With new rules geared towards helping Offense score as many points as possible, not sure if we can change the claim to “Offense wins Championships” That said a good offense has 3 elements. A good QB - Jets have none A good OL - We are average at best Good skill players - We are good there with G.Wilson and B.Hall Hope Jets can get a good QB and fix OL to catch up with changing times
It makes you wonder how much you should pay for an interior lineman like Quinnen Williams. He's a very good player coming off an excellent year but I wouldn't blow up the cap for him. Why? Because defense doesn't win championships any more.
The Chiefs D held the Eagles to 11 points in the second half. The Bucs D held the Chiefs to 9 in the Super Bowl two years ago. The Pats and Rams were tied at 3 for a while in the Super Bowl four years ago. Defense still matters, but an above average offense is needed to reach the big game.
Jets have had good defenses in my lifetime. Nothing to show for it. In today's NFL the other team will break through sooner or later no matter how good a defense plays.
You need a semblance of balance, but Yes it does.... unless it's the screen name of toolbags on internet message boards
For the past 20 years that saying has been outdated. The NFL recognized that most fans want lots of points scored and so changed/tweaked the rules, and told the refs to "help" the offenses, especially the QB. Unfortunately the Jets either didn't get the memo or ignored it. Defense is important of course, especially in big games, but there is no such thing as a "shut down defense" any more. A "can't shut down offense" is more important.
This made me think of the Rex Ryan defenses. Really good 90% of the time but the other 10% of the time was them choking at the worst possible times.
You can turn a defense around in one season. We do it time and time again. Offense takes skill and intelligence from the FO, something we’ve lacked since the ice ages.
Brook sorry to sound like Captain Obvious, but all three aspects of the game offense, defense, and special teams matter. One could argue the Chiefs were good in all three aspects for example.
Defenses can win you championships if you can get them off the field occasionally. Run, run, pass, punt rarely helps.
You need both but I would argue having an elite offense and a solid-good defense is a better recipe for a championship in this day and age.
