So OC have nothing to do with QBs? QBs are just born great or crappy. Jets just always pick crappy. Russel was awesome under Hackett, terrible when he got fired. OC just sits in dark room, designs genius plays, calls genius plays during games then if players can’t execute it is bad players, not bad coaching, teaching, developing. The OC job is to take the players he has and put them in a position to succeed and get the most out of the talent he has in his group. MLF never did that, ever. It was more about how smart he was. I will take the Broncos as an example. They had Tebow, changed everything won a playoff game. Got Manning, completely different O. Manning got old, Kubiak, changed the O to much more run heavy and defense friendly to win SB. He didn’t just cry about how manning was old as hell so he couldn’t do his job.

Bevell sucks. If Saleh hires him he deserves to get fired. He needs to hire the right person, not people he knows.

That's encouraging. He sounds like a good talent evaluator. He certainly Did a good job with Tua over in Miami.

As many of the Jets beat writers have pointed out, coaches like Kubiak and Reich might be less enthused about coming here with the "playoffs or you're fired" mandate that currently exists.

Hang on tight. It's gonna be a wild ride.

If the Qb sucks, the OC will look bad. If the QB is good, the oc will look good.

The Jets had the worst QB play in the league. When they got decent play from Mike White sans broken ribs, they were good on offense

White had one good game against a bad Bears defense. Once they got tape on MW it was all downhill. Same with Zach, Zach played well second half Pitt, Miami, Buffalo and Detroit. The offense was only above average one game. This is all on the OC. He almost got Mike White killed, Zach running for his life and god only know what he was trying to do with Flacco.

His schemes were suspect and plays at times head-scratching. "He schemed open receivers" sometimes but not enough to compensate for bad o-line play and leaving the QB hanging with no hot reads.

One more thing an OC that can scheme well usually does a good job the first 15 scripted plays. Gase was even good at that MLF?

Goodby MLF don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out.

John Morton. He’s currently the senior offensive assistant for the Detroit Lions, one of the best offenses in football.

If they paired him with Darnold, Darnold would still be the QB here.

Don’t interpret my post as me defending MLF. He wasn’t good by any means. Constantly in second or third and long situations. Too much east/west offense. He never adjusted the run game to account for losing AVT and Breece Hall.

However, it is extremely difficult to call plays when the QBs were as bad as they were.

Some candidates names being passed around and a dark horse pick

Matt Nagy, Chiefs – Senior assistant/quarterbacks coach (Mega time under Reid)

    - Chiefs senior assistant/quarterbacks coach (2022-present)

    - Chiefs offensive coordinator (2016-2017)

    - Chiefs quarterbacks coach (2013-2015)

Frank Reich – Shit loads of experience on and off the field

    - Colts head coach (2018-2022)

    - Eagles offensive coordinator (2016-2017)

    - Chargers offensive coordinator (2014-2015)

Greg Olson, Rams – Senior offensive assistant (If we go with Carr at QB, this could be the guy)

    - Raider’s offensive coordinator (2018-2021)

Kliff Kingsbury – He can mode an offense around a QB

Jay Gruden, LA Rams - Offensive Consultant (No one has mentioned him)

    - He has been a very successful OC on teams and worked with young QBs

It’d be so Jets to hire a guy who just completely failed at his job in Hackett.

He also never called plays in Green Bay and clearly couldn’t do it in Denver.

What part of the world is Jeremy Bates in these days? I'm sure we can call that offensive genius to come back. I imagine he looks like Tom Hanks in Castaway now.

It is hard to call plays when you are constantly behind the sticks. That was the biggest problem with MLF play-calling. His play designs were another issue. What we do not know is how he was coaching the progressions and I suspect with the play of the Qbs it was suspect as well.

I really hope Saleh is not considering the OCs who were literally the worst at their jobs last time they called the offensive plays. Hackett led 32nd (worst) offense in points this year, and Bevell 32 (worst) offense in points last year, last time he was calling plays. I mean if we do this, we quite literally will be going from bad to worst. Does not make much sense.
