I'm "ready to move on" from Zach - or more to the point - I'm ready for Zach to move on from the Jets. It's clear the Jets don't know how to develop a QB, and that their fans have no patience for that process. So let him move on and achieve his potential somewhere else, and let the Jets try to find an accomplished vet QB to get them where they want to go.
Believe it or not, the fans have nothing to do with Wilson’s progression. We’re just fans shooting the shit and y’all have made the entire discussion about this kid wildly too personal over the past couple years. Are QB’s born or made? It’s still a question without an answer which is why the whole thing about the Jets consistently screwing these kids up might be unfair. Maybe they were just destined to suck?
I agree that his processing needs to improve but his footwork and body mechanics are the main reason for his struggles IMO.
I assume you mean a low bar for Zach. I never was a fan of Zach, but I'm really into fairness, & on that level, I give the kid credit for whatever he deserves... both ways. I just don't think the Jets have put him into any sort of position to succeed. He can't unless he neuters himself. So, when he shows me he's learned something, on his own, without any coaching, it shows me he's capable of learning... he just needs proper coaching. The thing is, he incorporates what he's learned, into the crap the coaches force on him. And I give him credit for being able to right his head, yesterday, & play a decent 4th-qtr, under the circumstances of being forced to play a system that reinforces his current weaknesses, rather than his natural strengths. If you listen to the media, or so many Jets fans, he threw 4 interceptions in the 4th-qtr, rather than helping the team take the lead, with a few minutes left. Or subsequently, responded to that late Lions TD, by taking them down field, & almost getting them tied... despite Saleh's brain-lock on time-management. What the Jets are doing, is forcing a thoroughbred, to be a trotter. They need to design an offense around him, just like they've acquired the talent to surround him... if they want to give him a chance to succeed. Take that first half yesterday, & keep giving him that to do, & he'll probably improve. Don't do what you did in the 3rd-qtr, & revert to forcing him into bad situations... especially with a dysfunctional OL.
The last thing I want to watch is Zach Wilson lighting up the league on another team, knowing he could do that on the Jets. I know some fans were worried Sam Darnold would do something similar and he has not. Maybe Zach would not either, but I think it is too early to find out. I have seen some truly lost QB's in my life, and Zach is not there. He just needs the right coaching and something to click in his head. It could happen in 2023. It is not a guarantee though, and this roster looks strong, so it would be understandable for Joe Douglas to go out and do what you just said: Sign/Trade for an accomplished QB for 2023. If so, I would still hold on to Zach, let him be QB2, and see if he can figure things out.
You have a better chance of winning the lottery than Zack becoming a Mahomes/ Josh Allen or even a Mike White. This dude has no fundamentals and can only make 1 read and still cant complete a 2 yard pass and has bad footwork. Maybe he will get it in 20 more years but I sure as hell don't want to see him in the starting 20 more years. Him as a starting quarterback diminishes your chances of winning by 60% so why keep starting him right now?
Unfortunately, living out here in CA I didn't get the game so I was "kind of" paying attention to the stat tracker in my Fantasy Football. I looked one minute we were up by 4 and the next time I looked we lost by 3. Very disheartening. Of course, I have my trusty NFL+ Game Pass so I'll be watching the coaches film on that one. I have taken a look at the stats and it looked about as even as the score. Lions had 54% time of possession and small handful of yards more but everything else was in favor of the Jets minus the score. That last TD pass goes away and then the Jets lead in all categories other than TOP. So far, taking away that last play, our defense held a team that laid 34 & 40 points on Minnesota and Jacksonville respectfully. That's not bad. I'm in the Zach must go category. I'll only speculate, for now, but my primary goal in watching that coaches film is to count how many times he misses the 5 - 10 yrd. out that is supposedly a routine NFL play as well as how many wide open receivers he missed. My feeling is Mike White would have been good for at least 27 points but, again, speculating. It's a real crying shame...look at what Lawrence is beginning to do down in Jacksonville. My guess is Wilson, IF he survives in this league, will start to play like that in 4 or 5 years but, more than likely, never.
The key is he was able to turn himself around, after that wacky stretch. In the past, he's just spiraled out-of-control. This time, while not pretty, he rallied the team to the lead, & helped put the team in position to tie, after the D burped. To me, that's progress... to so many others, it never happened. Zach's development depends on the coaches developing, or them bringing in an authentic QB coach.
The bold is just wrong. We should not have won any of them. I do agree that we are closer than we have been in years, though. 1-6 in the red zone against the Vikings and dropping a potential game winning TD pass? you don't deserve to win. 2 turnovers, and a bone headed off sides play in a crucial spot in Buffalo - you're just not good enough at quarterback to overcome mistakes like that. A bad interception leading to 3 points, giving up a special teams touchdown, a 50 yard touchdown on 4th and inches against Detroit - again, not good enough at quarterback to overcome that. The Jets are deficient at the most important position in the game and the rest of the team needs to play almost mistake free because of it to win.
Than he had a chance to win the game and missed Berrios for what might have been a touchdown by 10 feet, you did not see that play huh? Do you really want to keep putting a Qb out there that keeps missing wide open players in stride at the end of the game? Or has mental lapses where he just floats it to the other team?
ZW has to really get his act together to become a viable backup QB at this point. The "gets his act together in 4 or 5 years" scenario depends on him lasting 4 or 5 more years in the NFL and it looks like he is 3 or 4 years short on that right now.
If Saleh and Joe D. had another option, he wouldn't play for the Jets again. But they are stuck with him.
It's very simple... I want to see what Zach can do, with an offense designed to utilize his natural talent. With coaches that have an idea how to develop a QB.
Considering almost no QBs that leave the Jets flourish anywhere else, it’s more on the wrong QB than the Jets of lack of development themselves.
Zach was drafted too high. You guys have him on a pedestal and you never even heard of him before the 2021 draft. Why does he get a shot over multiple years to prove himself? Only because the Jets were silly enough to draft him @ #2. Otherwise no one would even care about this kid. Darnold played nationally televised big time games, at a top program. atleast you feel good he can handle the pressure, true or not. ZW aint bad, and has potential, but I don’t think he’ll ever realize it with the Jets, because the defense is championship caliber right now.
Zach has a worse completion % this year with better players. Im not sure what else the coaches can do. These are issues I’m sure they have worked with him on now for 2 years and nothing is changing.
Maybe. But it's also true that it's easier to develop or train players when they're younger. It's harder to undo bad training - by the time the Jets cut a QB they've already instilled bad habits or not trained their QBs properly so that success is nearly impossible after that. And it's also true that the Jets are terrible at identifying QB talent. The irony here is that this time they did identify a talented QB, but they had no plan or ability to develop him properly.
I know we all want gratifications at this point: it's the second year since he was drafted and he is still struggling, but perhaps Zach just needs more time. Fields and Lawrence turned it around about midway portion of the second year. Zach is clearly not there yet, but it could have something to do with the fact he never played against top notch P5 competition week in and week out like Jones, Lawrence, and Fields did. The gap in competition in NFL vs BYU is huge, way more than top level programs of the aforementioned guys. He was thrown into the fire from the get go without anyone good to throw the ball to. This year he does have weapons, but also porous OLine. In BYU he was protected a lot, so it is a huge adjustment, and he did develop bad habits, which he needs to unlearn. My only point is that it may not be coaching or anything really, but him needing more time. It could also be that much like Sam, he will never quite put it together. It's certainly not encouraging what we are seeing now, but I would not give up on him just yet. This year he can stay as White's back up and learn (if Mike is even able to get back against Seattle and Miami) and give him a chance to compete against Mike next year - like he did his third year in BYU.
