http://www.nj.com/jets/ledger/index.ssf?/base/sports-0/1168234791255060.xml&coll=1 How awesome would that be to pick up Asante Samuel. The thing I hate about drafting cornerbacks is that they take so long to come around....few are impact players. It would be awesome to get him and Michael Turner and concentrate on drafting some defensive line and linebacker help in the draft.
If Baltimore does not resign him, the Jets should pursue Baltimore fullback Ovie Mughelli. (I've been writing as much so often lately, that I should probably mention the guy in my sig.) We can all watch him on Saturday afternoon. He's much better than Askew, Tutt, and Hodgins.
I don't think Asante samuel is worth a big contract and I would be livid if we gave up most of our cap room on FAs after this season. We have finally gotten out of cap hell and we need to keep cap room for flexibility and I'll be shocked if tannenbaum goes out on a spending spree. Not only would turner get a big deal but we'll also have to give up most likely a 2nd rd pick to get him and let's not forget about Lamont Jordan- great backup behind future HOFer yet he turned into a medicore starter.
I wouldn't mind using a 3rd round pick on Brian Leonard. I'm not a big fan of Askew or Hodgins. Is there any way they could move Sean Ryan to FB? I'm not sure how good of a blocker he is but it's something to consider. 2 of the biggest needs for the Jets are cornerback and running back (although I like Washington). I think they have to go and do whatever they can to sign Samuel....cornerbacks like him are impossible to come by.
I have ZERO interest in Michael Turner. Everyone here seems to want him but he's Lamont Jordan JR in my books. I don't think CB is a big need, but Samuel is a good player, just don't break the bank for him.
you can thank Oaklands joke of an OL for Jordans failure as a starter. Id take turner for a 2nd rder anyday, hes groomed behind LT is big and fast. People are just hoping we draft a rb 1st rd this yr. why do it when we can get someone with some seasoning and fresh legs in Turner? i believe more focus needs to go on the OL cuz our run blocking is avg at best. but if we could get turner for a 2nd rd I'd do it. now id want samuel but your right to lure him away from the pats would take an insane contract when we could just draft someone else. but then again i dont feel like waiting 3 yrs for a CB to develop. alot of cap room though. id at least want turner.
Don't forget we have Jason Pociask but he was hurt this year. Prior to his injury the CS was high on him as a possible FB.
I would hate to wait around for a cornerback. I don't know how much it will take to lure someone away from the Pats. Remember, they never pay to keep their free agents so it might not be THAT much. It's definetly something to consider. That would be an excellent tandem with Dyson on the other side and Rhodes and Colemen behind them. We have 28 million in cap room....there is no way we give each guy a 14 million dollar a year contract so we won't be wasting it all on 2 guys. We have more then enough room to spare with all that money.
cuz fargas is a scatback who can sprint through the non existant holes and get taken down first contact meanwhile lamont fights through. so I guess cause you can bring up a player in a similar scenario over 50 yrs into the sport that means it wouldnt work?
Just so you guys know. Samuel is a hit or miss type of guy. Not very consistant at all. He plays better as a nickleback.
I don't know about you guys, but I'd love to have a few big names on our team. I wouldn't mind the attention we'd get either since we've been flying under the radar for so many years.
Hopefully the Jets will have even more wiggle room in subsequent years when they can get out from under terrible contracts like D-Rob and Ellis have.
i think Turner is Priest Holmes revisited...(back up for Jamal Lewis) if we can get a solid RB, behind an improving O-Line... a CB we will be solid and could look at taking the AFC East
If we can get Turner for a 2nd, it is the no brainer of all no brainers. You have to do it, question is can we get him for a second rounder? As far as Samuel goes, I'd love to have him(who wouldn't want a 25 year old pro bowl caliber CB?) but he will be severely overpaid & doubt the Jets will be the team to overpay him. Those two would absolutely be my main targets in the offseason , freeing the draft for more talent on both lines & a pass rusher.
What about Portis??? I heard some guys on here saying Portis for a 2nd. I would rather that than Turner.
Dream Off-season Defense CB Asante Samuel sign him to a 5-6 year deal DE Alan Branch 1st round pick OLB LaMarr Woodley 2nd round pick Offense WR Randy Moss for a 3rd RB Clinton Portis for our 2nd rounder and a 3rd/4th next year
I would rather Turner then Portis because Turner has less mileage and I think he can be a fantastic compliment to Washington. For a second rounder I would do it, if he is available for that price. I would also pursue Samuel. He is a FANTASTIC player; luring him away from our competitor and adding another impact player to our secondary could only help our cause. If we're going to stick with Chad P we're going to need become more dominant in terms of other aspects of our team. Adding him to our defense would be wonderful, and our young/talented secondary would be hard to beat for years. Impact players will always cost more b/c they come at a premium. How many times do you have a chance to get a guy his age playing his position? We need to take a hard shot at him this off-season.
