The whole cap thing always confuses the shit out of me, but, who do think will be a cap casualty going into next season? I know a lot of you understand this whole dead $ thing. CD Carl Lawson Berrios
Tomlinson will be cut first chance they get. That was a terrible signing. likely the guys on your list too, although maybe they decide to keep Corey Davis at around $11 mil next year. Lawson at $15 mil is just too much and Berrios can start packing his bags now, oh wait we have 1 more game
I remember a lively discussion on here last off-season about Tomlinson. I and some others were mentioning how stupid it was and how Buffalo got Saffold for way less than half what Douglas paid for Tomlinson. Strong opinions on here had a real problem with that take though. I think I was called a troll because I disagreed with PFF. But Saffold has been very good and Tomlinson was shit. Lesson for all PFF is useless and their analysis is terrible
Lawson has actually had a pretty decent season especially coming off of a catastrophic injury. But there’s no way you can keep him around at that number. Such a bummer he got hurt because he was a perfect fit and was having a monster camp for the Achilles injury. I would keep Corey Davis. We aren’t exactly budding with talent in the wide receiver room and who the hell knows what’s going to happen with Elijah Moore. He’s a solid veteran presence who has had a decent season. Berrios either needs to go or be restructured. Tomlinson has to go on general. Jordan Whitehead has been abysmal vs the pass but great in the box. That’ll be a tough decision. Mosley should stick and I think he will.
I bet they cut Corey Davis, while he had some great moments this season he gets hurt way too often. He was Zach's safety blanket but, Zach will not be starting.
Decent info here: https://overthecap.com/salary-cap/new-york-jets Lawson and C. Davis it makes no sense to keep. $25 mil in savings cutting them both. After that it becomes unclear. Tomlinson contract seems like they dont save anything by cutting him at least before June 1st. Given the choices available in the free agency QB market and other than maybe Payton not too many HC's worth moving on, dont be surprised if the Jets management gives the GM and HC one more year to rebuild and keep ZW and MW in the building and maybe draft another QB to groom mid-rounds.
They need to do something at the QB position. You can't go into the season with White and Wilson. Wilson is awful and White can't stay healthy. They really need to sign someone.
Here is what we are initially looking at: This years free agents (not listing PS guys): Defense: Nathan Shepard Vinny Curry Qwon Alexander Zane Lewis Bryce Huff Lemarcus Joiner Quincy Williams Sheldon Rankins Solomon Thomas Offense: Mike White Joe Flacco James Robinson Ty Johnson LDT Dan Feeney Conner McGovern George Fant Special Teams: Greg Zeurlien Most of these players will cost more than they are currently getting, especially on defense. Players we may need to dump for under performing contract (Bolded players include a dead cap hit): Carl Lawson Corey Davis Braxton Berrios Jamien Sherwood (177 thousand DC) CJ Uzomah (11 million DC) Laken Tomilson CJ Mosley (15 million DC) If we cut all of these guys the dead cap and the savings would about even out. But we'd have to refill their roles which would put us deep into the negative. There is also one big decision with Mosley. Mosley has a special circumstance due to the opt out year. If we cut him this year we take a 15 million dead cap hit. If we keep him we pay him 17 million for 2023, and he still holds a 10 million dead cap hit in 2024, or another 17 million salary in 2024, and still holds a 6 million dead cap hit in 2025. Either we pay Mosley essentially 40 million for the next two seasons or we cut him now for a 15 million dead cap. Or, we essentially pay him 27 million dollars for next season before cutting him. He almost has to be cut.
Lawson, Tomlinson, and Davis are for sure cuts--don't restructure, cut 'em. Mosely is a likely cut, too many missed tackles for $21M next year. Franklin-Myers should be restructured. I am actually ok with Berrios. I could live with the jets giving Mims a full-time shot next year with Moore and G. Wilson. Berrios could be the 4th-5th receiver. His cap number is not that bad. One of the jets TE should be cut to give Ruckert a chance. Neither of the jets current TE are much of a blocker. But, yes, none of this matters without decent QB play. I saw a report today that they plan to hang onto Zach Wilson. Good grief! Douglas will never admit his blunder of the decade. I understand his cap number if he is moved, but has there ever been a more unpopular teammate with the other players than Zach? Move him if for no other reason than confidence and optimism going into next season.
agreed on your last point. They have to move on from Zach Wilson. If he’s still on the roster I’m gonna assume some JetBlue influence especially if the staff gets fired and he’s retained. If I’m assuming that, you know the players are and that’s a broken locker room
I could see JD keeping Tomlinson in hopes of winning an extra game or two next year to keep his job. Cutting him loose doesn't save all that much money next year but we need to rip off the bandaid so he is off our books the following year.
Have you looked at the contract. Cutting Zach pre June 1costs Jets $11M in cap, after june $6M in cap. Unless traded, which would be post June 1, he will be on this team. Insane to cut him.
Yeah, the OP hit it right: Berrios, Davis and Lawson are definitely gone. Maybe Lawson can take a pay cut and return, because no one is going to pay him $15 million on the market. Berrios went from a fan favorite in 2021 to completely annoying in 2022. Blonde hair, good for one play a game and his returns have been nothing this season. I'd be fine cutting him today.
$6M is nothin’ and worth it for the locker room. Hell maybe someone would even trade something for him, who knows
