career. Good news for the OL Jets left tackle Duane Brown plans to play another season. Brown ended the 2022 season on injured reserve and he recently had surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff, but his agent Kennard McGuire told Rich Cimini of ESPN that his client plans on playing in 2023. Brown said at the end of the season that he would take some time before deciding on his plans.
I am one of those people that don't value PFF. However, I agree to an extent. I think his big issue Is how long he's able to engage blockers, tie them up, he loses leverage to early and tends to get lost In the wash. However, he Is very sound, technical, he can stand up well against stronger players. IE: Jalen Carter.. He tends to get stagnant at times though with It. I think If he adds to his frame a bit and gets stronger, with more experience, he will end up being a very good center In the NFL. He Is very athletic, a very good swing center with really good hands and technique. I'd love for this kid to be our next center. Several good options at the position this year though.
There's a difference between "trying" and succeeding. And that difference is competence. St. Joe is not competent at assembling a top 5 OL. He has had 3 drafts (24 selections) and seasons to get it done, and here we are still talking about his failure. If you had his record at your current job would you still be employed?
I guess that depends on how competent of a company we're talking about. If I hired an individual who was going into their first stint at a said position, I would expect some growing pains as they tried to figure it out. Especially if I gave that person a 6 year contract because both they and I knew that the situation they were coming into was not ideal, to say the least. Which is what we went through for the first few years of JD's tenure, growing pains. Now, the season after he drafted the DROY and OROY, and signed one of the best CB's in the league for pennies on the dollar, people seem to be all up in arms about him. You'd think he was the 2nd coming of Maccagnan or Idzik. There's a reason we're at the top of the list for Rodgers and Carr. Clearly people in the league see what JD has done to turn this roster over in 3 years and make it a desirable destination.
I fully appreciate a post that references competence while also implying 24 selections should have been spent on OL.
Interesting twist out of KC today. Brown Jr. is not set to be a free agent next week. I seriously doubt we go for him because he's gonna make a lot of money but it would certainly fill one of our biggest holes/question marks going into the draft.
Sign Brown , draft Wypler or JMS let's go! #13 pick becomes easier to lose for A Rod if we shore up OT Or if we keep BPA steal that monster TCU WR or edge rush or ILB beast maybe trade back. Options!
Idzik drafted the defensive rookie of the year and a pro bowl QB. He also managed 8 wins in a season. JD has to improve a bit before he can be considered to be as good as Idzik.
Injuries DO happen, as part of football. MULTIPLE injuries to the same player in short spurts of time mean that the player lacks the physical gifts to play football. He's Done. The Jets need to accept it and move on, especially if they plan on blocking for a 40+ year old Quarterback.
Let's talk... And the repeated injuries of the same players over and over is not a reason for concern? I would love to see an example of what you love that excludes the use of the letters "A", "V", and "T" in succession. That's not a conclusion, that is a damning indictment. As a whole, this group lacks the physical gifts necessary to play their assigned role in the sport. I needs to be demolished and rebuilt with significant resource costs (Draft picks and Salary) That's like getting a crappy dinner served to you at a restaurant and complaining they ran out of ketchup. Give me durability any day of the week and twice on Sunday. Versatility & Quality is a very, very rare combination, which is why it is a crime that Joe Klecko was denied the Hall of Fame for so long. Every one of them should be cut TODAY. That's how bad they are.
