I know we already have a Coach thread on the main page and I will eventually merge this with that one. But who does TGG members prefer over the other. Only 2 choices. Payton or Harbaugh. No "Undecided", No "I don't know man" Gun to your head and you gotta pick one of the two, who would you go with and why?
For me, it is Harbaugh. Cons - A douchebag - Less NFL experience than Payton - Known to get into power struggle with Front Office after a while. Pros - Seems to have wonders while at SF - Repeated his success at Michigan - Developed Andrew Luck and made Kapernick more than a serviceable NFL QB
If both are guaranteed Payton. I’d take either of them but the Saints were a bigger joke franchise than us before he got there.
To secure one of these gentlemen as our HC would be akin to bringing Parcells in here, or, going from a 1975 VW bug to a 2023 Ferrari, or, going from a ham sandwich to filet mignon. And that is exactly why it is not happening
Harbaugh because we've never seen Payton win without Brees. Could easily end up being a Belichick without Brady situation. But of course I'd take either one in a heartbeat, not that we have any chance to get them.
Harbaugh. Jim likes and has developed very good tough defenses people seem to forget. We know how he helped rejuvenate Alex Smith's career, and made Kaepernick a stud for a couple seasons. I like Harbaugh's personality actually. He's a different kind of guy. As HomeoftheJets mentioned, we don't know what Payton really is without Brees. Now that's not to say he couldn't be special, we just don't know. Harbaugh with his limited NFL experience already has Payton beat in that department. Harbaugh obviously knows QB's so if we finally draft a good one I trust he can develop them properly. Also, Brees did have a little bit of success before Payton in 2004, 2005, but no one will doubt that their relationship was a match made in heaven. My longwinded answer is either one lol
Wrong Harbaugh. Jim can't get it done in Ann Arbor. Doubt he can get better with a perennial loser in the New York Jets. Payton has to be the choice. He made Brees a winning HOF QB. Drafted pretty well and won an SB in New Orleans. Stay away from any Harbaugh not named John.
Drew Brees is one of the best QB's ever. He certainly helped Payton succeed. Harbaugh got to the Super Bowl with Kaepernick. That is pretty impressive. I think I would lean towards him, unless Payton was bringing a QB with him. The knock on Harbaugh is he doesn't stay places too long. Guess what? My favorite Jets Head Coach was Bill Parcells. He was here 97-00 and changed the whole franchise in the 4 year process. I would sign up for something similar with Harbaugh. I would take both over Robert Saleh easily. My gut feeling is Woody gives him a third year though.
We don't need either we got Robert the false prophet taking receipts Saleh. Put him in Canton now!!! Your getting a receipt just for suggesting we replace the best coach in Nfl history!
Payton would cost the team a 1st round pick, but Harbaugh would only cost Woody $3 Million out of his pocket.
Does Payton really want to bet his legacy that Russell Wilson is fine and Nathaniel Hackett was Gase 2.0?
Best course of action for Broncos is to try to dump Russel Wilson and take a year or two off to accumulate high picks for a rebuild in 2-3 years. They are in a worst possible hole in terms of salary cap and draft picks, Payton sounds like a luxury for them at this point.
Harbaugh. Been a winner everywhere he's been and he's the kind of tough-minded disciplinarian type coach that this team needs right now.
And to that point, if the Jets want a veteran, successful QB, they might be able to get R. Wilson at a reasonable price. I wouldn't overpay for him, but he'd definitely be better than most of the names mentioned for us.
Why? It doesn’t count against the cap. In fact the HC position is the one I least care about what they pay, just get the right guy.
