It's funny how last year many were saying there was no need to tank because we got the better QB in Wilson than the Jags did with Lawrence anyway. Wonder how many are saying that now?

How about no more early first round QBs?

Thats close to what I said earlier...sit ZW for all of 2023. Play whoever you want at QB. Then start ZW all of 2024 after a year of watching and learning under his belt. Either he's fixed and we have our FQB for years to come, or he still sucks and we draft that young Manning kid.

With the Jets just an O-Line and a half decent quarterback away from making some noise in the playoffs let's tank and be the laughingstock of the NFL another year for a maybe. No Thanks.

No, the message that was sent is tanking is OK, it's OK for the owner to repeatedly tell the coach that draft position takes priority over winning. And this is only what the investigation found - something that got recorded somewhere. I am sure there were things said in private that investigation cannot really find. If they didn't punish Miami for tanking here after they found evidence the owner repeatedly was telling coach draft position is more important than wins, it's simply allowed.

Let's pretend for a second the the League cared about tanking like it does about tampering. They took 2023 pick away for tampering from Miami - a tampering that occurred before 2020. In this imaginary scenario where league would punish tanking and take a pick 3 years later - you still got your guy! Jags clearly tanked for Lawrence by benching a decent QB for a scrub, so say League decided to punish it. So, 3 years later after Jags are in play-offs, you give up a late 1st rounder and get to keep Trevor anyway. Still well worth it to tank even if the League cared about, which as I showed above, it does not.

The full all time list of QBs drafted #1 overall to win the Super Bowl for the team that drafted them is Peyton Manning, Troy Aikman, Terry Bradshaw.

Going even further back, before the combined draft and before the Super Bowl:

George Shaw won an NFL Championship for the Baltimore Colts back in '58.
Joe Namath was selected 1st overall in the AFL draft, but he was only 12th overall (by the St. Louis Cardinals) in the NFL draft.

Sure, a thing that has worked out at most 5 times in the history of professional football will work out for this franchise. We should totally bet the house.

Elway was a draft day trade. Colts took knowing he was being traded to broncos.

Too much talent on the roster to even attempt this. I remember saying something similar in 2020. The Jets were bad then, but they had too much talent to keep losing. They blew that MNF vs the Patriots and then the last second vs the Raiders to keep the winless streak going, but the Rams and Browns games caught up to them in the end.

This Jets team is even better. If they actually did your plan, they still would end up winning 4-6 games at least. Not close to the #1 overall pick.

Also, the Jets just need to find a QB. Could be via free agency, or later rounds in the draft, or a trade. They just need to hit on one.

An owner with balls and no brain would absolutely bail on an entire season while pinning their hopes on a quarterback who hasn’t even left college yet.

We had Trevor Lawrence staring us in the face and we won some meaningless games IN DECEMBER just to ensure we wouldn't have him as our stud QB for the next 10-15 years. That was our best shot.

Once every 10 years or so there is a guy that may be worth tanking for. Trevor was that guy, before that it was Luck, before that Manning. And out of these 3 even Luck didn't exactly work out long term - only gave 5 good years. But, you may have a point in the scenario of Trevor specifically. And, indirectly, we did tank. Gase was the worst coach in NFL by a lot. Sam was the worst QB in NFL by a lot. We won two games, and really it was 1 game against the Rams that we actually won. Browns game was against 3d stringers of Cleveland due to Covid. It just wasn't a fair contest, but this was a crazy season. It was just luck that Jags got TL and we didn't. To go 0-16, even for someone as horrible as Gase is a lot to ask for. The following year rookie coach Saleh won 4 games with very similar roster and actually much worse at QB than Sam with rookie Zach. Every other year 2 wins would have been enough to get 1st overall. And as I said before, even if by some miracle we get to 0-15, Belichick probably loses on purpose to make sure we don't get Trevor. It just wasn't in the cards.

What doesn't make sense though is to tank for Caleb Williams, who is not generational, and when we actually have a pretty good young team.

Tabking is not the answer, but neither is this. If we want to win a SB history has proven out that we need a franchise level QB to do it, and the place to get them is overwhelmingly in the first round. What we need is a scout team dedicated to evaluating QB’s. Not just seeing a cool throw on pro days and jizzing their pants type scouts. I’m talking scouts that sit a prospect down and drill them on offensive and defensive schemes. Drill them on recognition of defenses and where the ball is supposed to go. Evaluate how fast they can come to that conclusion. Put them under a ton of mental pressure in the evaluation and see how they respond. When all that comes back at a high level then rank arm strength and athleticism. Patrick Mahomes is not just a stellar athlete, he’s a fantastic pocket passer. He just happens to also be dangerous when the play breaks down as well. The trend in this copycat league of ours seems to place more emphasis on the ability after a play breaks down and not on the actual play, which is an insulting way to use Mahomes as your example.

Not draft day trade, and they didn't know it was going to be the Broncos: They drafted him knowing he didn't want to play for the Colts. He had already been drafted to play baseball for the Yankees, so he had leverage. The Colts were talking to at least the Pats, Raiders, and Broncos before, during and after the draft, and didn't make a trade until almost a week after the draft.

The Manning/Rivers trade was a true draft day trade that resulted in the 1st overall pick winning the Super Bowl for the team that ended up with him.

Actually what an owner with balls would say to JD and his hand picked staff would be: Look you've fucked up mightily with Zach. Either he was over drafted or you've put him in a terrible place to succeed. Or a combination of the two. Either way, one or all of you fucked up. However, despite this, the team and the roster have over achieved reasonable expectations - despite having the worst QB in the league. So, I'll give you a chance to sort it out. Don't care how you do it, just make sure this team is competitive in 2023.

I don't think this would take balls, just common sense. Either way, apparently in short supply with the Johnsons.

You're not wrong. But with the Johnsons and many others it seems that just doing the common sense thing and admitting that there wasa fuck up is what takes balls it seems to me.
